YIIK: A Post Modern RPG / Ackk Studios / Andrew Allanson - "I wanted to make a game with a protagonist who was very unlikeable" - From Someone who is equally unlikeable. Currently developing Version I.V (1.5)

I’ll admit the cutscenes make things LOOK more interesting, but it’s essentially key jangling to make you not pay attention to what’s being said.

In an RPG.

Just because Alex and Sami/Semi are now apparently together on a karaoke stage when they first meet does not make their first meaning any more interesting or intriguing. It’s just makes me think “why the fuck are they randomly on a kareoke stage?”

It's because, according to dev himself, "we asked 70 people what they dislike about Alex monologue's and they all said it was boring so we made it non-boring by putting him in a standup stage where he'll change places randomly as he talks so it's more interesting to watch".

I mentioned in the quirky rpg thread but watching the streams, i fear the devs took the wrong lessons from the criticism they got.

They think everyone thought the alpaca scene was dumb so they made it edgy and serious and foreshadowing anc killed any original intent it had, except it's still dumb cause it's a talking alpaca.

They heard people whine about the combat being "slow and bad" and instead of making it good they put a completely different combat with extremely schizophrenic camera movements and eyebleeding colors. It also has NO LOADING TIMES which i admit is genuinely impressive and worth praising.

They heard people kept falling mashing and not caring during the conversation so now they animated everything with important details meaning you can get a completely separate thing to pay attenttion (Rory talks about himself while the camera shows Michael petting the cat and looking at a camera soul survivor) or its even slower since you can't press at your own pace.

They heard Michael did nothing so now he (seemingly) has his own plotline going inside his head where he explicitly says he's "going proto".

The last trailer implying Alex parents were potentially abusive could be seen as the devs trying to make Alex less hateable (we have to see on practice).

The faster combat already makes the update unlikely to make the game worse but i feel the core yiik issues (>alex, too much dialogue, bad writing, nonsensical story etc) are still there will be mocked harder due to the greater effort they put.

This is incredible. So not only is it still boring, it's now boring and stupid.

That all sounds like a headache to deal with while playing a game.

I’m also starting to wonder if the developers are just that stupid or just that spiteful that no one liked how it was originally. “Oh, you think Alex’s speeches are boring? We’ll know he warps all around and wears a clown outfit while bouncing in his head. There, so how stupid and wrong your opinions are? Clearly I did it right the first time!”

Other than it's story and writing(which in the 1.0 release was at least so bad you could laugh at it), the combat is the real issue. RPGs live or die by their gameplay elements, otherwise there is no reason to get invested into the world or the story unless they're really good(which this isn't). 1.0 release was VERY grindy, combat slowed down to a halt in sections where enemies abruptly leveled up(Oney playthru had several episodes which was nothing but grinding and combat), and the characters themselves don't actually fulfill any traditional or useful roles(Rory is literally a human shield, why ever take him when you can have a companion who can tank hits AND fight back?). Then, you got LP Toss that quite literally breaks the game, making everything trivially easy(Oney playthru had them kill every single final boss in one hit). It doesn't help that actual leveling up process was an absolute slog in the original iteration of the Mind Dungeon.

I think with a little bit of rebalancing, it could do wonders for the game. I wish they would stop tinkering with the story, it's clear they don't understand why some people are obsessed with it and want to make it boring. I wish the game had mod support, that way you could have the community "fix" the game for you and that would be that. No matter what they do with the characters, I think everybody already has an idea who they are anyways(Alex YIIK being a sex offender like in the Running Shine video, for example).
Why some people still talk about the game, I think, is because it had some real potential. For better or worse, this isn't your generic indie slop, the game is like a trainwreck you cannot look away from. Thing is, if you changed a few story elements and fixed others(either giving Chandra/Weeb guy more time or removing them altogether, for example) you would have a good game, so there is clearly potential here. I agree with others who say this is a textbook case of how NOT to make a game, and I think this fascinates some people. With your average AAA slop you know the game was never going to be good and was only made to make a profit, but YIIK here had actual soul and effort put into it, it just didn't quite work out.

I think the best thing the devs can do at this point is to release a 1.0 version that everybody wants to play and just remaster the original, make a Director's Cut if you will. Me, I'm more interested in the beta stuff, the game from that period of time looked much better. Enough time has passed that I don't think anyone would mind this. Hell, release that Two Brothers game again as long as your remove the copyrighted content, you might get a few pity shekels from people curious what the whole deal was about.

Two Brothers had more issues than just copyright music. It was also incredibly wordy despite being a GB-like game, there’s all kinds of major spelling errors, and the game was so buggy that there are numerous soft and hard locks, including to the save system so in multiple cases the only way to fix anything would be to delete the save file and start from scratch.

So does the game actually have undiscovered hidden endings or is that just cope from fags?
Just 4 endings
Standard ending where all but one Alex die
Alternative ending with Alex and Samy together
Cut original happy ending Essentia and Alex beat proto Alex
Youtube, not in the game files ending, Alex travels in time and fixes everything before anything bad happens and gets the groceries for Mom
I imagine the new update will add at least 1 more ending

And @Vida explained it a lot more clearly than it is in the actual game.

It sort of had value as a golden alpaca that was just random and weird, like a Tonberry sort of. Turning it into One-Winged-Angel Sephiroth but in alpaca form was just insane. I'm glad all the video essayists recorded it in the original form so people can still see it.

HOLY SHIT IT JUST CAME OUT
I grabbed it since it's free, not sure if I could find a time to play this tho
I can't believe this is a separate item on Steam for a single player game, they're really finding new ways to use the platform. I can't think of anybody releasing a demo years after the game, lol. Also can't believe the description puts a heavy reference to Two Brothers, the other game that didn't float from them.

They did a similar thing back in 2018, before the game first came out, with the Cape Juno demo.
A completly new are, not found in the game, with a unique story and characters, that would later be repurpose as the final boss.

The reference to Two brothers may be a hint at the Chromophore remaking of the game

I have finished the demo and watched the full credits

I'm gonna sperg now

The game starts very weird, with one of the new female characters, falling into a void and going in a weird dream. You control her around and she says she has amnesia but she also mentions a "bad brother" that pushed her down, one living a house written Egglston (Alex) and she calls Rory "good brother" when she sees him but then he disappears.

The girl needs a "name" to progress then you move around until someone gives her the name Carrie (rory's sister), but later on she trades the name an invite to "the party" where you get it from who looks like the original proto alex. That's also a weird thing, the game really pushes Proto Alex everywhere, with the caped "krow" clearly looking like him too. We somehow end up in the name up thing

1712273375040.png
(Fun fact, william is the name of character in a yiik sidenovel. I wonder if this means anything...)

1712271315064.jpeg (these moving vfx are real nice actually)

After naming ourselseves and ONLY ourselves, we start the intro that you can find on youtube. The notable thing about the intro related to the demo i'll mention is that the girl is clearly named Allison in it.

1712271004347.png

And she's with a younger michael.

1712271032404.png

After michale takes a picture of Allison, she turns into a red iron maiden that is what takes our party members when we die. This makes me take the very obvious guess that, yes, Allison is Michael's dead(?) girlfriend. This is very much implied at the end of the demo which i'll spoil anyway since it's so early.

1712271538119.jpeg1712271552475.jpeg1712271565200.jpeg

This makes me think Michael will be a big focus on the new content and how he apparently made a deal with the fucking devil to create ONISM in the hopes of finding his girlfriend that "disappeared" (i'll guess she fell and died somewhere). Michal also talks in a much more serious and brooding way here.

Either way her being called Carrie at the epilogue makes me think she's some sorte of alternate version of Rory's sister somehow (i know this makes no sense but it's yiik).

1712273281365.png
(what does that gun mean???)

The other new content is hard to explain because it's mostly the Krow and proto Alex splastered everywhere with no context in what feels like a very shitty forced attempt of foreshadowing. One thing i noticed tho is that there is LOT of focus on this exact room in particular, as it appears in the epilogue, intro and now in the dungeon.

1712272018592.jpeg

Alex is shown waking up at this room and taking the bus, but also proto slept here and Panda is found here so i assume this is actually Alex room back in college. This makes me theorize that Alex's college days will be expanded, or the reveal proto-alex was his room mate or something.

Another new character shown is Jocasta who talks in sexy innuendos and tutorials you about cards. She says you need to give your blood to play and alex, seemingly fully hipnotized, does it, which probably matches with the whole BLEED hyperfocus in combat but i dont get the symbolism yet.

1712272235703.jpeg

This scene is decent but it feels like an accident because Alex doesnt say SHIT here and i know it's only because his VA wasnt called to re-record any new lines AFAIK. When you meet the wilheim boss Alex gets hipnotized again and doesnt mention the Krow that appeared out of nowhere holding a baby

1712272415366.jpeg
(this makes just as much sense in context)

Also, i'll say that Alex monologues are just as bad but feel more convincing now. Like, he will look at Sami and THEN look away when monologuing which gives a better idea of how he's not fucking listening at all.

1712272566462.jpeg
1712272580387.jpeg

I know everyone bashes this dialogue but i think it's underrated in how it subtly showcases how self centered Alex is on practice. Note how Alex finds out the Cat is a girl and proceeds to call it HE again because he already forgot.

1712272591358.jpeg

Another is how Alex will project on Sami, like saying she's projecting on the cat after he did a full monologue thinking about petting the cat.

Ironically, MY issue is that Alex never acts this subtle of an unreliable narrator again.

And now the elephant in the room...

>THE COMBAT

GOOD: It's not as vomit inducing as it looks on practice. This is a normal timeline based rpg except everyone has 3 card slots and you MP regenerates overtime and as you attack or block. These cards you equip have 1 passive effect (stat boost + passive) and can be consumed in battle for active effects, but they also have their own HP and they function as "meat shields" that absorb damage. If you get hit with no cards you start to bleed and die very fast, but enemies also work like this.

There is potential here. Alex LP toss for example changed to a spell that hits all enemy cards so its better in certain scenarios. Do i consume this card early on for a debuff or keep it to preserve hp or do i wait until it's almost broken to use it? There is a convincing attempt at risk reward. It's also fast with no loading screen, overall an improvement.

BAD: This potential isnt developed at all in the demo where Alex and Sami get 1 literal meat shield card (cow and heart). Losing your big stats and passive shit when card broken feels bad and bleeding is a death sentence that forces you to either finish off the enemy NOW or use bandages. I died two times to the boss because i attempted healing through bleeding and it's simply not worth it, you die too fast. You're supposed to use Panda to tank the boss before it bleeds you and watch it slowly bleed to death but that's not fun.

Thankfully they give you the option to retry with bonus items but one of them, the gauze bandage, is broken because it stops bleeding AND gives you 3 band-aid cards with 1 hp each. There is no overkill damage so the boss has to break each band-aid one by one effectively giving you 3 turns of immortality. There seems to be piercing attacks that deal hp damage directly but the boss has none so it was trivia.

I understand it would be frustrating if you healed bleed only to get smacked into bleed again but there has to be a better idea here lol. They should've added a tutorial explaining Panda can be used in battle cause the boss is unwinable without panda or gauzes.

TL;DR: Combat is fast so that's good. The story will probably across even more pretentions and convoluted than before tho.

I always found his connection with Dick Masterson odd considering the game often tried to pander to people leaning left, coincidentally i saw a video today saying that one of the "cut" endings of yiik would have you getting redpilled by Dick (yiik section starts at 11:38):
I wonder if that yiik fanboy acknowledged this.
Bit late to respond, but I do remember RunningShine’s video saying it feels more like they’re making fun of left leaning people.

They could honestly just be that bad at writing and too obsessed with being post modern and artsy or whatever. The whole “is just too deep for you” crap.

People are way more optimistic about this update than I am. Maybe I just never had a good opinion on the guys that made it, I dunno. At least they improved the combat.

Not really a spoiler since the new Michael scene was one of the first things they showed.
Since the girl started the game by falling and losing her name, Rory's sister commited suicide by jumping from the overpass and the intro implies that Allison fell to her death while posing it's clear that they all are the same person, soul
Either way her being called Carrie at the epilogue makes me think she's some sorte of alternate version of Rory's sister somehow (i know this makes no sense but it's yiik).
In the livestreams the devs showed the new meeting Rory cutscene, it made it obvious that Michael knew Rory's sister

He appeared on the livestreams reading some stuff. Not really sure how many new lines he recorded

Was it the final fight of the demo? Did you happen to say yes or no to helping Sami out? I said no and had a really tough fight. I played with a friend who selected yes and they had Krow help them for the fight and he had abilities to damage all enemy cards while healing the parties cards, and had an easy time.
