1998 - 2002; What songs and artists from that era do you like??
Strictly pop:
Garbage - "I Think I'm Paranoid"
Madonna - "Frozen"
Wheatus - "Teenage Dirtbag"
Britney Spears - "Crazy"
Robbie Williams - "Rock DJ"
Natalia Lafourcade - "En El 2000"
Gorillaz - "Rock The House"
Toni Braxton - "Unbreak My Heart"
Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"
Sophie Ellis-Bextor - "Murder On The Dancefloor"
The Cardigans - "Erase/Rewind"
Pink - "Just Like A Pill"
Christina Aguilera - "Dirrty (Feat. Redman)"
Avril Lavigne - "Losing Grip"
The Calling - "Wherever You Will Go"

Pop insofar that it's mostly Rock's exploited fad genre of the day; Nu-Metal.
Sevendust - "Denial"
Marilyn Manson - "The Love Song"
Kittie - "Spit"
Eminem - "Under The Influence"
Snake River Conspiracy - "How Soon is Now?"
Creed - "What If"
Korn - "Blame"
KidneyThieves - "Pleasant"
Spineshank - "The Height Of Callousness"
Seether - "69 Tea"
Limp Bizkit - "Re-Arranged"
Powerman 5000 - "Bombshell"
Saliva - "Greater Than Less Than"
Kid Rock - "Bawitaba"
Disturbed - "Stupify"
Rob Zombie - "Living Dead Girl"
Dope - "Kimberly's Ghost"
P.O.D. - "Alive"
Trapt - "Made Of Glass"

Not pop, but one of my favorite songs at that time.
Caliban - "Forsaken Horizon"

Despite being mostly mediocre; it's no less mediocre than today's standards (And it was my fucking jam in high school so fight me), and I'd argue that half the people mentioned at least gave half a damn about the music they made rather than the fast-food iterations of today, where God forbid you take a year off from touring and songwriting in order to harness new ideas.
Nope; gotta make product for people to consoom.

I just want to say the late 90s ended culturally in 2001 after a certain incident involving planes and towers. Until that point the 90s were getting more upbeat and less grungey depressed. It was all American Pie and Austin Powers. Things developed to be a lot more cynical and dark shortly after (outside of Nu Metal that was already crawling in rusty meat and dog shit).

and that's one of the weaker songs on the album.

Yes and no, obviously a lot changed overnight but I don't think 90s culture fully went away instantly, 2002 was still a very 90s year, the last one in fact (I mean X-Files didn't end until that year, doesn't get any more 90s than X-Files)

You have to remember that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 people tried to have a very 90s optimism about it, an attitude of "a bad thing has happened but we're not going to let it bring us down", it wasn't until the Iraq war started and things fractured along left and right lines again, did 90s culture fully go away.

At the very least 2002 would have been rife with things that started production in 2001 or before, so there was definitely still some holdover.

The above are probably the best tracks that charted on the Hot 100. Fight me.

Probably shouldn't count since its from 97, but didn't chart in the US until 98. So idk.

I would go on try and replicate the lead singers look in highschool. Thank God I never got any tattoos. But pooka shells were my thing until I was like 17
I actually listened to that last week and it almost sounds better than most pop-rap out there.

Also to OP, I found that Blink-182’s Enema of the State album to be one of the most enjoyable albums I’ve ever listened to. I could never understand the hate around them.

This song in particular is great to me:

Nah nigger you got it wrong. That was a defining era of pop music. Without it, we'd still be listening to depressing grunge shit and wannabe gangsta rap. Because god forbid we get something upbeat and happy and carefree in our lives.

Only remember them as a one-hit wonder for some sappy ballad they did. Glad to see they have better.

Oof I did not care for her self-titled 3rd album era. Her first 2 albums were so good and then... things changed. Blame the plane crashes. Also, her sales massively declined because radio stations had some kinda embargo on playing her... something to do with her being the spokeswoman of Pepsi at the time, idk.

Most radio stations couldn't play her because she went with some other company for her concerts instead of Clear Channel, which owned like 70-90% of radio. I loved the third album too; it still had a lot of bubblegum/teen pop on it, but with more mature songs thrown it too. Her fourth album's my favorite though.

I remember not even being a teenager yet and thinking how old 23 was rocking this song. This album and the next three or so by them were classics. They pumped out a bunch of other side project each creating separate successful bands while still keeping Blink alive

Funny enough, music videos were amusing to watch during the late 90’s-early to mid-2000’s.
Now it seems that music video are forcing themselves to be creative and daring because TikTok is taking away most of their revenue.
i loved music videos even by musicians i didn't care about, it was just a cool medium at the time. A lot of the most famous music videos still hold up today and are super fun.

This is what comes to my head when i think of creative and daring for that time

I have a very good memory of dancing to this song with my cousin at my grandmother's house once.
