World of Warcraft

The Greedy Emissary event will be returning in July, which includes a 10x drop rate increase on items in Legacy Raids (namely mounts). It sounds like Blizzard's trying to pump those numbers up for investor reports.

And the song in Hearthstone's Cinematic trailer for the upcoming Lost City of Un'Goro expansion sounds suspiciously like it's AI-generated.

What makes you think it is AI generated?

Not being accusatory, just curious what are things to look for.

I haven't kept up on the story, but what's this cutscene all about?
Seems to be getting lots of attention on X

I've always felt that the in-game cutscenes were half-baked and needed a lot of work.
Seems like they haven't really improved them much at all.

The lyrics sound like sentences that are just put in with a music tune. Also, the lyrics don't line up with the animations.

Also, do remember that Microsoft has been cost-cutting Blizzard's games HARD after the acquistion. Hearthstone's budget was slashed significantly with things such as only getting 1 board per year, mutliple game modes were removed, and game sets didn't have cinematic trailers because Blizzard wasn't getting China money since their contact with NetEase expired in 2023, but was renewed 1 year later. Blizzard has also been ramping up monetization hard to offset the declining player base with the Arena changes that made it more expensive to play, using the game's 10th anniversary as an excuse to monetize harder (i.e. $60 for Golden Hearth Stonebrew with some packs), and the "definitely not" $160 King Krush pet.

The issue isn't so much the quality of the cutscene (though it is pretty bad), as it is the nature of the story the cutscene takes place in, and the character it centres around. That there is Faerin Lothar, she's black, half-blind, and has lost an arm. She fights using a shield prosthesis. The story we got is that Stromgarde citizens are upset that the Alliance is overlooking them in order to send resources abroad to help the earthen, when half their homeland has been given away to the horde and famine is looming.

To add to the issues, banditry is on the rise, but of course the Stromic army has also been sent away to aid the earthen. If this was the whole story, I don't think many would complain. Stromgarde has ample reason to be upset with the Alliance. But unfortunately, we're told that the bandits are the ones stealing supplies the alliance did send to Stromgarde, so Stromgarde are directing their anger at the alliance for no reason at all, because the alliance never does anything bad. Additionally, the king of Stromgarde, who previously was so angry at orcs and trolls he chased them across the whole continent at the head of an army of fanatics and through the dark portal, just to wipe them all out, has had a change of heart and is now proclaiming that the Sons of Lothar stand for diversity and the humane treatment of any sentient being, including the poor victimised orcs and trolls.

The whole story is about how being upset with the alliance for ignoring the plight of Stromgarde for about thirty years in lore is foolish and wrongheaded, and we all need to sit down together and sing kumbaya. The story doesn't only ruin Stromgarde, it also ruins our beloved "bandit" factions the Defias (workers who got stiffed by the Stormwind nobles after rebuilding the city, and took up banditry to oppose them) and the Scarlet Crusade (Lordaeron natives who took up arms to hold back the onslaught of Scourge Undead, and then chose to not see a difference between those undead and the free-willed undead of Sylvanas' Forsaken, and continued fighting them, and any who supported them).

Also the quality is really bad, like insanely so.

- A cutscene fight ends in one single move
- The cutscene has a shaky camera for no discernable reason
- Faerin (the black one) is clearly a newer model and her armor looks like it has bulk and depth. Marran's chainmail looks like (and is) a flat image and could not signal more who is the 'main character'
- Faerin appaers to just be using a riding lance in regular combat for no discernable reason. It's a wildly impractical weapon and isn't fused to her body like the shield is
- Faerin has a shield fused to her body but blocks with the comically impractical lance just so the characters can have a power struggle chat
- Marran is using a single one handed weapon with no shield but it's also comically large enough to be two handed when needed
- A large scale fight consists of ~20 people
- Marran has a speech but WoW's over-the-top cartoon style makes it look absurd
- Marran has solid grey hair and comical granny glasses despite being 35-45 years old
- Another speech about martyrdom
- An enemy is left alive and allowed to leave with 0 consequence

And of course
- Your character is literally a background NPC

There is so much to pick apart but it's much harder to try and find a single thing they did correct. This is also just one of many terrible, terrible cutscenes and story beats that end with this. You (and Faerin) also get captured (but not killed, again, we're all friends here) prior to this and there are several speeches about tolerance, mercy, and so on.

His family has generationally hated orcs and trolls so much the fucking last name is Trollbane. Imagine getting diversity speeches from Richard Niggerstomper.

to make it more "action-y", like when they clash swords to make it feel like a "struggle". without it you'd just have to chars crossing blades.

It's bad when an MMO in near maintenance mode being worked on by a novice studio is making better content
it's worse when you remember this is the same game people endlessly meme'd on for it's shoddy ingame cutscenes.
(way back at launch there was a notorious stabbing clip worse than androma, wish I could find it again)

The 180 degree swivel they do at 0:09 is hilarious. How can anyone take this shit seriously? I get the engine is 20 years old and held together with duct tape, but this is just amatuer work. Love the saturday morning cartoon writing too.

Seeing shit like this is why I can't wait until WoW dies. (if it ever will.) It's the only way this IP has a chance at getting a new good game.

So uh...how much longer is this supposed powerful mage gonna be stuck in his cripple arc?
Imagine being one of the most powerful mages and you're lobotomized to the point where instead of using magic to walk, you conjure up a fucking ghost wheelchair for...reasons.

Every time I see retail WoW it gets worse and worse.
The factions are no longer at war with each other. At this point I would expect them to change the name of the game to "WOW!" or "World of WOW!" where "WoW" is no longer an acronym.

I wanted to say that HS irrepairably damaged WC's image, but who is actually, originally at fault here? Hearthstone began its descent into the "silly wholeseome wacky cutie patootie chungus" in 2015 when LoE released, giving us Reno and cards like murloc tinyfin:

Naxx and Blackrock Mountain had the right amount of humor and seriousness, and the latest expansions has fucking sunscreens, sandcastles and swimming pool lifeguards. Compare the original Lynessa vs... whatever this is supposed to be (went ahead and spared you from seeing the horror that were the obviously male giant grippers present in the second picture).

When did WoW begin spiralling into disabled anthro dragons in wheelchairs?

lol arthas' death cutscene at the end of wotlk almost 20 years ago looked better than that shit
And I thought THAT looked shit 20 years ago...

I have to keep remembering that the Alliance is now run by entertains the whims of a one-eyed, one-armed nigger sheboon when I try to peek into modern-day WoW. It's so ridiculous it's retarded, yet it's exactly the way things are.

[EDIT]: You mean to tell me they only have one leg of their trousers over their head right now? I shudder to think of what they'll come up with next...
