The people who lost the bet on the election would have their accounts deleted. Of course Obama beat McCain so the more right leaning Goons that bet had their accounts deleted, and would leave the more left leaning Goons on the site. It's probably not what caused SA to be what it is today, but it certainly was a step in that direction.
