You can't tell the truth about the Holocaust in Poland. Could that happen in the US?

Cautionary examples loom in other countries, especially Poland where it is now against the law for its citizens to speak the truth about Poles' complicity in the Holocaust.

In the name of protecting young minds, book bans have swept an unprecedented number of titles off shelves in U.S. schools and spurred legislation in multiple states to bar teaching anything that could cause a student to feel “guilt, anguish or other forms of psychological distress for actions … committed in the past.”

On the other end of the political spectrum, a national survey of roughly 1,500 faculty members at four-year colleges and universities found that 72% of conservative faculty said they fear being fired if someone misunderstands their words.

These actions raise the questions: Who gets to define objectionable content, and where is this all heading? Will it result in a single permissible curriculum or a mandated version of U.S. history that librarians, teachers and professors must adhere to or risk discipline or dismissal? Will the chilling effect on publishers over the long term curtail circulation and reprints of banned books?

It's against the law to tell the truth about the Holocaust in Poland

Cautionary examples loom in other countries, especially Poland where it is now against the law for its citizens to speak the truth about Poles’ complicity in the Holocaust.

In the 1980s, the trade union Solidarity and the Catholic Church brought down Soviet communism, and Poland developed a bustling market economy and built pillars of democracy allowing free expression. Poles were finally able to take a fresh look at their own history after decades of communist-controlled textbooks and monuments that described everyone killed in World War II as victims of fascism, denying the Holocaust.

Generations grew up not knowing that Jews had ever lived in their communities or that German Nazis had targeted them for systematic, industrial genocide, along with other minorities.

During that quarter-century of openness, journalists and academics accessed archives of records and testimony, producing a significant body of research that suggests that while thousands of Poles risked their lives to help Jews, thousands also participated in the Holocaust. These findings have been very difficult if not impossible for many Poles to accept.

In 2015, the right-wing Law and Justice Party came to power, channeling desires for national pride and heroes. Three years later, the government implemented a law steeped in grievance over how Poland’s World War II history is described. The 2018 memory law forbids any expression describing complicity by Poland in the Holocaust.

That same year a massive study of such incidents was published in Poland, edited by Polish Canadian professor Jan Grabowski and Polish academic Barbara Engelking. The two volume, 1,640-page study detailed many wartime incidents of Polish Jews who died as a result of their countrymen betraying them to the Nazis or of Poles committing the murders themselves.

A government-backed organization sued the editors for libel, and a judge in Warsaw ruled against them in 2021. In a 37-page verdict, Judge Ewa Jonczyk said there was no issue with the truth of the passage of the book regarding whether a long dead mayor of a small town had taken actions that resulted in the deaths of Jews in hiding.

But she ruled that the editors nonetheless violated the right to a positive identity held by the niece of the late mayor, which put the right to national pride on a par with other basic legal rights.

What was written “can be construed as hurtful and striking at the feeling of identity and of national pride.” She went on to say that such accusations risk striking “against the feeling of national belonging and provokes a feeling of harm.”

An appeals court overruled the verdict by the Warsaw judge, but history remains a political battlefield. The government is now cutting funding for historians’ research it disagrees with. Classroom teachers worry about running afoul of the government’s allowed narrative of World War II history.

Governments use 'memory laws' to control how history is discussed

Memory laws, government actions that assert a mandatory view of historical events, are nothing new. West Germany criminalized Holocaust denial in the mid-1980s. Turkey made it a crime to insult "Turkishness" in 2005.

Frequently, such laws are used by totalitarian regimes such as Russia for self-purposes.

The United States does not seem removed from the politicization of memory. The final report released in 2021 of the President’s Advisory 1776 Commission called for a “patriotic education” and supported Donald Trump’s call for a new pro-American curriculum.

The report drew sharp criticism from historians. But pitched battles over book bans and acceptable historical narratives taught in schools and universities still rage.

Looking at Europe’s examples should be instructive. The land of the free and the home of the brave should make room for the truth to be told in the classroom and in the town square.

Judy Rakowsky is the author of “Jews in the Garden.”

Oy vey don't you dare question the size and scale of the Shoah, don't you dare talk about other German massacres of the mid-20th century either!

I thought the Poles were also victims of Nazi oppression and that the Nazis literally wiped Warsaw off the face of the map after the uprising. Little did I know Jan Scybyzcicz walked hand in hand with Hans Gruber in the Shoah.

This, I think, is why the Holocaust is drawing less and less care and sympathy and more and more questioning from newer generations in spite of all historical evidence and reason. The attitude that it was the Jews and the Jews alone that suffered at the hands of the Third Reich and the subsequent efforts to paint everyone else as either less important victims or people who were complicit. Doesn't help that it's more than likely these efforts to tell the "full historical truth" are probably the first part of barely veiled efforts to start demanding reparations from Poland and other Eastern European countries now that Germany proper has been wrung dry.

It's easy to demand that Poles be courageous and defy the Nahzees a hundred years after the fact. Those professors aren't staring down the barrel of an MP-40.
or of Poles committing the murders themselves.
So? I could also ask about the several thousand Jews who fought for the Wehrmacht. Some of them were even awarded the Iron Cross.

Erhard Milch was half-Jewish, yet not only did he actively seek membership in the Nazi party, he was considered valuable enough to be given the second most important position in the Luftwaffe after Herman Goering. Likewise Emile Maurice was half-Jewish, but he was nonetheless one of the earliest members of the SS, and was Hitler's close friend and personal chauffeur for years.

And of course let's not forget that George Soros, progressive non-profit fundraiser and hero to the left, first earned his money as a capo selling out his community for some dirty Nazi gold - but if you point this out, you're considered an anti-Semite.

And there was Werner Goldberg, once advertised as the "Ideal German Soldier".

If we're gonna advocate for a full and robust historical education; let's talk about the Revolution of 1918. No, not the one in Russia, the one in Germany, that was organized and led by Jews. Everyone wants wrong-thinkers to wear a permanent scarlet letter and not be allowed to partake in society; and yet we're told when it happened to "God's Chosen," it was wrong, and horrible, and definitely evil.

I'm also tired of jews putting their filthy fucking fingers into any nation trying to do its own thing. Poland can't talk about this, Germany can't deny this, Iceland can't stop circumcision because they get threatened by a rabbi calling a sitting US Congressman. And the US Congress passes a law making it illegal to criticize Israel as a nation or its people... Yet no one can understand why they hate the jews or why people may think they exercise untold influence.

We KNOW FOR SURE exactly 6 million Jews died, and also some mysterious, impossible to determine, additional several million non-Jews.

Funny how that works.

We sure don't want the poles stealing any of our victim shekels!

This aspect of holocaust discussion is pretty obscene.

Jewish and polish & Slavic ethnonationalists fighting for victim hood points. Slavs cannot acknowledge that eastern Europe was so antisemitic that many supported the Holocaust and Jewish extremists cannot acknowledge that millions of others were murdered for their identities.

To add to the lunacy, Israeli lawmakers continue to demand Polish gibsmedats because the post-war commie state used some law that any property with no living heirs went to the state, meaning that families of Jews that either died or fucked off to anywhere else were not present to claim them.

There's also this (archive)
Five million is frequently cited as the number of non-Jews killed by the Nazis. The figure is inaccurate and was apparently an invention of famed Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal. According to historian Deborah Lipstadt, he began to refer to “eleven million victims” of the Holocaust, six million Jews and five million non-Jews in the 1970s. Wiesenthal later admitted making up the figure to promote interest in the Holocaust among non-Jews. Lipstadt, says “he chose five million because it was almost, but not quite, as large as six million.”
Israel also didn't really recognize the Armenian Holocaust (archive) even though their is more proof for the 1.5 million number than 6 million. The more you learn about the Jews the more you realize anti-semitism was prominent for a reason

So, similar laws to most other countries?

Nothing peaked me harder on the rats than stunts like this.

They literally go out of their way to minimize the war crimes of the nazis, just so it can be all about them. They could over double the death toll if they included the goym, but that would minimize the grift. And after all, 1 goy life <<<<<< 1 choosen's life by their own admission. Just further proof of how much they hate you, and how much more you should hate them.

Hopefully number 110 comes within my lifetime.

Funny you mention that. Harry Truman, who helped found the state of Israel, privately felt the same way.
"The Jews, I find are very, very selfish. They care not how many Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Poles, Yugoslavs or Greeks get murdered or mistreated as D[isplaced] P[ersons] as long as the Jews get special treatment. Yet when they have power, physical, financial or political neither Hitler nor Stalin has anything on them for cruelty or mistreatment to the underdog. Put an underdog on top and it makes no difference whether his name is Russian, Jewish, Negro, Management, Labor, Mormon, Baptist he goes haywire. I've found very, very few who remember their past condition when prosperity comes."

12 million russian civilians were starved, shot, and raped by the Nazis. The greeks and dutch were intentionally starved so they could steal their food supplies. Catholics were persecuted en masse alongside Orthodox Priests too so the new Positive Christian heresy could be pushed. But I guess that doesn't matter. Only one race's sufferings matter, and it ain't goyim.

I have zero pity for the jews on this issue. They collectivly supported government mandated truth as long as it served them and their victim complex. Now that it does not, they are up in arms. By the way it's completely irrelevant that the Holocaust obviously happened, because once you set the precedent that the government, through law, can decide what is true about an issue, they can do that about every other issue as well. And suddenly they don't like it anymore.
