I was split if this should be in the multimedia forum instead, I can change it if its the case but here you go anyways.

This is to talk about gaslighting, usually its last stages, of the corporate handled assassination of most of our cultural icons.

First they take what you love, either they already own it or they buy it
Then they change it, almost always for the worse
Then they deny that it is different now, using mainstream media and their fucking bug men simps to defend them on social media.
Then they admit the changes but pretend that they are for the better, using the same tactics as before
Then they admit that the bad stuff isnt a big deal
We eventually lead into one of the final stages

"X was always bad/silly/this way, what are you talking about?"

This happened most recently with Jurassic World Dominion. The movie is absolute trash (but I guess it was better than Lightyear...which isnt a difficult thing to do but I digress). Filled with plotholes and with a setting that was ludicrous to start (how are dinossaurs not haunted down by the military and just allowed to roam around freely?) This isnt a movie that wants you to think.

And when I bring it up, Im met with this line
"Jurassic Park was always stupid/bad/silly, what are you talking about?"

And it hit me, I hear that all the time when this happens. Especially when the defenders ran out of excuses. I see articles saying "X series/brand was always bad/stupid, only now you are catching on?" or some variation of such.

I remember a time when J.P was a philosophical masterpiece over the argument if men should play God or not and the consequences of doing so just because you can (and not stop because you didnt think if you should). It had a lot to say outside of the dinos and effects. The sequels were silly but they never took away from the amazing original.

Really feels that when we got to Dominion, any remains of the philosophical DNA of the original is just gone at this point, and this became just another franchise making a movie because of course they are and bringing old actors back because we gotta squish dem member berries.

And then when people properly call it stupid, we are told it was always like this. It happened with Terminator, Star Wars, Dr Who and many many more. Its a coping mechanism as well as a gaslighting tactic to trick gullible minds to believe it always had this level of quality, therefore we wont compare it to the better stuff that came before.

It was pathetic before but now it just feels...sad and a bit scary. They destroyed what we loved, shamelessly so, and had the courage of pretend that it was always like this and we are just misremembering.

What you guys think?

In most cases everything was always stupid, it just used to be entertaining instead of boring or annoying. I'd make the argument that "it was always stupid" is more shorthand to say "it's been stupid longer than it hasn't" though.

It's just a general thing that happens when you try to force something beyond it's natural life, it gets dumber the more they have to make excuses or reasons for the story to continue. Putting woke retards in charge doesn't really help things either.

Honestly, though, why care if people think something you liked is stupid or not? It's all just entertainment. Just call them retarded faggots and ignore them from that point on.

Depends on how stupid it was. Sometimes it just gets stupid than the stupid it was

A lot of shit in popular culture is stupidly overrated. That is an absolute fact. I'm not going to dispute that modern media is bankrupt of ideas and everything good and decent has been or is in the process of being run into the ground, but at the same time people need to realize a lot of things they cherish in popular culture were propped up by advertising campaigns and false consensus.

Jurassic Park is a bit of an extreme example since while I do think the first movie is somewhat overrated it still generally holds up, and frankly I have to wonder who these people are you're referring to who would say JP has always been stupid or terrible. Maybe stop hanging out with Zoomers if you don't want shit taste opinions on media.

Most of the time, I’d like to pretend that it‘s just whatever and move on. If anything, I see a lot of contrarians try their best to pretend that most entertainment was not always silly, bad or stupid.

If anything, they just like to pretend to not be like those other fans that stuck with them over the years.

Now a real unpopular opinion would be that you can’t say the same thing about the Minions. Most people know that they’re stupid, bad and/or silly,b ut they just flat out don’t care. I, at least, respect them a lot more than the ones forcing themselves to dislike them to appease to a pseudo-social circle that will be quick to consoom and move on to the next trend.

West World was non-retarded during the first season, then second season went off the rails and stopped giving a shit. This sort of switch from thought-out and well constructed to braindead is a thing that happens with a lot of media and I refused to be bullshitted on the matter.

The problem is that they will try to convince you it was always like this/meant to be this and that you are the one wrong to think otherwise.
Peak gaslighting

Can we agree that Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were always bad?

JP1 is still a good movie, so good that the cgi which is outdated people don't even notice because of how good the rest of the movie is.

Could be an envy thing. I've once heard Whatifalthist argue that modern people like to take a big steaming shit on their predecessors because they know on some level they can't measure up to them, and that's what drives the woke iconoclasm we've been seeing for the past 10 years. Would make perfect sense that the modern entertainment industry, with its leanings that we all know, would do the same to their own franchises that their classmates did to the people who built our society. If you can't one-up them, pretend they were just as bad as you.

I kind of thing that "A lot of shit" is stupidly over-rated and also "A lot of shit" is stupidly under-rated.

Things aren't allowed to be Average anymore.

Its the irony problem, things in the past weren't afraid to be earnest in their attempts even if the outcome wasn't quite good or was ridiculous when objectively viewed. Now people are so irony poisoned they are afraid of being sincere about anything.

I'm beyond tired of people complaining about how things used to be but still engage in shilling out their money to the same corporations that continually fuck them over.
You could make a movie about superheroes shitting, and slap a Marvel logo over it and people would still buy those movie tickets.

Admittedly the problem with that is mainly people tend to forget about average experiences.
