Press F for Messi. I feel bad for him, he's the only reason Argentina even made it to Russia, but he can't do everything on the team. That said, great game from Croatia and glad they made it to the R16. I very much doubt Argentina can pull themselves together for Nigeria and even then a win might not be enough.

Tomorrow's games:
Brazil-Costa Rica
Nigeria-Iceland
Serbia-Switzerland

If Neymar is healthy (I hear he got an injury during training) and he isn't being fouled non-stop, Brazil can have a good chance. Costa Rica only really has Navas as their main man to rely on. Nigera-Iceland is ofc crucial as it brings us one step closer to potentially eliminating Argentina. Hope Iceland manages to win. Serbia-Switzerland is a close match, but I feel Serbia is more solid.

What exactly just happened with Argentina- Croatia? The first match I miss is a massive surprise win for the underdog.

It all began when their goalie cocked up a save and allowed the Croatians to score on the rebound. Combine that with a complete lack of teamwork in midfield and sloppy defending and Lionel Messi just spends most of his time up the top end of the field isolated.

Well the Argies aren't really known for their good teamwork, but I thought it would be good enough at least to score on a middle ranked team.

I wonder if this will finally convince Messi to leave the National Team for good. He did it before, briefly in 2016, and he could still squeeze one more WC performance out (he'll be 35 in 2022) though that will completely be up to whether or not he'll still be at the same level in four years. Even if by some miracle Argentina manages to get out of the group, Messi still has to wonder if all that trouble and stress was worth it.

If can't win the WC at 31 with this trash team, what makes people believe he can do at 35?

The power of rose tinted glasses and massive delusion. We ENGERLUND supporters are used to it, thinking that we had a good team in years past because we had loads of highly paid Premiership players on board when in reality we had a cavalcade of scornful egotists who had no idea how to play with each other.

Agreed. Same thing will eventually happen in this WC as well.

I'd hardly call it a massive surprise. Nothing like Mexico Beating Germany for example.

Argentina struggled to qualify in the first place, while Croatia has looked pretty good leading up to this cup. And last game Argentina had problems with tiny Iceland (who admittedly are a deceptivly hard team to beat, especially if underestimated).

We Argies already saw this shit coming. Argentina barely was able to made it into the World Cup, so the result is not that surprising. The team is a fucking clusterfuck. The DT was dumb enough to put Caballero as goalkeeper, even if he fucking sucks at it. Hopefully, this is failure will teach the Argentinian's Football Team to stop relying on Messi . Often Argies forgot that football is a teamwork sport and always rely on a good player to win the game. I blame Maradona for that.

Denmark 1 - 1 Australia

It was obvious that Australia (and Peru) would not do well with a group containing France (and Denmark as obvious Runner-Up here), but this was a nice little back-and-forth to start things off with. Other than that, after only having this draw and a heavy 2-0 loss to France... Farewell, Socceroos. Please come again; we know you will, even though you shouldn't that easily.

France 1 - 0 Peru

It was DEFINITELY obvious that a bunch of nobodies like Peru would get upset easily by France (and again, Denmark as very obvious Runner-Up here, of course.) if put into a group with them. I'm just happy they fought hard enough to not get too badly beaten, but the damage is done here. Enjoy the rest of that cold climate for a little bit longer, Peru - I hear Summer is like Hell itself back home; here's hoping no one gets hurt getting back home safely. Same with the Aussies.

As for the match itself - definitely nothing special. I just saw France cleaning house from a mile away, honestly.

Croatia 3 - 0 Argentina

THIS
is why I love World Cup action (sometimes); you never know what's gonna happen and I can't be happier that the better team advanced here. I know Croatia won't make it past Knockouts that easily, but I'd love to be surprised. Definitely a slow start, but an entertaining effort in the 2nd half.

As for Argentina - it's time to sort your shit out, guys. I was rooting for you that little bit, but in the end, you (and Nigeria) need to just go home. This group belongs to Croatia (Winners) and Iceland (Runners-up). Hope nothing bad happens to you on the trip home, boys. Other than that, get outta here!

See you tomorrow for hopefully more close and interesting games, Kiwis.

@CWCissey i thought you were OP. and could edit.. is that teams statistically eliminated.Do people actually have to die? Still trying to learn the rules... Newfeg here!

Yeah, I was referencing the Russian Ultras threatening to cause mayhem, if someone gets ganked or something and dies and it's provably linked to football hooliganism, the death count will change.

Argentina still has a theoretical chance to advance, as long as Iceland and Nigeria ties (Edit: or if Nigeria beats Iceland).

But I doubt they have the morale to pick themsellves up even if they get this chance.

EDIT2: ICE-NIG finished.

A somewhat funny situation now in Group D.
Everyone can take the second place (Croatia is guaranteed 2nd as worst and takes 1st if they get at least one point against Iceland). Iceland goes through with a win with at least two goals if ARG-NIG ends a tie or Arg wins but doesn't score more goals than Iceland.

Only thing certain is that Croatia gets through, but they still can lose 1st place to Nigeria. 2nd place in the group will probably face France, which should be significantly worce than probable runner-up Denmark. So it's still an important last match for them.
