You know coffee doesn't have to taste like shit? - Black coffee discussion

As much as I like milk in my coffee, I don't like that it cools down the coffee significantly from being mixed in straight out of the fridge. My workaround is either keeping the milk out so it's closer to room temperature or heat it up with my roommate's milk frother. I tend to just drink it black if I'm in a rush but not quite awake yet. It's usually a dark roast anyway.

Mixing coffee does make sense though. If you want to enjoy the taste of coffee a lot, as in, for a lot of time, it might be better to just have the taste diluted than to drink too much pure coffee. Being zonked on way too much caffeine is hellish, it's like temporarily putting yourself into a state of truly autistic, heightened ADHD.

I usually drink straight black coffee with no cream or sugar and I love it. A nice breakfast blend or dark roast really hits the spot, and the smell alone wakes me up in the morning.

That said, there is terrible straight black coffee out there (Starbucks, I'm looking at you).

I in fact stand curious. I never knew exactly what to think of Starbucks. Is it any good, or is it overpriced and overhyped compared to what it brings? Is it outright bad?

Definitely overpriced, and is only drinkable if you add a shit ton of cream, sugar, milk, and all sorts of stuff. And at that point, it stops being coffee and just becomes a dessert.

And the base unaltered coffee is so bitter, it feels like they burned the beans or something. I don't know what they do to it, but its awful.

I've literally had coffee out of vending machines for a buck that were way better.

Thanks, you saved me an embarrassment and lots of money. Keep on with the good coffee!

I usually drink my coffee black, sometimes I like a little milk but that's it. Any brand is good, really no preference as long as it's reasonably priced.

Bear in mind I only like my coffee room temperature and always add water to it to cool it down/dilute it so my opinions may be iconoclastic when it comes to what tastes good.

Since we're talking about coffee I can sperg out fully. I enjoy pour overs, French press, and espresso (but i'm very picky about the espresso). Black all the way, soon i'll be roasting my own beans and gettting my hands on 98 mm burr grinders for elite spergery, I do sometimes make my own water with specific mineral composition, but these days the filtered water from my fridge is a mostly workable substitute for daily drink.

It feels like they've burnt the beans because they have. They do this in order to make sure the flavor profile is uniform across the board. Try lighter roasted beans from speciality shops and you can actually taste the difference.

I found a recipe for chai coffee. Has anyone ever tried it? Just wondering it as I am going to try making it over the weekend once I get all the ingredients.

Overpriced and shit.

My method

Locally roasted whole beans.
Good grinder, preferably burr mill.
Setting depends on your taste preference (I prefer medium grind)
37 grams of grounded beans with 525 grams of filtered water.
Bring water to a 200 F boil, preferably with a goose neck kettle.
Using a pour over coffee maker, put in the filter and wet it with 25 grams of water.
Pour out the water used to wet the filter then a small rinse with filtered water.
Put 37 grams of coffee in filter.
Pour water until the coffee grounds "bloom"
Wait 30-45 seconds.
Depending on strength / taste of coffee, pour water so it takes between 3-4 minutes making sure you are evenly pouring the water.
