Y The Last Man thread

I love the comic.

This show was boring as fuck. Yorick was a minor character in his own show and the whole thing was so up it’s own ass with social Justice crap.

I tapped out halfway through the second episode when they spent half an hour with boring “trans men” characters.

LOL, this show was in development hell for the longest time and gets cancelled barely in it's first season. I haven't watched this show, but I knew it wouldn't last with the amount of articles talking about how it handles the "trans issues" and nothing about the actual plot of the show. I imagine the upcoming Halo show that got moved to Paramount+ from Showtime will suffer a similar fate by this time next year.
I think that one of the reasons it was cancelled it's because it spent so much time in development hell. They've probably lost so much time and money to produce this shit that it wouldn't be acceptable if it had less than stellar ratings. Of course the troon pandering had its weight as well.

But apparently even the trans brigade is happy that it's cancelled since, in their opinion, it brings about a "transwomen genocyde narrative", it's anti-science, anti-trans and spreads the idea that chromosomes=gender.

This sounds completely gay and I've never watched it, but the premise isn't bad, you could do it a couple of ways:

* Sexy comedy version where some loser guy (Jason Alexander's character from Seinfeld) is suddenly the most wanted man on Earth, having to fend off supermodels, horny female politicians and CEOs, FEMA trying to kidnap him and force him to be a sperm donor, and radical feminist/eco terrorists trying to assassinate him.

* Serious drama apocalyptic version where there's suddenly 4 billion dead and the survivors are trying to stop society collapsing while racing against time for some kind of cure or workaround before the human race ages into extinction or sees its food chain collapse

It sounds like they chose option C instead - trash TV nobody was interested in watching.

Human cloning isn't a satisfying solution, because it sounds like a dumb deus ex machina ending and they probably didn't think through any of the interesting problems and side effects. Like, that shit is extremely difficult and resource intensive so who gets to decide who gets cloned?

The animal world would also be completely fucked due to no longer being able to fuck (good luck cloning hundreds of billions of mammals and fish in time to stop the biggest die off since the Permian extinction).

Dr. Mann's father killed all the men through morphogenetic fields because once you start cloning humans males aren't required

This seems like a strange and genocidal assumption, and I wonder if they ever explored that. Males aren't required for what and by whom, exactly? It sounds kinda like the creepy incel meme about their sex robots "replacing" women.

And this isn't even taking into account 99% of the promotion for the show was just talking about trans issues or listing off social justice 101 checklist points instead of the actual fucking story.
That's always a kiss of death for a show's quality. If they won't talk about anything other than the diversity and progressive nature of the show and the people who are working on it, that means they won't be able to get people to watch based on quality. They've prioritised idpol over talent, and it always shows.

It's not surprising that people with little actual talent think they're geniuses - that's quite common. But with so much woke media nowadays there's been people like that hired to make products that they use as a way to ham-fistedly propagandise, believing that there's this untapped market of people who will watch anything woke, in a very, 'Nobody I know voted for Nixon' way. What they don't realise is that while there's lots of woke consoomers, they don't make the effort to watch or read things that are woke - they're lazy. So they just watch the most popular things and demand that they be changed just for them by whining online.

Also, they don't have the talent to tell a compelling story especially when that's their secondary concern after trying to push their agenda, and when their efforts fail because they're not really creative, they just bitch about the bigots who were too sexist/racist/transphobic to handle their awesomeness. Equality means giving everyone a chance to be mediocre; it's why they're now pushing equity, which demands that you not acknowledge that mediocrity if it comes from an oppressed class.

I read the comic years ago.I don’t remember the whole story exactly but my interpretation of it is that women are not truly softer than men, and in the event that every man were to vanish, the many roles they play, both positive and negative, would be pretty immediately filled by women. I suppose I can see how that could be considered feminist but I agree with you, I wouldn’t describe it like that either.
The tv show so far is putting out that same idea, but is a lot more heavy handed. Which is ok but they had better not waste my time like they did with Preacher.

It's not really a deus ex machina because discussion of human cloning is present from the beginning of the story, and it takes years of research before they can make it work on a large scale. Even then, they don't restore the status quo--they just prevent the extinction of the (female) human species. The only male clones are a handful of Yoricks and a bunch of Capuchin monkeys. The politics of who gets cloned might have been interesting, but that wasn't the story. The main narrative ends when Yorick finally finds the love of his life (and she fucking dies), everything after that is just wrap up.

I think the word is "gendercidal." The morphogenetic field thing is strange. Dr. Mann says it's completely insane and I agree. And the theory's originator is a bit of a misandrist overcome with guilt about how he treated his daughter. But it's the closest thing to an answer they give. Cloning makes men superfluous, so nature no longer supports their existence.

Fuck me, this went broke quickly :story:

Who would have guessed that a marketing campaign centred solely around troon newspeak and SJW pandering would not work? Next you tell me making the protagonist an annoying whiny dipshit who barely had any agency or relevance in his own story and got set aside so we can watch random troons and their relationship drama did not appeal to wide audiences.
It's almost as if regular people watch stuff for entertainment, not for hamfisted political messages that they are told to support or be deemed Hitler if they don't.

All in all, what I can say is "Y: The last man"? More like "Y: even bother?"

But apparently even the trans brigade is happy that it's cancelled since, in their opinion, it brings about a "transwomen genocyde narrative", it's anti-science, anti-trans and spreads the idea that chromosomes=gender.
The presence of trans people pretty much shot this concept in the kneecaps. You can't market your trite bullshit as the newest chapter in the SJW bible, when the story centers around the idea of all men dying and you need to address whether troons count as their original gender or the gender they identify with.

Either you make the original gender/chromosomes count and you get a shitstorm or you go for the gender that a person identifies and the whole concept just kinda falls flat. Especially given that the presence of functional gonads going extinct is the key idea of the story and with "I identify as a rainbow-colored cactus that's bi-curious and non binary" heavily undermines the whole "last man on earth" thing.

And the best thing: Whatever they choose, someone's going to be mad and accuse the makers of a trannycide.
