Having played the demo, I'll say that giving thid game a more surreal nature def works (kinda gave me this odd Killer is Dead/Killer 7/Persona 5/Deadly Premonition vibe), the combat isnt a huge chore, but the dialogue..fuuuuck me. Like, some of it isnt bad, but the original stuff, combined with the cutscenes is just groan inducing.

Is the buggy, 20 hours long mess that was the original version of Yiik better or worse than GVH?

Hm, no its def not worse than GVH and it doesnt feel as buggy. Like, the combat goes much faster and theres def need to use strategy. Id say, whats gonna plague this game is the original dialogue, which they try to play around. Like when Alex narrates, he's suddenly sitting in a karaoke bar talking into a mic

I was able to finish original Yiik, but never managed to get past GVH's roleplay section, I used to hope the latter wouldn't come out as bad as the former, but as time went on I began feeling car crash fascination toward Yiik but apathy at best when it comes to GVH.
I think it's admirable what the borthers did, instead of giving back and after calming down, they stood up, proclaimed that they heard no bell and went back to unfuck the game, no matter the cost and effort.

All this talk makes me hope the game will be, of course not good, but entertainingly bad.
I believe it's gonna be entertaining no matter if good and bad, I have hopes for the writing and story to be better than original but even without that the Allansons have gone far enough to earn the respect of the players, something ko_ope will never understand.

Not really a spoiler since the new Michael scene was one of the first things they showed.

No, this isnt that cutscene revealed over a year ago, that one Michael stares at a picture of Alex, talks about going proto and drinks with a revolver nearby implying he's suicidal, there is nothing like that in the demo cutscene and the dialogue is completely different, it was either fully changed (over feedback?) or those are two different cutscenes now.

Was it the final fight of the demo? Did you happen to say yes or no to helping Sami out? I said no and had a really tough fight. I played with a friend who selected yes and they had Krow help them for the fight and he had abilities to damage all enemy cards while healing the parties cards, and had an easy time.

Yeah i said no and wow what a bizarre way to handle this, because if Krow doesnt help he has no reason to join Alex against the boss in the cutscene, it makes no sense.

I never understood why people talk about this game what gives?

The game is so interesting to talk about because it's a rare example of a high effort passion project that manages to botch everything it attempted.

Andrew is the dev but also the composer and made a rather large soundtrack full of different and experimental songs, except most of them are awful to the point one was removed cause everyone hated it, with the most listened song on youtube being Toby fox guest track.

The game's main story is fully voice acted which is genuinely impressive for for an indie game with this much dialogue, except half of the dialogue is Alex talking to himself and nothing characters.

The premise is genuinely interesting and surreal rpgs are trendy while modern day non-fantasy rpgs are super rare so this had a lot of potential the plot kills itself after act 2.

The combat has unique minigames made for each character skill which sounds amazing except they're the opposite of fun and combat is the WORST part of the game by huge margin .

The devs spend +4 years pushing their game on conventions and PAX only to release to unanimously critical panning and then spend +4 years trying to fix the game.

There are so many questionable decisions that people will do 3 hour video essays wondering if the devs are pretentious, stupid, insane or actually evil.

It's like a racer builds a very fast car, then proceeds to drive in a straight line at 300 km/h and crash into a concrete wall, desintegrating itself into perfect nothing. Yeah the death is pretty bad but you're more concerned what hell the driver was trying to accomplish there.

Maybe they named their studio as a tribute to the way Dick Masterson sounds when he laughs.

~~~~~~~~
I’m starting to notice there a lot of focus on ”sisters” in this game, especially with the added content.
Also, now that it’s 2024, I wonder if Twitter will go after them for not having a black person voice the hula hoop girl.
Fo Twitter to go after them, it's implied someone would actually give a shit for this game and ya know...not see it as a huge flop made by two pompous hacks.
Someone already mentioned the connection with rory's sister, but there's also the connection with Alex's sister, who is mentioned once or twice in flavor text, then an NPC says "btw alex werent you an only child?" Which could mean she was a lie from Alex or that she was from another reality, which would further cement Alex as "the bad brother" and would actually use a plot thread that didn't really get explored in the original.
Also i highly doubt they will give them shit for Chondra's VA since even to she isn't black, she's also not white, so the role segregation doesn't apply to her.
It helps that YIIKES is unique, where as KO-PE are hacks that stole 4chan's rightful clay and sold it for money on Steam. Of course the imitation is going to feel cheap and worthless.
Finished the demo and I agree with almost everything @LucasSomething said about the game. As I've said multiple times in this thread, I appreciate the effort put into improving the game after 5 years, but there are still issues to be had.
An issue with the gameplay would be the fact that the healing items heal based on percentage as opposed to a flat health rate. While this is fine for the latter end of content, but for now, the bulk of the healing items you get during the course of the demo heal 1-3 HP which are just fucking useless. It's better use of your resources to just thug an encounter out and then just walk to one of the multiple healing fountains that are littered around the map.
As LucasSomething mentioned, the battle system is leagues above the shitty battle system in the original, where fights either took 10 minutes because attacks barely did any fucking damage, or 2 seconds because you just used the Alex LP exploit (I did not know about this during my playthrough in 2019). I'm still not the biggest fan of the new battle system (mainly because they didn't give us enough tools to play with for MOST of the demo, just one card for each party member until the boss). I get what they're doing with the Karta system, where you can sacrifice stats in order to give your party a boost or a heal like with Sami's or to do some AOE damage like Alex's but until I see more of it (if I decide to play the game when it releases proper) I'll just say it's underdeveloped and could use some worth.
I fucking hate the bleed mechanic.
The bleed mechanic is simply unfun and unsatisfying to play with. 90% of encounters end up with the enemy just bleeding out randomly while nothing is happening with you saying "oh shit it died?". You also don't do any TRUE damage until you break all of the enemy's Kartas. It's like in Octopath Traveler but if you couldn't do any damage until the enemy breaks, it's just not very fun. If they just kept the Karta system (which I think is okay) but got rid of the bleed system and made it so you don't have to lose your Kartas in order to take true damage, the battle system would be immediately better. I think it's clumsily added but I will take it every single day over the original battle system. I will give them kudos for making the robot boss at the end have a robot vampire, its a neat detail.
I won't really go into the story stuff because I'm waiting until the game finishes proper to tear this story a new ass. It's pretentious, which is something everyone has known about the plot of YIIK for half a decade. I like the presentation but the Jocasta scenes were fucking cringe because the models don't lend themselves to being sexy whatsoever. I was dying during the ass shot they tried to do for her. The models look uncanny and butt ugly 99% of the time and while you could argue that "that's the point"; I feel like there needs to be a separation between the weird shit the game has right now and some form of normalcy to make the weird shit pop out more, but I'm getting real nitpicky now. The models and cutscenes also just feel unfinished, with some scenes having animated lip syncing and others being just stills with really no reason to distinguish between the two. I know it's a demo, but after half a decade, I'd hope they'd at least have figured something out by now. Overall, the presentation is still a major step up from the original game, but that isn't saying much.
The UI is way better now, the spacing isn't complete shit and menuing is way better from the little I had to do in the demo.
I never understood why people talk about this game what gives?
I can't speak for everyone but it's stuck in my mind because it's such an interesting mess to pick apart.
There's tons of strange little details and choices that have remarkable context behind them once you take a more thorough look.
I watched someone play it live and laughed my ass off at what a horrid spectacle it was from beginning to end.
Later I felt a strange sense of mourning when I found out that literally no-one was defending it.
I genuinely believe that if this exact game was released 5 years earlier - it would've been an indie darling. The Allisons were right there in the indie circle jerk and to see them cast from it was pretty surprising. It was *really* that bad.
Truly, the real enemy of good is "Unmemorable". "Unremarkable". "Boring".
YIIK is an awful awful game and yet I've placed more mindshare to it than many more deserving games.
I dont think this is nitpicky, it's the most common (honest and not ironic) criticism i've seen.
And some reviews i found. The demo is actually 95% positive with +300 reviews but it's free so a chunk of them are shitposts.
I didnt play the original at the time to get the idea but in comparison the demo makes the first hour waaay more bloated.
Now you START with a long Alisson/carrie dream sequence, You finally move alex for a bit and you get A SECOND dreamy cutscene with Jocasta and a tutorial. You enter the dungeon and now there a NEW dream sequence with windows and protalex.. A room were changed to be even MORE dreamlike and panda room changed to not match the dungeon. Then you meet Sami and she joins Alex inside the stage making it look like a dream inside a dream. You then get a another new dream cutscene where Alex touches a throne then connects the cables with the spiritual or something. Then you get a krow jumping in the tv to join you while holding a baby because... reasons...
Compare this
Like, what is even real at this point? This feels like Andrew started "adding more content" and had no one to hold him back. It doesnt look like Alex entered an abandoned building with supernatural shit, it looks like he is high the entire demo.
Are we going to explore the sewers and every other room we'll get a trippy lsd room while the golden Alpaca stares at us from the background? Because foreshadowing i guess?
Oh my fucking god I have to talk about the music. Most of it was fine but this ONE track that plays during the battle tutorial was so genuinely awful it almost stopped me from finishing the demo. The worst part is that the tutorial went on for a good 5 minutes so I had to hear this song at least 3-5 times. It sounds like a shitty Digibro album. As for using the main theme right away, it's a toss up between having it as a placeholder and general incompetence. I'm leaning towards general incompetence.
I feel like most people wouldn't have a problem with the sheer volume of weird experimental shit if there was a theme or some baseline of cohesion to them. For most of these rooms its like he spun a wheel of WACKY IDEAS, picked one, and just rolled with it. People like weird and experimental shit, but people also like knowing what the fuck is going on.
Yeah I agree that the demo is severely bloated. There really isn't any breathing room whatsoever and I feel like if they trimmed the fat a bit and restructured the order of events so it isn't just the new shit tacked on to the old shit, it'd make for a better product.
This sounds like a parody track made to mock the game, holy shit
Yep, that's our ACK! studios! Tripping over themselves at the first hurdle and pissing themselves while they're at it. This will be some people's first impressions since this plays during the tutorial.
To be honest, I don't hate it.
I mean it's not good, but I do find it relaxing and quite fitting for a tutorial, as well as with the battle ambience and also it reminds me a little of the tutorial song from Omori.
I tell you what I think is the issue with it, the vocals and it's lyrics, they are quite bad and poorly melts in the background of the soundtrack like Andrew probably wanted, it may be partially fixed with better mixing and cutting down some of said vocals.
Sorry for double posting but I just finished the demo.
It's surely is an experience, new animations replacing the old static pictures are a big welcome, though a couple of those are still present and I hope they get patched out; Allansons decided on doubling down the insanity instead of tone themselves down, which is admirable but may end up in a disaster; the revamped combat is good but feels like it needs a couple of tweaks and Alex monologues now feels a lot more like the guy is a pretentious prick as he's potrayed like a cabaret comedian that is simply just as lame and unfunny as brian griffin.
If I were them, I would find a way to rewrite the letter so that Alex's mom doesn't sounds like a massive dick just like her son (unless that was intended).
New songs aren't that bad, but neither dogshit; like the one I pointed out above, it wouldn't take that much to adjust them.
So... I guess I'll side with the positive reviews for now, but may change my mind later; could still use a few corrections in and there and the finished product is surely gonna be a fever dream.
