Why & when did spellcheck become fucking retarded?

I'm certain it has always been this way. I remember when they first rolled out spellcheck in browsers and everyone was like "oh that's neat" but it wasn't long before everyone was always complaining about it missing words or something. I've always disabled it. If you know how to spell, be confident in it.
I was more talking about like Microsoft Word 1997. I am pretty sure if I was fucked enough to run a copy of it now it would include "inarguably". Also as someone who has used the internet for a very long time, it has noticeably reduced in quality over time.

With actual software used in businesses and shit, that is where I'd say it may have gotten worse. I've been on the Internet long as well and I don't believe spellcheck with web-browsers has changed, but shit like Microsoft Office has been thrown into web browsers and shoved to people now that I'm sure they just rely on the web browser to do the work now anyway. I'm sure MS97 would have "inarguably" too but now my curiosity is piqued and I must check.

Update: Microsoft Word 97 does have "inarguably" as well as "unarguably".

Unfortunately, they forgot to add "nigger" to the dictionary back then.

Yeah I would've guessed as much. So we're basically dumber than we were in 1997 using Microsoft fucking Word. Makes sense. The world is literally... sorry, inarguably becoming stupider.

Part of the problem is that we have retards curating spellcheck databases who don’t think that there should be alternative spellings for anything, that every word should have the “one true spelling” and that’s it.

Take toward/towards (and also forward/forwards and backward/backwards) for example. Chicago Manual of Style says both are acceptable, but AP says omit the “S”. Spellcheckers say, basically, the former is correct for American English and the latter is more often used in commonwealth countries. But the funny thing about this is that it’s not 100% correct. There is significant overlap in the usage. There are lots of Americans who write “backwards” instead of “backward”, and sometimes even mix both in the same document. But the guys who work on spellcheckers are OCD autists (go figure) who think you should just use one or the other for consistency. Inarguably/unarguably is a perfect example of this sort of fuckery.

I noticed my iPhone doesn’t redline “nigger” or “cracker” but it does redline “pajeet”, “troon” and “cuck”. Really makes you think.

A lot of thing have weirdly degraded in quality. Google search is one that makes sense - ok, they want to control the flow of information. But why is it that my iPhone spellchecker now can’t tell when I’ve deleted a word and replaced it? It thinks that somehow I am trying to write replacefreplaced, even though the first 8 characters have already been deleted? It didn’t used to do that. I guess it’s just the structure of our economy and the ever-growing complexity of software products.

It's not primarily that, its that the whole SEO system is connected by the hip to their advertising income (which is their main source of revenue). They fucked it up out of total mismanagement. Nowadays when I google stuff that is specific there are so many less results (and I don't google political shit generally speaking)

I've noticed the one built into anysoft keyboard seems to really like capitalizing basic words as names. Shit like Cook, Bacon will always get autocorrected to have a capital. It also does this
I've noticed a lot of words, but especially words that are slightly politically incorrect just do not exist in spell check dictionaries anymore. We're not talking about racist or nazi shit either, but words normal people would use that could be taken the wrong way depending on context.
With its dictionary. I've had to manually add in quite a few words that really should have already been in there.

TFW the autocorrect Ai spellcheck of search engines corrects "hiss" to "kiss" for the 55th time when I'm trying to figure out how to fix something making a specific hissing noise and what it might be causing it.
