Another reason is that they're both the last and most significant symbols in their set, they both use very similar colour motifs... there's a high number of similarities (though it might just be a coincidence and WoW was too pigheaded to change when someone brought up the comparison).

More than just WoW players. In general, the people who grew up resenting their pearl clutching parents of the late 80s and early 90s seem to have said "Hold my soy beer." and created a FAR MORE pearl clutching and censorous society in recent years. Violence in video games is OK and not harmful now, but now its sexism and racism in videogames that is very harmful, blah blah blah.

Warcraft wholesale ripping shit off from other universes isn't new but damn they waited very little time to straight out snatch that symbol. They didn't even make it a different color.

So according to this Twitter post and comments in this Reddit post, Blizzard pumped out 11,000 hotfixes for language filters today all at once (predominantly Chinese) and ended up DDOSing their own servers. This apparently killed some people's hardcore Season of Mastery characters, though I haven't seen confirmation of that.

Incompetence, thy name is Blizzard.
