YouTube's apparently rolling out a new layout on desktop and jesus christ what is this shit??

I haven't gotten this new layout yet, but the second this affects everyone you know someone's gonna put together an extension or greasemonkey script to revert it back to the old design.
Why the fuck are web designers so bad at designing anything, where did we go so fucking wrong? :lossmanjack:

Yeah it's disgusting. Move to using invidious, there's no saving the more highly used websites anymore, their front end development teams are too filled with retards foaming at the mouth forgetting desktop users exist because mobile traffic has become so much higher in recent years.

Well can't you just have two versions, the boomer desktop version, and the phone version?
well you can, reddit does that with their old.reddit.com version
but then you have to maintain two live versions instead of one, and any future changes or new features will have to be made for both of them separately. lots of extra work.

Not a web designer but a graphic designer, sometimes we make a good layout but the higher ups make you change everything to what they think is right, no matter how you teach them about design principles and shit.
I don't know if it's the case here, but it's something that happens a lot. Many jobs I finished I didn't add to my portfolio because my bosses were assholes who didn't listen to me.

In this case, in my very small experience with web design, it's seems that they optimized the layout for mobile and tablet views and left desktop behind. Most households, at least in my country, access the internet through a mobile device instead of a desktop, so there's a shift of focus here. Not the best thing, but meh. It hasn't changed for me so I can't give my honest opinion, but I mostly browse Youtube on desktop so I can give my 2 cents later when I get the update.

Yeah it's work but they're owned by ALPHABET. I think YouTube can afford it.

Someone designs something. Has to go through chain of command before its implemented. Each person in the chain of command sticks their dick in it. End result is very different to how it was designed.

Or the designers are justifying their job by redesigning shit constantly. If they settle on a perfect design then the boss will just keep a few of them to maintain it and fire the rest. So they have to keep breaking and fixing things to look busy

I don't mind this change at all, if I click on a video it's either in Cinema mode or picture-in-picture any way.
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.EXPERIMENT_FLAGS.kevlar_watch_grid, false)

Add to uBlock filtres and it will go back to normal.
Just use FreeTube. It's an open-source desktop version of YouTube which uses local user profiles instead of a Google account and has sponsor/adblocking built in. Someone on the Farms introduced me to it several months ago and I've never looked back. The YouTube site has gotten so much worse since then. I would honestly call it downright unusable if you're on Firefox and use an adblocker.

My favourite part is the recommendation system; stock YouTube recommends content on the sidebar of a video based primarily on the interests Google's demonic algorithm has determined you to have through your watch history/other gay metrics. Meanwhile, FreeTube recommends you content solely based on the content/tags of the video you're currently watching. Switch to a different video and the recommendations follow suit. This is such a basic fucking feature you'd think this is how YouTube has worked for a decade, but you'd be wrong. I often find my recommendations on FreeTube are far more relevant, interesting and authentic than Google's pozzed bullshit.

One word my friend... Indians.

Because it doesn't matter how skilled you are, how many programming languages you know, or how many certs you have, because Rakesh just came over from Mumbai with a totally legitimate PHD in computer science from Durka-Durka Technical University, and is willing to work for €5 an hour writing barely legible JavaScript for 14 hours a day.

the modern web is designed primarily for tablets and phones, and for the lowest common denominator users (third world teenagers)
If that's what they're targeting, they're not even doing a good job of that. Every fucking year, mobile UI elements get smaller and thinner and more cluttered and it gets harder to do basic stuff like seek through a video without accidentally clicking the mute or fullscreen buttons or whatever.

Everything web-related peaked in 2010-2014 and has been getting steadily worse ever since.
