I think the Internet has been a positive on humanity. The access to information has produced one of the most well educated generations. But I can’t help but notice how many issues social media causes from attention whoring too people obsessively comparing themselves to they friends and Internet celebrities do you think it would be a net positive if social media was removed or at least restricted heavily if you want a picture imagine pre-2007 Internet

Remove real life details and accounts. Force anonimity across all sectors of the Internet (how it used to be!) and all problems solve themselves immediatley.

Psychologically, we associate/sympathise with people who have real names; John, fred, steve. We do not associate with random names or numbers, which is why lab rats and monkeys are NOT allowed to be given names, but instead numbers. Same reason the Armed forces are given numbers.

"Social Media" doesn't work. You can't drop everyone in the same pot and expect them to get along. Things naturally evolve over time as one group will rise to the top and dictate the community's code of conduct. What makes social media particularly bad, is that unlike the forums of old, they are not run by average joes acting as admins, mods, and jannies but are instead replaced by billionaires, suits, and algorithms who have no vested interest in their online communities and only care about profits. That's the reason why informative discussion is discouraged in favor of bite-sized blips of info and trash that gets more engagement in the form of likes, updoots, retweets, shares, what-have-you.

With all that in mind, social media is devoid of gatekeeping so that everyone and their grandma can use it without the fear of being cast out and shat on by the rest of the community for failing to fit in; and that's the majority of Internet users nowadays. None of those will abandon social media in favor of a smaller forum that gatekeeps, because fitting in requires effort and lacks the sweet dopamine rush of getting a constant stream of validation for dogshit takes.

In a way, this is good since it acts as a containment for normies that would otherwise absolutely shit up every nook and cranny of the Internet. The downside is that no one except for a handful of people will get actually worthwhile information and that places like plebbit truly are "the frontpage of the Internet."

And that's why this;
The access to information has produced one of the most well educated generations.
Is unfortunately not true.

Social Media will never work and all any of us can hope is that they stay in their containment zone.

No. People are in general pigs and therefore anything that has been done one social media in any good or bad sense would just be done in some other way off it.

The national IQ drops every year. People don't bother to actually learn anything because they can just google it instead. Kids aren't out here reading digital science journals, they're playing fortnite and watching twitch hot tub streams.
You do know that IQ tests are more about problem solving and critical thinking and not about knowledge right?
And that the national IQ is actually rising and has been because the new generation of kids have learned to navigate through technology and they play video games with similar problem solving puzzles commonly found in most IQ tests.

And thats why most people with very high IQs are usually autistic spergs. Basically some Rainman shit

I contest this. While I've used it as a receptacle of information for study and to know what not to be taught (information superhighway forever motherfuckers), people getting stupider everyday just happens to be a greater underlying symptom.

It's not exactly the Internet's fault that such information and how to study and use your mind when society worships contradictory extremes and makes learning look like a chore and bore. It's like how a library or a book shouldn't be blamed because a popular hangout next door or TV/Youtube has more people going over there. That speaks more about the people and what is in charge wants than general civilizational infrastructure.

It could be a good thing, but in its current form, it is a problem. Way too much absolute lunacy starts on social media, but I would argue that that's more of a product of social media + secular democracy, and not social media on its own. People attention whore on social media because fame equals money and relevance under the current structure.

Well, there's another reason for that, but that is not really to the point of this thread.

I think social media could be great if there was no divisiveness involved at all, as that's a huge part of what makes it shitty. Like, as soon as anyone points a finger or starts ranting about "those people," for any reason no matter their agenda, their fucking ass is permabanned. Or, alternatively, just anything to do with politics, religion, or culturally sensitive topics is completely banned and invoking any of that shit is also an insta permaban.

Social media would have been cool in the 90s
I get your thinking, but I'm afraid if we had social media in the 90's the decay in society we've been seeing lately would have probably just started then instead. Which means shit would just be even worse now...or maybe the worst of the shit would already be over by now and we'd be seeing the light at the end of the woods? Who knows?
