A lot to be honest. Some degrees of selfishness are good for survival. There’s entire schools of thought promoting ethical egoism (ie helping or keeping other around you served in your own best interests.) Lots of parents in fact have kids for selfish reasons, without any care for the children themselves. So it’s an anomaly with rearing children.

Up until pretty recently, most kids were accidents, maybe the logical next step for people once they started making the decision for themselves was convincing themselves it was for an overall societal good. That seems like unnecessary rationalizing to me, though. By all means, have kids, I don't know if it can be argued that you're doing a service to society by doing so.

I would be a terrible role model. Plus you're not even allowed to hit them anymore when they're not acting right.
 
If you can't financially support a child, you should probably wait until then. If I get a kid I'm at least going to try to never have them worry about food, housing, necessities, etc.
