YIIK: A Post Modern RPG / Ackk Studios / Andrew Allanson - "I wanted to make a game with a protagonist who was very unlikeable" - From Someone who is equally unlikeable. Currently developing Version I.V (1.5)

The funniest part about YIIK ripping everything off is this option in the main menu

All these homages guys, don't sue us
I'm curious now because I never noticed it. What is the "homage" to Lost Odyssey? If they did something like "homage" any of the short stories from it that might actually make me think they're even more dumb than previously thought. Especially if it's a "homage" to Hannas Departure that would be particularly dumb.

I kinda want someone to pull a Spec Ops: The Line with this annoying trend of Earthbound circle jerking. Make a game and market it as just another Earthbound wannabe, but have it be something completely different than what you would expect based on the cover and marketing.

Glad to see a thread on this.
There were little bits in the vanilla experience that were intriguing, regarding the relationships between the characters. Unfortunately most of the interactions went nowhere. For example, Alex's search got Claudio's interest due to him losing his brother long ago. Chondra takes him aside and basically tells him off for disrupting Claudio's stable life, upset that he's once again on an obsessive wild goose chase. It's an interesting setup for interesting character moments, but it's dropped immediately.

If this game's story had more focus on the character dynamics, it would have played out very well. This game feels like a high-art draft that didn't get properly cup checked in the editing room.

I guess that's why YIIK stays in my head. It's got so many interesting bits, despite ultimately being a failure.

Wasted potential you mean?

Also i keep seein anons on 4c making threads about this game?
Another question is, is it worth playing?

Playing the game in its original cut is interesting, I would say. I bought it to experience the game a bit more intimately, since the reviews had my attention. It's definitely the wasted potential that drew my attention.

It's worth playing if your interested in personally digging into and experiencing the little oddities of this game. Otherwise, I would suggest just watching a playthrough and spending your money on an RPG that you will be more likely to actually enjoy.

Several screenshots leaked today regarding the upcoming changes. I'm kind of impressed that Andrew and his crew are still trying to make the game better. He's still a weirdo, but he's a hard working one. New characters, new endings, new music and more things are also being added. This game's a fascinating trainwreck and I'm curious as to where it'll go.

For how much I hated playing this game, I respect Andrew Allanson for putting in the effort to improve this game despite getting shat on by every corner of the Internet.

Same. It was a weird, frustrating game. I'm amazed he's kept at it though. Who knows? Maybe the new update will make it genuinely good.

I'll say that I think a good chunk of the music is actually really solid at least though.

@Pizdec not sure why this thread wasn't moved out sooner but I'm going to take it you'd like this in Lolcows under Careercow?

Was thinking the gaming board. The milk isn't consistent enough, but if the Allansons lose it after their game gets shat on again then it might be lolcow-worthy.

It does interest me how the reaction is gonna be; Could be no one cares by the time the update comes out, could be that everyone does not give it any chance, or the fun one where everyone yiiks the fuck out over how weird the new stuff is

The game is a magnificent dumpster fire and feels like an interactive lolcow petting zoo, but god I can't justify investing time or money into it.

The amazing thing is that on the surface their games look pretty decent, they catch the eye enough to not be dismissed immediately. It's like they against all odds and logic managed to craft a believable videogame out of papier maché, filled it with dreck and somehow it can be installed on peoples computers.

Nobody would care about the plagiarism if YIIK was a good game, but it wasn't a good game and plenty of people don't have respect for Allanson as a writer and creator (understandable, justifiable) so people did care.

I tire of reading people pretend they really care about one-off cut-and-pastes from some books they probably never heard of until YIIK (and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary), as if they're all college professors grading Andrew Allanson. It's not as if he Xerox'd a story beat or an entire plotline.
