Despite being mostly mediocre; it's no less mediocre than today's standards (And it was my fucking jam in high school so fight me), and I'd argue that half the people mentioned at least gave half a damn about the music they made rather than the fast-food iterations of today, where God forbid you take a year off from touring and songwriting in order to harness new ideas.
Nope; gotta make product for people to consoom.

Yes and no, obviously a lot changed overnight but I don't think 90s culture fully went away instantly, 2002 was still a very 90s year, the last one in fact (I mean X-Files didn't end until that year, doesn't get any more 90s than X-Files)

You have to remember that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 people tried to have a very 90s optimism about it, an attitude of "a bad thing has happened but we're not going to let it bring us down", it wasn't until the Iraq war started and things fractured along left and right lines again, did 90s culture fully go away.

At the very least 2002 would have been rife with things that started production in 2001 or before, so there was definitely still some holdover.
 


The above are probably the best tracks that charted on the Hot 100. Fight me.

Probably shouldn't count since its from 97, but didn't chart in the US until 98. So idk.

I actually listened to that last week and it almost sounds better than most pop-rap out there.

Also to OP, I found that Blink-182’s Enema of the State album to be one of the most enjoyable albums I’ve ever listened to. I could never understand the hate around them.

Oof I did not care for her self-titled 3rd album era. Her first 2 albums were so good and then... things changed. Blame the plane crashes. Also, her sales massively declined because radio stations had some kinda embargo on playing her... something to do with her being the spokeswoman of Pepsi at the time, idk.

Most radio stations couldn't play her because she went with some other company for her concerts instead of Clear Channel, which owned like 70-90% of radio. I loved the third album too; it still had a lot of bubblegum/teen pop on it, but with more mature songs thrown it too. Her fourth album's my favorite though.

1999
I remember not even being a teenager yet and thinking how old 23 was rocking this song. This album and the next three or so by them were classics. They pumped out a bunch of other side project each creating separate successful bands while still keeping Blink alive

i loved music videos even by musicians i didn't care about, it was just a cool medium at the time. A lot of the most famous music videos still hold up today and are super fun.

This is what comes to my head when i think of creative and daring for that time
