Sometime in the near future:

I'll likely archive all of the music I've saved on playlists over the years and give up on Youtube. Last time I watched anything on Twitch was back in 2018 so it's not hard to give up on Youtube for me. This is just going to get other platforms more members and the Street shitter running Youtube can't figure that out. Though he also can't figure out how to use a toilet.

By the way

Does this mean YouTube is live re-encoding content?

No, this is not needed. Online video streaming nowadays uses a "playlist" of video chunks. These chunks are seperately encoded videos, so can easily be swapped out, or concatted to. This also means that an ad-blocker could ignore specific chunks if they know which ones to ignore.

Is this the end of SponsorBlock?

No, if YouTube displays any UI such as a clickable link, that means it has to know how long the ad is. SponsorBlock could find this data as well. There is also the feature for clicking on a timestamp in a comment that would need to know the duration of the ad, so it should be findable somewhere, it just might be kind of hard.

In the short term, SponsorBlock will not work for people with this experiment.

Will this be the end of general adblockers?

Probably not. But it makes things harder. As always, uBlock Origin work best on Firefox-based browsers, especially now that we reach the end of manifest v2.

Will this affect yt-dlp, NewPipe, etc.

Maybe in the future, but at the moment it seems to only switch to this server-side ad injection via client-side flags.

The more pressing issue for these clients is the new sign in requirement to watch videos for some people.

Will this affect DeArrow

The offsetting issue will affect DeArrow thumbnail submissions, but should be fixable in the same way as SponsorBlock.

I don't think that's quite the turn-off you think it is anymore.
You have to realize if you can't see the forest for the trees, though. Most people don't want the far right stuff any more then they want the tranny/gender/alphabet soup thing shoved in their faces all the time. Odysee and Bitchute are the leper colonies creators are banished to for falling afoul of the YT PC police. Both have lots of other content on their platforms, but the right wing/free-speecher/conspiracy/outrage stuff is front and center right on the homepage, as most of the views on those platforms are coming from people who are aligned with that kind of content. Normies take one look and bail. So both platforms remain small with only limited growth potential, and as a result, they have limited resources. For uploads I think they top out at what, 720p resolution? Meanwhile, YT is going all 4k UD, and is hooked up to the largest search engine in the world. It's the go-to platform for a reason (unfortunately).

I did try out both Odysee and Bitchute. I liked Odysee's interface and overall appearance, but I really hated the point/wallet thing to get access. Bitchute's interface was clunky, though they did make modest improvements in the time I was using it. Neither resulted in my setting the Internet on fire because the audience just wasn't there. To be fair, maybe I just suck at videoing, can't deny that as a factor.

But what other alternatives are there? Vimeo? Newgrounds? No traffic there, low res video, etc., so it seems like there's nothing. If there were another platform that could appeal to a wide audience and deliver good long form video quality, with common sense oversight, it could be the kick in the ass YouTube seriously needs to smarten the fuck up.

Musk is maybe the only one who could make it happen, but I'm not counting on it. It would probably take some kind of consortium with vast resources and a commitment to creating a true competitor to YouTube.

I'd love to be :optimistic: and say that this would be the final straw and people would finally ditch YouTube, but we all know that normies will gobble it up and make the experience worse for everyone as a result anyway.
TYD can't come soon enough.

Who wants to bet that this is the beginning of the end of you-tube? This is the first domino that will cause people to give up on it.

The actual quality of the content on there has gone downhill - the few channels I still watch have had to censor themselves or barely upload anymore. People (especially younger people) go there because it's free, easy, and they can block the ads. If it stops being easy and the ads can't be blocked then I can see them going elsewhere. There's not exactly a shortage of sites with stuff to watch, and Youtube's ads are uniquely bad compared to Tubi/Amazon/Netflix with ads.

Those younger viewers are very fickle and will be happy to drop the site if they can't have background noise without loud intrusive ads. It could be very funny if the creators start to notice their viewer count slipping on their 10 hour video essays.

This very sane decision by the team surely will not backfire into a constant spam of advertisement with Adult-oriented, Scam and Viruses being shown to everyone, including kids.
I knew something was up when for the first time in what must be a decade I started getting YT ads when watching through my PC (watching through the TV has always been fucked). Of course who else is it that starts getting shown up 2000's frosted tip jersey shore-looking fucks hyping up some kind of financial scheme.

how many people actually use adblock?
isn't it just a tiny percentage because most youtube watchers are retarded normies watching from their phones?
I don't know about mobile, but I remember seeing a figure of 60%+ of internet users using adblock.

I detest being advertised to. If I can't skip an ad, I just mute and let it have a quiet retard moment until what I actually want to see pops up. I wouldn't be harmed if I just cut YouTube entirely, place is shit. Guess I don't care enough either way, so I get to just watch the fire spread and consoom everything impartially.

Sadly, and I hate to say it, TikTok.

You can upload long-ish videos to it. Will the fine gentlebroccoli of TikTok watch? Well, that's for you to find out. But it is an alternative if you change up your presentation style and video length a bit.

There's also X.com, yes. Although run by one of the biggest idiots on God's green Earth you can upload shorter stuff to it just fine.

tl;dr due to economic pressures and attitudinal generational shifts long form content is fucked, and will be more and more fucked going forward. Change it up a bit or perish.

Ads actually exert a subconscious effect on you. It's fucking poison. Not to mention all of the scams, that have led the FBI to recommend adblockers. When even the feds, who normally don't really give 2 fucks about this kind of thing view this as a crisis is when you should be worried and actively revolt against your jeet corporate overlords, who want to reduce you to serfdom.
