I actually don't hate her, she once replied in a kind manner to a message I sent her a few years ago. I actually think she is not bad looking. But she is trying to be Chris's friend no matter how awkward and selfish it may seem, that is pretty cool in my book.
i'm going to prefix it that it isn't Anna's
job to fix Chris. But if she's considered a friend and the closest to Chris that isn't directly related to him, then she
does have a responsibility to not make things any worse for him. Anything else is cruel, or not something a friend should do at the very least.
Let's just pretend there's two kinds of friends: those that encourage one to change, and those that don't want to see one get hurt. A lot of CWCkians are the former. Though not all of us may like Chris, forgive his past actions, or even believe he is capable of change, there some are more active than others in trying to turn his life around. Deep down we all would be ecstatic to see him actually strive to make changes in his life, I think. It's human nature to want to believe in the underdog no matter how insurmountable the odds seem. Anna and her Band of Merry Asspatters are the latter kind of friend. They value a happy, calm mind above all else. One the surface, it sounds quite admirable. This wouldn't be bad in the short term; after all, stress over long periods of time will wear anyone down. The thing is, Chris has been exposed to asspats all his life. He's never
really experienced "stress." The closest thing might be the fight-or-flight moments during his encounters with the law (or running over that god damn Snyder). What Chris is really experiencing is probably some form of depression. He's clearly been unhappy for a while and something must be done. From first-hand experience, I can tell you that just trying to keep someone happy does not motivate someone to change and tends to only prolong things, doubly so for someone that is depressed. Chris lacks the capability to have a moment of introspection and realize what's causing everything to go poorly for him: his current self. These asspats do nothing but confound the truth and cause him to believe that everything is working against him, and that the Hurtful Truth Level has no right to overwrite his good, albeit somewhat false, memories.
tl;dr Chris is just sitting in the leaking raft that is his life. Anna's asspats are just patching the leak before the next hole shows up. Few of us here want to see his raft gouged out from under him but eventually he'll either have to sink or swim.
