Why are Zoomers addicted to "lore"?

This shit has been around for a while hasn't it? Like all the bullshit about DMT and machine elves and alien gods.
I don't think it's limited to zoomers at all, they're just more likely to do drugs (including prescription shit like benadryl) and make youtube videos about it, but they didn't create the "lore".

Have to replace the Western Canon with something, and it's this or Disney properties.

Now that you mention Western Canon, in fewer places does the utter hate woke has for white people and western civilization manifest than self-proclaimed scholars referring to the greatest pieces of art in all of history as "dead white men stuff"

I think its only natural that people are curious about the finer details about the world of a story they're invested in. People used to make all kinds of theory videos or articles about different media even way before people like MatPat popularized it.
It's just that this attention mostly goes to dumb shit like the Backrooms nowadays.

I like ww2 era lore where countless war crimes were commited. Everybody just focuses on the holocaust and Hitler, but nobody talks about the cannibalism or the shit where people just got stationed in foreign jungles and forests and never got contacted when the war was over, so they just camped out there for fucking ever thinking they were gonna get bombed any second.

They don't like lore they like explanations in a 5 hour youtube essay. My guess is because its a way that farpers (fandom larpers) can look like they are apart of the group.
Yeah this is basically what I've noticed. No actual appreciation for material or actual lore from most of these types, 5 hour long wikpedia entry readings with fluff about "representation" and "the community" eating up the runtime are wayyyyyyyy too fucking common.

People have always been invested in stories. But zoomers don't have the attention span or brain power to read and analyze a fucking book. So in comes "lore" like Youtube essays and fandom headcanons, which is just being spoon fed a string of facts and characteristics with no critical analysis needed.

I fucking love when zoomers or youtube video essayists say I have no "media literacy" because I can't see how totally secretly gay or racist the very clearly non-gay and non-racist characters in pop culture media are!

For fucking real whenever I see shit like someone trying to frame shit like a reference to Gary Coleman in stuff that came out back when he was alive as "racist" it completely baffles me. Gary coleman is an extremely well known child actor with an afro due to the fact he infamously played a child well into adulthood, it would be extremely easy to find info on him with a quick search of any kind. Yet somehow, these kinds of people that do this are not only unwilling to even look into Gary Coleman, but also deny the reference when the info is literally shoved in their faces because it's not enough of a "source".
It's not just zoomers who do this shit either the whole behavior here seems to be a specific kind of politics "fact checking" brainrot.

I'm convinced that most of these 12-hour video essays about [old video game] or "iceberg" videos full of the secret depths of [contemporary consumer product] are just used as background noise by people who seemingly can't listen to music or ambient sounds while sleeping, preferring people narrating a poorly written creepypasta article.

It's especially egregious when you have these "analyses" where the person making them doesn't even seem to know what the basics of the object of focus are, so they just wind up going "Yeah, I don't know what this part means, if you know, leave a comment down below. AND DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE AND SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON AND RING THAT BELL AND—"

I unironically believe this started with Game of Thrones.

But for more than a decade entertainment has been dominated by Marvel, Marvel adjacent and Marvel wanna be, where lore replaces storytelling and snark replaces emotions. Everything is a pointless post-modern deconstruction, but who can admit the pop culture of their "childhoods" is complete trash?

Look at those Gen Xers still clinging to the shit they liked as kids in the 80s as examples of supreme entertainment.
