You've outlined all the evil ways it could potentially be used. Hell, is going to be used. And the fundamental ethical flaw with... taking snapshots of your data. Who would come up with something like this, and why? How would they overlook something that's this extremely basic, so basic that even a boomer could tell you it's a bad idea AND precedent that's going to lead to a lot of privacy concerns?

I think the answer is clear - in this case it isn't stupidity, it really is malice. Linux users running Steam or logging into Facebook doesnt seem like a contradiction to me. You can use it however you want. Google Chrome, Discord, Steam, etc. Nothing about Linux mandates that it must be some super secret secure autistic anti establishment OS.

The reaction you're describing is usually in response to Windows users asserting that using any non-free software on linux completely nullifies the benefits, which is obviously absurd.

Just use Linux Mint. It's dead easy to install and use. Unless you are installing Arch,Slackware or Gentoo (which I don't recommend unless you have a specific usecase), Linux is dead easy to use and install. Plus, commandline cheat sheets are easy to find online should you need to use it as well as simple tutorials for package managers (depending on your distro).
