Why is DeviantArt unironically better than most modern "art"?

Whenever I look at a piece of what is currently referred to as "modern art", it amazes me how such trash is allowed to even leave the room it was made in without the artist falling into complete embarrassment. Even the kind of dross you would find on free internet art communities like DeviantArt or Pixiv is unironically superior to the kind of rank garbage you see being bought for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Why, when, and how did it become passé for the modern artist to actually draw or paint something that is aesthetically appealing, that follows certain rules of form and function?

Also the art world these days mostly cares if you got an art degree and are apart of their circle jerk.
Deviant Art allows anyone, quality or not. The community decides whats quality, not the art snobs (and I guess fetishists too but thats another story).

Modern Art is a combination of idiots who look at garbage and ascribe meaning so they can pretend to be sophisticated, and shitposters (sometimes literal ones) looking to test the idiots' limits. But the idiots don't have limits, so you just get worse and worse art as time goes.

And it's been that way for decades.

Deviantart, meanwhile, has people who just make things that make themselves happy, then upload it in the hopes it makes others happy. That's what art's really all about.

Modern art is more about the artist than the actual creation itself.

You can have supreme technical skill and gain some minor attention, but if you've got some quirky backstory like Grayson Perry (I know I'm an old man but inside I'm a tortured pre pubescent girl) that's what people are buying into.

You don't necessarily buy a branded handbag for the quality, you buy it for the branding.

I personally don't dislike modern art (that much), but i do agree that it,
1. Requires less skill to create than what what you find on deviantart.
2. Isn't worth the price tags put on it.

I'm also pretty sure I've heard that modern art is a medium for tax evasion. You can transfer large sums tax free by "gifting" someone a piece of art. Don't quote me on that tho.

There's a pretty good conversation about this topic in Art & Literature.
Personally I think it's because the point of art in the past was superiority - The rich people could have the nicest looking things while the peasants had the shitty art and sculptures that remained.
However, with the advancement in technology, everyone can have a beautiful painting and sculptures for a pretty affordable price, so the rich instead have to "create" a new kind of art that makes them feel superior. ie the ugly disgusting art that you have to be smert to understand.

Because modern art is typically just a money laundering scheme. Nobody wants to determine the quality of art based on objective, traditionalist measures; the purely subjective ability to say "well I think this piece is worth 5 million dollars" is what allows modern art to reliably to facilitate criminal activity.

Deviantart rarely (probably never) makes anyone a dime, so it's allowed to consist of sincere passion projects by individuals. Even misguided ones.

Back in the early 2000's, DeviantArt was my go to place for desktop backgrounds in E. Flux/Openbox et al. Then something horrifying happened... furries and diaper fetishists found it and assumed the name was literal.
