Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Dunno if I'm late, I just found out that they're allowing channels/content creators to selectively block VPNs.
Unskippable ads, breaking videos for users with adblock, forcing webGL, and now VPNs disallowed. It's the logical progression of things. Within 5 years, you won't be able to watch youtube at all unless you are 100% identifiable, trackable and thereby marketable to advertisers.

I am personally not too butthurt about this, when it comes to that point I will just stop watching youtube altogether. I already quit watching youtube on mobile ever since ReVanced kept breaking and required more and more time to update, patch, etc. I have downloaded a LOT of youtube videos with TubeArchivist so in 15-20 years when you need to connect your NWO Gov ID just to watch a video, it'll be enough to just say no.

In addition to that, YouTube has been increasingly more hostile to any user using VPNs or Tor (and probably some residential addresses in some blocks too) regardless of whatever type of video they're trying to access. Some VPN services are blocked on most if not all their addresses. This is part of a broader war involving every major platform and provider (such as cloudflare) against the average privacy-minded internet user, and picked up speed last year because of all the scraping those corporations are doing to train their models. Somehow using youtube without interacting with the site in any other way harms their community, but if you make an account you're good to go, spam as much as you can, it's not like they're doing anything about them.

Can confirm. On TOR when viewing YT videos on here, depending on what country IP I'm connected to, it either works once and then does the "sign in" prompt, or break and give me that white screen with the link and other info, sometimes with a captcha request because it's a bad IP that is doing nefarious things or whatever.

That puts a kibosh on me potentially watching a certain something that's region-locked through Tor or, if it really came to that, a VPN (being deliberately vague so lurking glowies don't get any ideas)

I think in the long run YouTube will try to make itself less less usable for people without accounts, similarly what Quora, Twitter, Reddit etc are doing. The "age restriction" is already a soft kill switch for videos, not as bad as the long abandoned (?) youtube jail where the video is up, but there are no recommendations, comments etc. on the page.

"This helps protect our community." And who is that community? The select few megacorps that run the internet?

The worst part is where when it comes to streaming, your only options are Youtube or Twitch (yes, I know there ARE other alternatives but they are the "Dailymotion" of streaming services).

I remember how Mixer had some real potential, that is until Microsoft decided to pull the plug on the whole thing and convert the fucking thing to Facebook Gaming (prff, yeah, as if anyone will use that)

They love using "protecting our X" when justifying themselves, dont they?

"Our community"
"Our democracy"
"Our environment"
"Our values"
"Our society"

and etc and etc and its bullshit everytime.

For some weird reason YouTube keeps auto deleting my comments, I am not saying any swears, slurs, threats or anything that goes against the TOS and my comments are deleted as soon as I post them, my last comment was "cats are silly, cute little critters" on a cat video and that was auto deleted
YT's censorship algo is retarded, and it keeps getting worse.

It makes you wonder if its their system being retarded or if they tag users if they step out of the line.

I always wondered how much the out of site activity affects your standing with YouTube.

It is pretty much everything with computers and the internet. That is both the beauty and the horror of tech. You have one working platform/software package, everybody goes there, there is no reason to have a second one. A vast majority of users just want to access resources/do things, that's all. They don't even think about the platform, that is just a means to access content.

It's brutally efficient and effective, but basically you can't course correct due to inertia and the insanely high barriers to entry. Not to mention good luck attracting talent, good will from the media, payment processors, app store placements etc, if you step out of line with the establishment.

Well, it's either empty corporate speak, or they are speaking like the owners of those things.

I'm not going to use YouTube any longer. There's nothing there but boring, meaningless videos that are made to cash in on sponsorships, so it's pointless to endure the shit that Google is pulling.
St!ll f!nd Sch!zo v!ds somet!mes, so !t's not all bad.
yes my EYE key !s st!ll unrespons!ve, dec!ded to use exclamat!ons wh!ch are just fl!pped as confus!ng as !t may be.

They have your digital footprint on a blocklist. If you left a comment that was negative, inflammatory or argumentative in any way and especially if you've sworn even once on an alt, you're flagged for good. I've made brand new accounts, tried commenting, and they were automatically deleted after 20 seconds consistently. That's the only explanation.

Related to Google, it seems they have shut down traditional image search, because even with an extension to force Lens to redirect there, it brings up a 413 error every time. On top of that I'm getting the IP block on Youtube where they want you to sign in to confirm you're not a bot because they blocked me for downloading. Using a VPN works, but for how long?

I really want these cocksuckers to go out of business, go penniless on the streets, and slowly rot away from the multiple stacks of AIDS they will contract from turning tricks for lunch money

I was on Windows and wanted to look at something on Youtube. Haven't installed FreeTube there yet so the fastest way was just raw dogging Youtube on Firefox.

The page took around 20 to 30 seconds to load. Reminded me of those reports months ago of Firefox and/or adblock users being deliberately slowed down on Youtube.
In my exprience it's been faster with adblocks than without, but I also use script-blocker and "enhancer" addons so maybe it's them.

"This helps protect our community."
Well fuck "your" community, especially since signing in doesn't help with age or regional restrictions.

It makes you wonder if its their system being retarded or if they tag users if they step out of the line.
#vairlvideo

Does that hashtag mean anything to Indians and Pakistanis or is there a whole unironic YouTube ecosystem based on a typo of "viralvideo?"
Why not both?

Does anyone know why the livestreams on Youtube randomly crash the tab? It seems to be happening more and more.

Google Images got lobotomized several times. Lens is completely useless. Use Yandex Images.
