Personally I hope one day game developers end their obsession with live service titles, there isn't enough room in the market for all of them.

Palworld is basically the ultimate form of zoomer trash.

Its all popular trends cynically combined into a knock off popurri. As if a robot came up with it.

Reminds me of those spam channels on youtube that take trending topics for kids ans just combined them even if it makes no sense. "spiderman dancing reggaeton with elsa, skibidi toilet fortnite "

you're gonna be hoping for a very long time i fear.
live service is one of the best ways to deal with piracy, and also enables insanely profitable monetisation options.
any serious businessman in the field will 100% insist on doing things this way wherever possible.

Characters have to look like their voice actors.

What they did to Issac in the Dead Space remake pisses me off. Gone is the unassuming 30-40 year old dude with a receding hairline who looks tired as fuck proving that anyone can be a hero when the challenge is thrown at them, and instead we got this dumb looking football jock with the world's brownest hair.

Mining and Crafting survival games. I like survival games in some cases, but the formula of building a wooden version of tools to mine and craft the tools needed to build stone versions to mine and craft the tools needed to build iron versions etc. has already lost its charm. Terraria did that over a decade ago and it still hasn't been surpassed. I'd much rather game devs focus on food consumption and buffs from the food, like Zomboid and Valheim to an extent.

There was a controversy about the game using AI assets for its Pal models, I would not be surprised if the AI assistance did not stop there (you already have the AI, it’s cheap)

Speaking of cheap, I’ve noticed a trend with Early Access games asking Full Release prices. Palworld is $30 for example. Fuck off and finish your game.

Games where it was story first then some basic bitch gameplay shoehorned in.
Making gameplay a token afterthought in your cinematic experience is like producing a radio play, adding in a handful of still images, and selling it as a film.

Except everyone realizes the latter is bullshit, whereas the former is hailed as bold and creative and auteur-y.

Funny you say that because there's a movie called La Jetee that is literally just still images with dialog and sound but manages to feel infinitely more creative and well done than a modern film school students attempt at making an art film, let alone anything the sad dopes at Naughty Dog keep producing:

(It's also the basis for the Bruce Willis film "Twelve Monkeys")

I got pulled into a Palworld server and I have mixed thoughts. It's a Frankenstein. It cannot be described it in any other way than to reference the stuff it's ripped off. But despite its MMO-grind-or-recruit structure I hate to say that it kind of works.

The design of it is what sucks in the zoom-zooms, I think. All the Pals, even the ugly ones, are designed to be so aggressively cute that it evokes physiological responses. Like wanting to squish a stuffed animal because it robs you of your control. The Skinner box does the rest.

Anyway, on topic, it does have all the worst qualities of modern games including its staying power. No modern game will last more than a year because they're all so shallow.

Palworld is $30 for example. Fuck off and finish your game.
I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight that non-official servers and single player work just fine with a cracked version.

Dorks who are now dads wanting to make every game a story about a dad.

The 'Sad Dad' game genre was a real hit during the ps4/xbox one era, but its kinda started to die off now with GoW being the only exception. It seems people just arent as interested in their characters going full ''Muh Daughter' every twenty seconds anymore.

Definitely live service games. It's not enough to get paid once for something (and often $70/£50 at that), they want more and more money until the thing fizzles out and dies.

Reactions: Product Placement
The push for "relatable" main casts. I've never understood the argument that people make that they can't enjoy a story unless they can self-insert either through a character customizer or "relate" to bland, uninteresting writing. I can't even think of a game protagonist in recent years that strikes me as an interesting or stand-out character.

I play games as a form of entertainment first and escapism second. Why would I want to play as a self-insert or a character with DEI-safe and bland lore? I don't want to listen to literal thugs unironically lambasting their student loans and capitalism. Let me shoot my bugs, fly my jets, swing my swords, and drive my cars. I'd rather be nameless and faceless than suffer through modern game characterization.

I mentioned in another thread that the "live service" fad is extremely reminiscent of the post-WoW MMORPG craze and that ended in dozens of failed games, dozens more cancelled games, defunct studios, millions and millions of dollars lost, and nearly the death of that entire genre.

It sucks to be in the middle of a fad while it's happening, but they never last forever and tend to implode quite spectacularly once audiences turn on them.

I noticed a lot of "gamers" that claimed to love these games back pedal when I got annoyed with them talking about them all the time and called them fucking pussies for crying at daddy games.

Its really amazing just how many gamers are sheep to whatever person they currently have some sort of interaction with wether real or digital.
