Must be one of those things where Asian literature is required to never have a truly satisfying climax and conclusion. They all worship on the altar of "journey to the west" , whose greatest hallmarks is that the MC and his band companions have lots of zany adventures but never actually reach their destination and the story just drops off with them continuing into the sunset.

1. They do actually reach the destination and successfully return back, as per your own link.
2. It was vice versa IRL, anime and mango had and still has seasonal arks and complete stories, western media had endless status quo until the show dropped in popularity and fizzed away without an ending.
