the modern web is designed primarily for tablets and phones, and for the lowest common denominator users (third world teenagers)
I've heard the largest number of Youtube users are in India. Most of them use phones. But nothing beats having a big screen and a keyboard/mouse to work with. In this case they want you to be so distracted by the feed at the bottom that you hop from video to video being served mucho ads in the process. My feedback to Youtube (that they don't give a fuck about anyway) is that it's too distracting and I can't engage properly with the video. I also added that because my eyesight is bad I had trouble reading the comments.
But I think they don't want us to read and write comments. Every second doing that is another second you aren't seeing more ads. I would not be surprised if they axe comments all together in the future or make them part of a premium experience that you have to pay to use both on the creator and viewer end.
