This sparked a lot of controversy on twitter and I wanted to see if the people here skew differently than the results over there

There's zero downside to pressing the red button.

Either you survive because lots of people pressed the blue button, or you survive because you pressed the red button.

This is the least hard trolley problem in the world. The only people this will affect negatively are pathological empathy retards who would rather save Everyone In The World™ and die trying than just saving themselves and everyone they love by telling them to press the Red button.

This is a flawed prisoner's dilemma setup where they failed to realize that you have to introduce a downside to everyone choosing selfishly. In this arrangement, there is no downside to everyone hitting red, and everyone should realize this at the same time, resulting in no deaths.

I think it's more to speak of the morality of a individual. It's a look how some demographics view empathy, seeing it as a personal moral validation; to prove themselves as a savior for the dumb, than to chose the rational choice and to hope others do the same. If you press red, you survive no matter the outcome, the only failing is that people too dumb to see that would get themselves kill, and so that is the rationality of pressing blue if feeling the need to help others, even if it goes against self preservation.

Isn’t there something missing? What’s the downside for red? Am I misunderstanding it? Surely everyone presses red and no one dies? Are some people not told what will happen or something?

The downside for pressing red is that you're a BIG FAT MEANIE!!!! who doesn't care what happens to all the good people who pressed blue!!!

This would be interesting if it was applied worldwide as a 30 second quicktime event, or everyone having to answer it in a vacuum without knowing what others pick. What types of people and demographics would survive/die? Because a lot of people would definitely die (unless more than half actually pressed blue which is unlikely)

What's the controversy then?

Being retarded or not?
there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with blue voters brains
they cant comprehend everyone can just vote red
they are certain some people will vote blue, they have made an assumption, and then take action on that unproven second order effect. It sort of reminds me of them thinking black people aren't capable of obtaining good academic test scores or following laws so they must give them a bonus score to have an equal academic score to everyone else, or letting them off for murder because they don't comprehend that murder is wrong.
maybe they think other people are voting randomly, and aren't acting in self interest.

the worst i've seen is they equate voting red with pulling a lever to kill people. its not my problem if someone else votes to potentially kill themselves in 50% of their button's outcomes. my button's outcomes have 100% chance of me living. many have called it a suicidal empathy test

I think its interesting and wish I could see an experiment where if blue voters lose the 50% they get tased or something.

if this is really the entire world population, then id go blue because id feel like the majority would too go blue just to save everyone. also i like blue more than red.
