Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

Afaik this would be massively above the current cost to deliver the video, I would guess they will chunk it into independent parcels as they had for some encodings in the past and just insert additional chunks into the stream containing the ad. Will lose fine grain control of where exactly the ad takes over but in theory way cheaper

They're just going to inject ads using keyframes in the video being watched. The ads can be arbitrary durations and vary per-user with minimal performance impact. And there's no need to re-encode anything beyond what happens when the video and adverts are uploaded.

Did anyone else get the new horrendous UI update? I found a script that somewhat fixes it but it still breaks things and hides shorts. Does anyone know an extension that just completely reverses it to the 2023 layout?
Send in a feedback it got reverted for me in a week or two. I used the enhancer for youtube extension in firefox until then and it fixed things a bit, but not completely.

Customtube extension allows you to change youtube's layout from 2008 to 2021 (although some are buggy) and many other features like remove shorts, those dogshit search results.

But let's be real here. None of the other platforms are true competition for YT. Odysee? BitChute? They're too small and skew far right, full of conspiracy theory shout show guys, free speechers, and all of that. Normies aren't gonna patronize a platform like that in any large numbers. It's a turn off to them. And normies are the vast majority, so you need something that will appeal to a more general, universal audience if you want the thing to get anywhere. None of the alternative video platforms do that, which is why they'll always be small. They don't have the resources of Google and that's why, despite YT's shitty advertising and thought-crime policies, no one has come up with a YouTube killer.
I looked up Vidlii because that was the website that has Asian English dubs of Digimon, but I found that website permits gore videos.

The GG Generals on 8moe have a post regarding what sites to give attention to and Vidlii is one of them. The other is DTube (https://d.tube/), but nothing loads when you go on it. Before it used to show videos like a normal video site, but now idk what the deal is. Even on a clean no extension browser, it doesn't show anything.

Veoh is another one, but it seems mainly asians use that one - https://www.veoh.com/

There's also AVideo (https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo) and MediaGoblin (https://mediagoblin.org/) but that requires you to set up your own server (basically make your own YouTube)

I'm experiencing an issue where I come back to a tabbed away YouTube video like 45 minutes in, then some ad tries to play, is silenced and blocked and I watch 15 seconds of black screen, and the player goes back to 15 seconds or however long after the ad would be from the very start of the video, losing my progress. And sometimes even though the ad is blocked I still have to click skip on the multiracial slop still frame ad afterwards. Really fucking stupid

What really pisses me off about Youtube's constant bullshit UI changes and unending war with adblockers is that the comments have had a long standing issue with them displaying the comments for a previous video.

According to Altpedia, they also have a problem with CSAM and don't seem to allow you to delete your channel easiy. Staying the fuck away from that site.

I misread your sentence and though that you were telling me to stay away. Either way, I am going to stay away.
What is not helping is that, when I saw the front page, there was a vide of a Daesh execution, though thankfully the thumbnail did not have any gore. I closed the tab.

I hate how YouTube recommends videos. I watch one clip of a tv show and all my recommendations are just more clips I've already seen or have no interest in watching ever. I try clicking "don't recommend channel" which works, but my recommendations get so messed up, all I can do it erase my watch history, which also erases the hidden list of channels I politely asked not to recommend, starting the whole cycle all over again. It would be nice if YouTube let you add channels you don't like to a blacklist that wouldn't be affected by watch history.

Also YouTube mixes are the worst. You listen to one song and YouTube auto-generates a playlist based on that song. The problem is that the other songs are never consistent in artist or even genre. It's just other songs from your watch history or likes.

I've had the same thing happen, and it's very annoying. One thing YouTube is surprisingly honest about (at least with creators), is that the whole goal is to keep someone on the platform watching as long as possible. That way they can stuff in more and more ads to annoy people with. Watch time is the only metric that matters to them, so they figure if you liked one video you'll want to see a trillion more like it. Rather than delete everything, I find that if I just delete the one oddball clip from my watch history, that helps to minimize the onslaught of noise YouTube keeps throwing at me. And I refuse to listen to the mixes at all, since I realized it's bound to generate crap choices with no variety.

I miss when youtube has a actual community and were untied.

Nowadays its just full with rampant brainrot leftist bots spamming anti white/American propaganda in every video comment section, broken /questionable recommendations that already violates their own fucking policy and desperately shilling unskippable video advertisement that last fucking forever.

Oh, cool. I was watching a video on youtube, and when the person said "subscribe," the outline of the subscribe button underneath the video lit up. How long has that been a thing? I normally watch videos on my phone.

Usually, when I open a video from an URL, youtube reloads 3-4 times, which is annoying, but whatever. Yesterday I tried to open a video and the player just started throbbing between the wide format and the standart format. It just reloaded non-stop changing between the formats.

Also, I accidentally opened the shorts tab and I was immediately blasted by a video with the volume set on max, can't even scroll down to stop the video, since the next one starts playing.

Don't know if this is the thread for it. Maybe someone can help me out ? So I recently continued archiving certain parts of a YouTube channel. Was able to get one video saved with the Wayback Machine. There were a couple of videos listed as private, though I was able to get one video link. Unfortunately, every "saved instance" on the Wayback Machine gave me an error message. Is the Wayback Machine prone to stop working when under heavy load, or whatever was saved got corrupted at some point and is no longer retrievable ? Someone got any ideas ?

Most videos don't actually get saved by the wayback machine just the page
