Necro because I want to keep discussing the hidden skills and I think this thread just has a bad title.
When I first went to school, the schoolwork wasn't the important part. It was responsibility in every other field. You needed to remember to bring your things.
Did you forget your lunch? You can't count on Mom to notice, and do you really want her there if she does? School was about learning to get along with others and having a community.
Elementary school: You forget your lunch. Your teacher notices, gives you a lunch and sends your mom a bill. Mom's pissed because they charged ten dollars for bottom-tier food.
Middle school: You don't want Mom to show up even if she notices you forgot your lunch. Your friends give you some of their food and you drink from the water fountain.
School is really about learning to manage increasing responsibility in a community, imo.
