More and more I find myself typing out shit and then getting those annoying red lines and more and more spellchecks across the board (mobile + on desktops) seem to not have any record of well known words that are actually in the dictionary.

Case in point: I just wrote out a message that contained "inarguably" - according to spellcheck this isn't a word anymore and only "unarguably" is. But it fucking is a word.

What dipshit isn't able to do a simple import of words that have been in use for centuries? Why are they deliberately removing certain words? Are people just stupider nowadays? Why does everything keep getting shitter?

I feel your pain, OP. I've also noticed spellcheckers redlining and autocorrecting words that are already correct.

The most irritating one for me is when autocorrects decide to replace possessive "its" with "it's", the contraction of "it is". It's like, no, fucker. I meant its. Autocorrects should not automatically assume that the user meant to write a contraction and do shit like correct "were" to "we're" or fucked up shit like that.

This isn't even rare vocabulary shit. This is basic-ass first-grader English, and it fucks it up.

I've noticed a lot of words, but especially words that are slightly politically incorrect just do not exist in spell check dictionaries anymore. We're not talking about racist or nazi shit either, but words normal people would use that could be taken the wrong way depending on context.

The iphone is especially bad about this.

Forget spellcheck, at least that's merely a suggestion. It's autocorrect that's the true devil, especially on phones. So frustrating to type something accurately and have it correct-raped into something that makes no sense. Creates twice the work.

Sometimes I won't even notice then I'll look back and see something that makes nonsense at all.

Its corpus has also noticeably decreased, too. Antique or obscure proper names like Europydes or thermoregulation are conspicuously absent (I very vividly recall these two words specifically being in the dictionaries of older versions of Android's autocorrect). It's as if autocorrect is no longer designed by native speakers with a large vocabulary...

And it's not just us over on Kiwifarms noticing this. Sam Hyde has talked about it on his podcast. I believe this is related to the gradual and total enshittification of complex frameworks and infrastructures of our society, similar to the collapse of Google search that has occurred since the inauguration of the Obama administration.

Mine (Microsoft SwiftKey on an iPhone), which claims to be "smart" and that it learns your imprecision, has gotten worse and worse. Even when I tell it not to predict/ use [some non-word] again and again. It also now inserts caps and whole words if I mis-type certain things, replaces words that start with "in" with "I [space]," even when I did not miss the n, misses obvious nonsense, replaces physical with ohtsucal 99% the time, and makes garbage recommendations (I mentioned somewhere yesterday that when I mis-typed strategic as stretgic, saw the error a line later, went back to highlight to get the corrected suggestion without retyping, it suggested only "stretti." Bc sure, that's much more likely than strategic.).

Also, stop putting periods outside quotes when I already put the period inside them. Two spaces creates an automatic period, great. But I already had one, and you should recognize that. God.

OP should brush up on his runelore (though maybe you use work software or devices where you can't turn off spellcheck)

As an anecdote, I'm not a native English speaker, and I've heard "inarguably" far more times than "unarguably", so if the spellchecker was going for "more popular", it would be doing the opposite based on my experience.

In essence, if you know how to write (more or less), spellcheckers will probably end up being a disservice more than helpful, unless you're writing casual or low-quality comments on let's say Twitter (but by that point, you should just log off instead).

I've recently been doing something and one of the tasks for me was to do handwriting and its bad enough that I almost never handwrite to begin with, but as part of this thing I have to do it with my non-dominant hand. I haven't done it yet but I know the results will be turbo terrible.

Actually I meant "learn spelling and grammar so you don't need spellcheck" but handwriting counts too - which is especially good for notes. My handwriting skills went up after I started using pen and paper for some thoughts.

I already have a really good command of spelling in the first place. I use spellcheck as an afterthought to make sure there's no glaring errors. That's why its annoying to get the red underline shit and it isn't even valid - I'm being told I'm wrong but I am correct.

I'm certain it has always been this way. I remember when they first rolled out spellcheck in browsers and everyone was like "oh that's neat" but it wasn't long before everyone was always complaining about it missing words or something. I've always disabled it. If you know how to spell, be confident in it.
