I've got some time to kill while I wait to borrow the neighbors snow shovel, so let's look at some more Wrong Planet silliness!

But before we do, I'm going to put an offer out there for people. If you're a Kiwi who also uses WrongPlanet, and you see one of your posts in any screen grabs and would not like it there, shoot me a PM and I'll quietly censor or remove it. We've had enough people coming in to this thread to say they are/were members that I think this offer should be made especially if people have integrated themselves here.

I'm pretty suspicious that the OP is actually Night Vale's own Apache Tracker. Also this thread is graced by forum superstar Sweetleaf who, if he didn't have 20,000 fucking posts, would be worth looking in to for all the bizarre shit he's said over the years.

Also, I'm quite positive her evil doctor warned her of the risks that Risperdal carries, including tardiv dyskinesia. But nah, higher doses of a medication that you generally need to be on forever and over 30 years has up to a 70%-ish chance of causing permanent Parkinson's like issues is just someone being an oppressive quack.

I think a large part of the perception is because people with very high IQs on the autism spectrum tend to cluster more in professions with less social interaction (i.e. natural sciences, math, engineering) than say, medicine or law. Since those professions are stereotypically associated with "geniuses," people just get the idea that Aspergers correlates with intelligence.

If anyone is interested, here's a very quick bit of info about autism diagnosis... (oversimplifying a lot but didn't want to derail too much)

Asperger's diagnosis (prior to DSM-5): a person who struggled with the same general symptoms as someone with autism (though perhaps to a milder scale), except typically with an average or higher intelligence (i.e., standard IQ score above 85) and without language complications (i.e., able to speak and communicate with others). Now, of course, Asperger's has been merged onto the autism spectrum in the DSM-5's diagnostic criteria, something that had a high amount of criticism.

Now, autism diagnosis has generally been simplified to the individual fulfilling the following general criteria: deficits in social interaction / social reciprocity, and restricted or repetitive interests. These both need to be evident since the early developmental period, and not better explained by intellectual disability. Each criteria is rated by level of severity.

As a side note, I am sorry to hear from some people in this thread about their troubles with therapists or ABA practices. :( ABA is actually not supposed to be punitive and is meant to adapt the individual's environment to be reinforcing so that they feel and react more positively and do not become overstimulated or have a self-injuring meltdown. It always sucks to hear about mental health professionals who misapply behavioral principles to be punishing to the individual.

Active discussion lists are a forum staple, displaying the most recently posted in threads. A difference between Wrong Planet and other forums I've witnessed is their members absolutely LOVE counting and you will see this list filled with at least 2 counting threads at any time. This cap is a more common occurrence than you would think.
