Worst Trends In Gaming

The push for "relatable" main casts. I've never understood the argument that people make that they can't enjoy a story unless they can self-insert either through a character customizer or "relate" to bland, uninteresting writing. I can't even think of a game protagonist in recent years that strikes me as an interesting or stand-out character.
This. I do not understand the crying for muh representation especially when the people whinning for it are asking for it only want skin-deep superficial characteristics and no real personality or interesting quirks (and not the lolrandom type of quirks twatter loves). Just want a quirky black gay character who can be summed up as that and nothing else defining.

Ironically, despite all the borderline to outright racist shit the Japanese get from western game journos, I can think of dozens of diverse characters from a wide a range of ethnic backgrounds and sexuality than anything the dorks out here in the west has produced and they've been good at that shit since the 90s.

Not exclusive to games but I really hate when the writers feel like they have to shove in a quip every 2 lines, especially when it's during gameplay it's really fucking annoying
A showcase for pretty good chatter was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time more than 20 years ago. The stuff he says to himself and to his periodic companion during gameplay does a lot to flesh out the character's gradual arc from spoiled asshole prince to self-sacrifice, rather than just "could I BE any more sardonic?" quipping in modern games.

Of course, all that requires you to have a character with a personality and character arc in the first place, which is like garlic to the vampire of modern gaming.

Mining and Crafting survival games. I like survival games in some cases, but the formula of building a wooden version of tools to mine and craft the tools needed to build stone versions to mine and craft the tools needed to build iron versions etc. has already lost its charm. Terraria did that over a decade ago and it still hasn't been surpassed. I'd much rather game devs focus on food consumption and buffs from the food, like Zomboid and Valheim to an extent.
I have a theory about this.

If we go back to 1999 there used to be this game called "Everquest" and in Everquest you slowly over time gained gear. Importantly, two of your slots in your inventory were dedicated to Food and Water which gave you passive regeneration.

Years later when the MMO genre grew stagnant due to the success of WoW and everyone trying to clone it, a game called Minecraft came along.

Minecraft was actually very MMO like aside from the part where it was usually single player or on smaller multiplayer servers. It had a big open world that could be dangerous. You got stronger by getting better gear and better resources, and interestingly you had food and water that kept you alive.

Over time most survival games have generally followed this trait. They have a lot of the character development you might see in an MMORPG condensed. What's interesting though is that over time the genre seems to be splitting into two directions.

One one hand you have games like Conan Exiles, Day Z, and Nightingale that seem to want higher player counts and more time in game while on the other hand you see games like Valheim, Zomboid, and Enshrouded that seem to be going more for smaller scale co-op experiences.

I think the survival genre as we know it, where you have vital resources you have to get or you will die will continue to get smaller scale in games like Zomboid, Enshrouded, and Valheim where they're primarily like 16 player co-op PVE games where the difficulty is not starving.

On the other hand the larger games like Conan Exiles, Arc, and Day Z are going to make the survival requirement's like food and water less and less mandatory. They're going to want larger player counts and so things like food and water will become passive buffs. In short, they're gonna turn back into the MMORPGs that spawned them and the cycle will be complete.

Personally as an MMORPG enjoyer, I am excited for this to finally happen, as most survival games aren't good or unique enough to really be worth their time.

I can't even think of a game protagonist in recent years that strikes me as an interesting or stand-out character.

I play games as a form of entertainment first and escapism second. Why would I want to play as a self-insert or a character with DEI-safe and bland lore? I don't want to listen to literal thugs unironically lambasting their student loans and capitalism. Let me shoot my bugs, fly my jets, swing my swords, and drive my cars. I'd rather be nameless and faceless than suffer through modern game characterization.
I don't get this either and not even just for games (or for that matter anything else) that are just supposed to be dumb fun but even games with a somewhat serious story. How the hek am I supposed to "relate" to say Arthur Morgan or John Marston from Red Dead Redemption 2? I'm not an outlaw and have no interest in being one in the real world, but I enjoy the characters regardless

I maintain voice acting ruined game writing. I kind of miss getting paragraphs-long explanations of background stuff so I could understand the world better. For something a smidge more recent, cosmetic microtransactions. I remember when we had to play the game for those and now you just buy them with daddy's (or yours, if you're dumb) credit card.

Palworld is basically the ultimate form of zoomer trash.

Its all popular trends cynically combined into a knock off popurri. As if a robot came up with it.

Reminds me of those spam channels on youtube that take trending topics for kids ans just combined them even if it makes no sense. "spiderman dancing reggaeton with elsa, skibidi toilet fortnite "
Yeah but it has a rape themed pokemon though. Which is simultaneously original and highly popular

The 'Sad Dad' game genre was a real hit during the ps4/xbox one era, but its kinda started to die off now with GoW being the only exception. It seems people just arent as interested in their characters going full ''Muh Daughter' every twenty seconds anymore.
They should bring the JASON! trend back. In my heart it never died

Crafting
Minning
"Side quests" you feel obligated to do so you wont fall behind
"Open" world
Walking cutscenes were you can "interact" with the game
Cutscenes every 5 minutes
Mini games such as having a card game or a riddim game
Climbing towers (Ubisoft towers)

all of these can be found in one game. Final Fantasy 7 rebirth. all of these things exist in the game just to drag it out as much as possible to keep the nigger cattle busy.

for more online focus games,

Battle Pass (the worst so far, the game rewards you for longlining everyday and farming missions as much as possible, turning it into a Daily job and you STILL need to pay money to unlock it)
Games as a Live Service
Gatcha gambling

the abundance of "crafting mechanic" games. After Minecraft blew up in like 2012 the market got super saturated with copycat titles and spoofs. Now years later it still hasn't really subsided. After a while the whole crafting system in most of these games just feels like "menu-ing" which really kills the experience for me.

The concept that a game can be playable ONLY online. TF2 and CSS (by extension, CS2) have offline modes with bots and with a little help from plugins, different upgrades to offline play. The fact that games like R6S and Valorant cannot be accessed without internet makes me seethe with rage.

How everything that isn't indie just got to go through a massive series of PR checkmarks before being released (not saying that indie devs are heckin wholesome saviors of gaming either),
When devs have to appeal to the speedrun communities and competitive.
The fact that there are no map editors anymore and devs are afraid of fan creativity because it can turn into competition like Dota 2

Fixation on graphics and having a "cinematic experience" over fun gameplay.

Ugly characters whose skin color and sexuality are used as lazy cruise control for personalities.

Fixation on "realism", as if video games exist for any reason other than a reprieve from our boring real lives.

I get your point, but it's also like digital crack. Stardew Valley nearly turned me into Gollum.
A large amount of women being made to look like troons in games made by western developers is definitely a negative development in my eyes. I miss the days where Laura Croft and her knock offs were the norm in the western gaming sphere.
Mortal Kombat, the bane of Jack Thompson, bent the knee in this regard by making the chicks ugly and frumpy, as if Ronda Rousey doesn't get in the ring wearing only a sports bra and shorts.

You can get a detailed anatomy lesson by seeing Sonya Blade get decapitated and disemboweled, but Anita forbid you enjoy looking at her when she's alive and intact.

I thought this was Chip Z'Nuff for a second.

I forgot all about this fat troon.

Anyway, live service getting out of hand horrifies me. I want to own things and be happy.

As a woman it's very offensive. The companies used to come out and say they wanted more realistic looking women in games because sexism/male gaze whatever. Ok then, why all the potato faces and Manjaw McHRT's? Is that what women are supposed to think they look like when they play as or interact with female characters? I don't really want to play as fugs because some woke bozo is trying to gather asspats from SJW types that complain about chainmail bikinis, jiggle physics and big boobs but are not going to play these games anyway. Stop alienating the people that actually pay your bills.

I think that they are going for that troonish look to make troons more comfortable. Like Abby from The Last of Us 2. That sex scene looked like two dudes barebacking. And as I recall it was made to mask any femininity Abby might be hiding somewhere so everyone felt included. Plus she looks like a man. Like Eddie Furlong's jacked cousin from out of town or something. Repulsive.🤮
