Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Phil Spencer has now been leading Xbox since 2014, and been "Executive Vice President of Gaming" since 2017.
It gets funnier every year when people online claim that this will be the year Phil Spencer saves Xbox, man is now probably the longest running CEO of Xbox, and the current state of things ain't good
They're better than when Don Mattrick was running things. That said, their game output is severely lacking.

I hope Xbox addresses their DRM after their outage a few days ago.

I couldn't care less about Don Mattrick over emphasising TV as a selling point for Xbox One in 2013, also Xbox One being a WiiU tier retarded name. But no one can deny that he sunk way too much resources into the Kinect in an attempt to grab the casual market, and was completely tone deaf when it came to the mandatory Internet connection issue

But it just feels like Phil hasn't been able to divert the funds from the dropped Kinect bullshit towards anything substantial, sure, Microsoft is buying studios left and right, but that has yet to capture the glory days of the 360

It was confusing. Who buys a gaming console to watch TV?

Now the Series S is that reality. I'm hearing they're making a disc drive expansion for it. So now it'll be a Sega CD.

it was only confusing for zoomers.

basically, before the internet and everyone had a pc in their pocket, people got their news and entertainment from a single source: their TV - which was usually in their living room, where people spend hours just sitting and socializing, if not doing literally everything in there. so the holy grail for the tech industry back then, for the longest while, was to "own" the "digital living room". microsoft owned the desktop, google the internet, apple the (by then still nonexistant or small) phone market and other mobile devices like ipod. just think how many TVs are out there, and now imagine your company becomes the microsoft/google/apple of TVs and their content.
you could argue microsoft's end goal from the start was to get a foothold there via the xbox, so for anyone paying attention ms "suddenly" going TVTVTVSPORTSTV wasn't surprising. it's understandable how a lot of microsoft dicks got macrohard at that thought.

the problem however was that by 2013 when the xbone came out consumer behavior in how and where they access content had shifted - by now people read and watched shit on their tablet or phone, directly from the cloud or other online services, and if they watched TV (which was also digital now) they did it via their tivo for specific stuff they wanted to see.
ironically they all were both too late and too early, considering smartTVs are basically what they always wanted to be, and good luck trying to get one without that shit now.

Phil seems like a good laid back kinda guy and would be a good leader if those under him knew what they were doing. But I've come to the conclusion that while he does seem to know about the industry and is genuinely interested in making games a focus for MS, his style is counterproductive considering those under him.

Best example is the shitshow that is 343 Industries. They have a sure thing, and have shit the bed every single time. Each time is arguably worse than the one before. The studio leadership should have been scrutinized and dealt with long before Infinite considering Halo 5. The problems and delays with Infinite should have made him go into full hands on mode. If they had to reboot development might as well have gone all the way, just clean house and start over completely.

Even now, after all these problems, the people charged with fixing it are the same that have repeatedly caused them in the first place. It's baffling to me how after failing so many times they remain in their positions.

Xbox spent $300 million just to have Lara Croft on their marketing?

Their exclusives are so paltry, they have to use a CAR and another IP to sell themselves.
Also putting in the original look for Marcus Fenix seems weird considering he hasn't looked like that since 2011

Also who is this supposed to be?

The chin is crimson chin tier with a douche patch, but everything else looks weirdly feminine

I think that was supposed to be Scalebound.
No wonder they canceled it
I honestly don't know what the plan for Microsoft is at this point. They're buying studios, but whenever they do production begins to crawl at a near standstill, and the few games they do release each year are multiplatform titles. Like why did Psychonauts 2 release on the PS4? Was that a personal demand by Tim Schafer? They created a studio in 2009 called Compulsion Games headed by former Arkane Studios devs who proceeded to make two mediocre games in 13 years, now they own Arkane too, like what's the longterm goal here?
Speaking of Arkane Studios, how do you go from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic to Deathloop and Redfall? Like there's nothing left of the original company in that place right?

the perks of fuck you money and market dominance. they're basically the much bigger and burly version of valve, with the mental capacity of inbred google. just look at all their projects and acquisitions in the past (like zune or nokia), or the horror stories from the windows team. they' also drunk the woke koolaid hard, the thought alone of firing some proud POC/female manager probably triggers a company wide windows messenger alert.

however, people should be glad that ms is that incompetent, otherwise they would be worse than google. remember during the 360 days devs had to pay for patches (idea being devs will make sure their game are as bug free as possible fucking lol). buggy game? well fuck you, enjoy your new coaster. and you couldn't even use fucking internet explorer without paying for gold. free games? nigga what are you smoking? that only happened after sony did it with ps+ and pissed all over them that e3. you could go as far and also blame mandatory ps+ on them too, since it showed sony there are millions of retards willing to take it up the ass just to get their console online. sony gets arrogant and stupid when at the top, microsoft at the top is absolute aids.

hardly ever is. you could probably cross-check the credits of most games and there might be some managers being the same or people moving up, but that's about it. don't forget they're also french, they're literally proto-canadians.

Not to be the @Marissa Moira of Xbox, I think that Kotaku article made one good point but simplified it too far. Xbox does not have vital exclusives, yes. But Game Pass is still a great value. I do wish they add more games to Cloud Gaming.

No, being a @Marissa Moira is saying there is nothing wrong with Game Pass, but then when shown issues you then move the goal post

It is for now, but so was Netflix like a decade ago. Buffet-style platforms like those always tend to slip in value because everything is subsidized, and content farms are gonna get in on that sweet Game Pass moola, all cranking out soulless shit because they don't need to worry about direct sales. That's my biggest concern with Game Pass.

Also like, the whole buffet shit, like, when movies cost a few bucks to rent, ~$15 to buy, and only take a couple of hours to watch, Netflix at its peak seemed like a great deal. With games, though, and how they can take eons to play through, Game Pass isn't really that great of a deal. You do get a huge library, but how many are you realistically going to play?

Honestly moving goalposts is part of the problem I have with these services, they will change over time it's part of the nature of them. And Yeah the Netflix comparison that pissmaster made is accurate.

I just recently wanted to watch all the Star Trek shows on Amazon Prime only to find out they've been removed and put on Paramount+ so instead of going through the remaining seasons of DS9 and watching voyager, I can't and have to pay a separate fee. If these services take off for games, every company is going to want a slice of the pie which then dilutes the offerings of the original larger services like Playstation+ and Gamepass .

So it's like I'd rather just buy the blu-rays so my credit card isn't charged because I forgot to cancel a day before the trial runs out because I was busy or some shit. I don't want to feel pressured to sit through something because an arbitrary time limit is set to go off.

Wouldn't this not be possible on console? Why the hell would Microsoft or Sony allow a competing subscription service on their ecosystem?
