Either troll's remorse, or a realization that content will run dry if you take his ability to stream games away. I'm doubtful Richard sought out legal counsel on this, but there is also the chance the trolls involved wanted out before legal action actually did come their way. Uh oh, well if Richard is indeed being honest about the situation and this is what's happening, the guy who changed his psn username would have used up the opportunity to change your psn username once for free, any other time you want to change your psn username you have to pay Sony a small fee each time you want your username changed (unless they've recently updated the way how it works, I'm pretty sure I'm correct on this but do correct me if I'm not).
