Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

Striking a deal with Saudis and showing everyone the boot right the next day:

They might actually turn this dumpster fire profitable.

Rumours are floating around on some gaming sites that Microsoft have laid-off their entire physical games department. That is to say, if the rumours are true, Microsoft will never make another physical game again.
What the fuck even is a "physical games department"?

Like the place that actually stamps the disks?

Funny enough, this actually might push me to buy a Series X as I want it for a Bluray player as much as I want to play my old Xbox games.

From what I can understand from the rumours, it is the department that handles the manufacturing, logistics, marketing etc for the physical disc pipeline; from creation to sales, from artwork to shipping.

It adds more fuel to the fire that Microsoft will go digital/streaming only with Gamepass, and have 3rd parties create Xbox consoles.

Toys for bob layoffs make me lol because I remember so many banjo kazooie fags reaching hard into the idea that if the deal went through then it would mean new banjo kazooie game since since the studio or someone at it mentioned wanting to make one or some shit
doesn't look so hot now and haven't heard a word from them regarding it
Plus it isn't a mighty loss. They didn't do much with Spyro and Crash during the Skylanders years, but when they finally did with the remastered ports of Crash 1-3, CTR and Spyro 1-3, they were hoping the get two franchises back on track, but then they co-developing "the actual" Crash 4, and it turned out to be shit. That, and ActiBlizz shoehorned in microtransactions and loot crates for nu-CTR

my hopes of seeing a PC release for CTR Nitro Fuel has been crushed.

i also read somewhere that Sunset Overdrive didint sell fuck all during its release. which is a pity since that game is pretty damn good.

the cost of being a launch title for Xbone one i guess.

I was gonna suggest Rayman and Tomb Raider, but they were actually Sega exclusives first before they ended up being popular on Sony
Tomb Raider, yes, but not Rayman. Rayman was built with the SNES in mind, but that idea was scrapped for an Atari Jaguar game, and was SUPPOSED to be THE exclusive mascot game for it. And then the Atari jaguar actually happened... so they shifted to port the game to fucking everything. PS1 was first, then Saturn, and then eventually Windows and then years later on the GBA and DSi.

Incidentally each version has minor differences between them (outside of the obvious handheld ones at least)
  • Jaguar - complete lack of ice physics, a less-refined soundtrack, fewer animations, and the fact that the final world, Candy Chateau, has entirely different levels.
  • PS1/Saturn - Saturn has some nice graphical touches, which is expected since the Saturn was a 2D BEAST compared to the PS1. Also regaring the "YEAH!" jingle at the end, "YEAH!" finish jingle the Saturn arrangement extends the jingle with a bit of a rock flair to it. like the dancing Rayman, it is in the PlayStation port, but used only in Japanese version and, strangely, stored with the music, not with the sound.
  • Windows - Includes Rayman Designer (mario maker except rayman) and a "By The Fans" game that has fan-made levels in it. This one is on GOG and is called "Rayman Forever"

Not really on topic, but I am curious why a lot of devs did these changes to theur games from port to port that aren't due to hardware restrictions. I get why the Saturn version would look better than the PS1 version and the PC version has an editor unlike the other versions or the Jaguar having a different level order due to being cartridge based, but why the soundtrack changes, the changes in sound effects, and the removal of ice physics in the Jaguar version. They seem kinda arbitrary.

but why the soundtrack changes
To be fair, all the versions post-Jaguar use the same arranged redbook audio (including the GBA, except it's MIDI, and its pitch-shifted REALY FUCKING HIGH for some ungodly reason), and those arranged tracks are like about 90% similar to the O.G. Jaguar version, just with some tracks sped up, slown down, or just replaced by other tracks.

Back then, arranged tracks tend to sometimes go off the rails and do their own thing. MMX3 for example on PS1/Saturn does a jazzy tune in the opening stage compared to the O.G. SNES version

But even in the 16 bit era this was going on. Mortal Kobat SNES kept the original arcade song to the pit while the Genesis did it's own thing

However, the actual pit song DOES get used in the Genesis version, just as the Hall stage song instead

I think it just boils down the different composers and what they want to do with the game. Regarding the MK examples, the SNES Music credit is Dan Forden while the Genesis credit is Matt Furniss.

If anything, Nintendo's gonna make gang-busters from the exodus that will ensue. I know this is gonna make me sound like a Nintendo simp, but as someone who isn't tech-savvy, I can at least appreciate that Nintendo has no reason to go digital-only since their online services are trash, even WITH help from Microsoft to polish out the connectivity issues early on in Switch 1.O's lifespan.
