I guess I wasn't expecting the artist behind this piece to be a fellow Kiwi. Small world, this lolcow business is, isn't it?
Thanks for explaining it. Without knowing any of the thought processes that went into it, the only conclusion I could've drawn is that the author was unfamiliar with the exact characters used, but looked up a table of Katakana and made a minor error based on the fact that both ゴ and ヨ are characters with a 3/4's square shape with the opening on the left side. It's fascinating to learn that not only was it intentional, but the author knew exactly what they were doing.
Though if you don't mind, may I ask a couple questions?
- What motivated you to do artwork for Phil? Former fan that had a falling out with him over his behavior?
- I feel like I already know the answer to this, but were you ever compensated for it, or was it pro-bono?
No judgement regardless of your answers, I'm just legitimately curious as to what went through the heads of the many people that made fanart for his pre-stream slideshows. My DMs are open if you feel like the answers might get dangerously close to PL.
Oh, and by the way, nice artwork. Even if it's meant to glorify a below-zero IQ douchebag, you did really nice work making Phil look like he could've been an extra in Stardust Crusaders.
There are a
bunch of reasons for me doing this, which I prefer to not go into, but I can give you a couple of them.
For one, some fans liked it, and it's always nice to do something people can appreciate. Given that DSP had this prestream where fan-art was displayed and people would sometimes look at, it seemed like a good way to present stuff that they could maybe enjoy.
Another reason was to improve my artwork and drive, even in a toxic environment, and I'm talking about the detractorsphere. I don't know if you realize how vile some of these folks are out there, where the only thing they can do is try to shit on everything and insult it, so this was a good way to test myself in regards to perseverance.
No matter how hard you try and how proud you are of something you did, some people will always mock it due to their own insecurities and apathy, but if you don't let it get to you & even use that as a motivation, regardless of what they say & with confidence in what you like and do, you can raise to new heights. Sounds familiar right? It's the core idea of the "King of Hate" that DSP
horribly unsuccessfully tried to achieve.
I could use this to motivate myself despite & regardless of all the toxicity, and I believe I did since I am very content with the stuff I made, specially the latter slides that I let DSP use. This is what
I think his idea of the "King of Hate" was supposed to be, which I myself had before I even knew who DSP was, but of course without that moniker & other tangential meanings he may have given it.
Those are a couple of reasons, there are more, so it was like several birds with one stone. I was not paid, I didn't need to get paid, but I also never asked to. We already know he would not pay someone for artwork anyways, but that wasn't a concern of mine as explained.
Once I spoke to him one last time in regards to WWEChampions, and after I gave him an opportunity and suggestion to speak the truth about it, I concluded that he was irredeemable & a traitor to his own audience, not me, but to all the
actual fans who believed his words and donated to him, so I asked him to take my slides off his content.
