why does college cost so much in the US?

Some US colleges and universities are comparable to universities abroad when it comes to STEM, but college education in general has been overemphasized by employers, leading to increased demand without increasing supply, thus raising tuition prices to comparatively insane amounts.
For instance, almost any white collar entry level job or even in some cases internship will require at least a related 2 year degree. That's part of why you see so many college kids in the US working service jobs while they hold useless degrees.
laughs in high-school dropout

There's no reason for them to not cost a fortune. The money is backed by taxpayers so fuck it, raise the shit out of the tuition, they aren't on the hook if the student drops out, they already got paid. If a law was passed requiring the college to be on the hook for any defaulted college loans the cost would drop so fast a vacuum would form.

Trades are fairly safe career choices thanks to unions and required education (that doesn't induce massive debt.) What that study refers to is the more common kind of blue collar work. Think of the difference between Fred Flintstone and Surly Joe's Foundation Repair; both are blue collar, but only one can be easily-replaced by an immigrant or a machine.
I went to trade school, it was twice as expensive as my previous degree was. Also I couldn't get into the job I wanted because union rules stated I had to be a garbage collector for two years first (which I was willing to do, but I didn't have a CDL which would have been another 5-6k to get. No, the trade program didn't include CDL training, that'd be silly).

I did find a union job that didn't have such crazy rules, but I would recommend being smarter than I was and do your research first. Trade schools are just as susceptible to the faggotry colleges are.

Why do Americans look down so much on manual labor?
An illegal is not gonna replace an experienced plumber or welder.
We don't. Just silicone valley does.

Because a company hiring them for peanuts when they do a 'good enough' job is cheaper than hiring a professional who'll ask for higher wages because he has the experience to make himself worth more.

So whenever government increases gibs to students universities increase cost
Whenever government increases gibs to universities they increase costs.
Universities also set up programs to sell universities as resort living experiences so students will take out maximum government gibs
They market heavily to foreigners who pay 10X the price gouging american students are charged

Europe has rationed education. Saying that they're more efficient just ridiculous.
Merit based Education. I rather have qualified people study on taxpayer costs than idiots studying on debt they will never be able to repay.
that also doesnt change the fact that the US spends a higher percentage on administration, spending that hurts the students.

Because we let it happen. We let dogs off the leash that should never have been let loose. A market was perceived for junk degrees and higher ed was already hyped to hell and back. The proliferation of expensive postsecondary was a market response to an idiotic populace and lax regulations.

I'm not sure if they exist elsewhere, but the US has a number of for-profit colleges where students are seen as little more than dollar signs and the educational value is questionable at best -- especially if the particular for-profit is unaccredited. This is a big deal if one wishes to transfer to an accredited college/university because credits from unaccredited institutions usually don't transfer. Although several for-profits have closed or merged in the past 5-10 years, there's still plenty of them around.

When for-profits acquire not for=profit schools, they tend to cut programs and support services in an attempt to make their newly-acquired schools profitable. Several years back, there was a college in New England that was taken over by a for-profit group and student services and athletics were some of the first things to be cut. Without the student-athletes however, enrollment plummeted and the school eventually closed.

Give it time. Remember. 'Australian-style immigration system' means an Indian plumber whose father's house back home doesn't have plumbing can take your job.

because it's easier to scam idiots with promises of a future regardless if their major is underwater basket weaving than it is to scam as a prince of Nigeria.
i'm outta the job, thanks america

  1. Greed. Schools are greedy, plain and simple.
  2. Perverse incentives like state-lottery scholarships that do nothing to lower the price of college, but encourage schools to increase tuition because they now have a guaranteed revenue stream.
  3. Schools - especially larger ones - have become effective resorts with student facilities rivaling Sandals - food courts w/ big name franchises, rec centers, hotel-quality dorms, etc. - and they've become so expensive to maintain, giving the schools further incentive to raise tuition.
  4. Too many people go to college. There's no incentive for schools to lower tuition costs because they have a guaranteed clientele.

The USA doesn't have the same respect for craftsmen and artisans that Europe does due its history of quickly developing manufacturing and slavery. A blue collar worker is just seen as a cog in he machine.

Americans are obsessed with efficiency and it is cheaper and more efficient to use slave labor in other countries instead of properly pay professionals a living wage they deserve

American culture is all about standing in front and doing the spectacular. You can't do that as a craftsmen or laborer

America has the best military in the world. Do you want to stand in front and do the spectacular in a physical way? Do you want a stable job with good benefits? Just join the army... it doesn't last that long usually but that is where these types of people go.

The military can be a terrible gig depending on where you want to go with it, but I am all for aimless human driftwood getting their shit sorted short-order by a DI or whatever.

Higher education is becoming unnecessary. All the skills and knowledge you get in the work process. I talk a lot about the usefulness of modern higher education. If you need argumentative essay topics, then you should read more information about educational trends. This will help you make the right college decision.

I don’t have a college degree and also no job. I’m not going to work at a job with a useless degree because I’m not going to work in the first place. This will probably be a problem when I get older tho.

Tuition doesn't cost anything for resident students of certain states to attend state/community colleges as long as they maintain halfway decent grades in high school. It's a pretty good system.

College is expensive for many reasons, including a surge in demand, an increase in financial aid, a lack of state funding, a need for more faculty members and money to pay them, and ballooning student services. The cost of college has made a degree less advantageous than it was 10 years ago, one dissertation discussion writer said
