Youtubers that jumped the shark

Sorry, I couldn't find a topic similar to this.

Basically... Youtubers you used to think were good, but then they started sucking.

And I just know everyone is gonna name Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, or else some other Channel Awesome alumni.... go ahead, get it out of your systems.

For me tho the prominent example is Derek Alexander, who went under two names--first, the Happy Video Game Nerd. Later he changed his name to Stop Skeletons From Fighting.

Happy Nerd was his golden era, where he felt like he had honest enthusiasm for the subject. One criticism people tend to have is that a lot of the games he talked about are pretty well-known... thing is, they weren't well-known back when he covered them (save maybe for Earthbound) so you could argue he's the reason we even know about stuff like Wild Guns today.

That said, even back then some of the problems started showing. In his video on the Splatterhouse trilogy for example, he stops the review to make a rant about how despite the game being bloody its totally moral and not something moral guardians should be upset about. Derek has also always had a bit of an irritating attitude that can come off as almost insulting (this was most prominent during his Mega Man 9 review, which to be fair he apologized for).

When his channel's name changed to Stop Skeletons From Fighting, at first all was well because it seemed like a natural continuation of what he was already doing as the Happy Nerd. But the longer the show went on the worse things got. Of course, he got more woke, and that always sucks...

...But for me the worse things were that his content became more normie-tier. He went from talking about forgotten gems to talking about games everyone knows or even just retarded subjects like a video about Nintendo game titles that could, if you really squint, sound like sexual innuendos. His series "Punching Weight" is supposed to be about games that do amazing things with their level of technology (for example 3D platformers on the Gameboy Advance) but one of the videos is about fucking Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch. In general a large portion of his videos are about Nintendo concepts and peripherals....

... But for me the biggest problem was he started repeating content. For example, he did a video about fan-translated horror games.... and the last third of the video is about Sweet Home, a game he had dedicated a full review to during his Happy Nerd era. His most recent video is about the 3DO port of Doom, which again is something he's discussed before. Nowadays it feels like he likes to hit the same subjects over and over, and it gives you the feeling he's lost the enthusiasm and is just spinning his wheels.

................................

Anyway, that's my opening sperg-out.

Got any Youtubers you used to like who jumped the shark? (And preferably not ones who already have a separate thread on the farms).

There actually is a thread in a similar vein to this, though I guess the particulars are a bit different. You might like it anyways, check it out. https://kiwifarms.net/threads/what-video-caused-you-to-stop-watching-a-youtuber.105109/

Personally, I don't think I really have any off the top of my head who don't already have threads. I've had people where I just stopped being interested in their content, or they stopped putting as much out, but that's not really jumping the shark.

Once Grace became a featured part of Stop Skeletons, that's when things started to turn for the worst. I don't think she really adds anything outside of your typical leftist, feminist viewpoints.

She comes off as a slightly more tolerable Obscurus Lupa.

No. OP wants a list of YouTubers who have jumped over sharks. Not YouTubers who have become shitty

I recall one Youtube comment pointing out that even in videos hosted by Grace, she never really has her own unique voice but just sounds like a woman who happens to have exactly the same mannerisms as Derek... so its clearly still him writing the script.

It makes you wonder why she even has a screen presence at all. I mean you don't see James Rolfe putting his wife on camera.

Derek was always going to cave. Like most dudebros with attitude, he's all talk but actually really easy to cuck.

Joe Goes.

Some small albino dude would go to cons, events and show them off while mildly trolling people. Was actually a fairy entertaining channel for 4-5 years. Eventually the Youtube adpocolypse came and destroyed his ability to produce content so he fucks off churning out click bait articles. Comes back after not making a video for 4 years and outs himself as a tranny.

2017, second to last video;

2021, last video outing himself as a tranny;

That stop skeletons from fighting guy had that awful Dragon Quest video where the bitch in it went on a unhinged rant about how the music in DQ11 sucks because the composer was kicked out of a nightclub and said the Rape of Nanking did not happen and if it is did, it should of. Nothing in the video had anything to do with the music. Just pure unhinged mouth frothing over his politics.

I've said this in the past, but... Markiplier.

It's funny. His earliest videos kinda suck, but then he genuinely improved and actually became a bit of a motivational person, and his videos stopped the "I'm scared of everything" gimmick and became more making fun of the game, which I'd normally like...

..... But lately his videos just irritate me. Essentially Mark has always had an autistic sense of humor (one of his Callisto Protocol videos is literally called "the Poop Zone" for christ's sake) but its gotten worse, where he apparently can't stop acting like a cheap knockoff of Jim Carrey. A good example is in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2: When he sees Poppy walking around, he shouts like an idiot and keeps trying to slap her, which isn't funny.. its annoying.

No joke, I literally switched over to the GTLive playthru of that episode and it was FAR more bearable. Yes literally, Matpat is less annoying.

I also kinda get the feeling that Markiplier has become too much of a "celebrity" and it might have affected him. Funny thing is the warning signs were there early on... someone made an RPG Maker game about Mark which revealed to him that he was becoming more clout-chasey and that genuinely caused him to have a moment of reflection and pull back, and for years his videos were more personal... but it looks like the fame monster finally ate him after all.

They did change VOs, but the brains behind it is the same. Whenever they talk about a James, that's the guy that writes the scripts.
There's also further drama behind that. Dan, the original voice and the creator of the thing (it was a project for animation college) implied on his personal channel he was forced out, but refused to say more. A woke guy, but generally nice and leaves politics out of his content. I watched his Christmastime streams of Katamari games long after I stopped watching video game stuff.

Extra Credits. Used to be an interesting way to see games from a developer's perspective, then went woke.
They were never developers. They couldn’t cut it and went down the culture critic route. Any credits they have is not related to being in the active development team. It’s a bad influence for people wanting to learn programming and game development, as it’s all how they wish it was or how they simplify things for a narrative

Stop Skeletons was always basic bitch liberal shit. Probably one of the first times I heard about "muh male gaze" was in some lame Parasite Eve video he did. His fat stoner friend would go on asking repeatedly if he could play Depression Quest during I think either Clock Tower or Illbleed streams.

Game Sack

It's still decent to watch, but it really lost a lot once Dave left. Got a bit more boring with no one else to bounce opinions off of
What the fuck is that dude's mouth problem? Why is ir so damn big?
:(

Oh thanks for reminding me, when The Game Theorists posted that Sans is Ness shitshow, it really was the moment I realized this was no longer a channel about deep analytical theorizing about a game's lore or the science/math aspect of it; but instead a channel corporately run that's really no different than Buzzfeed or the average news article pumping out the latest schlock of the week. Sure it probably was never that "good" to begin with, but looking back it really felt like watching a nerd geek out about what the meaning of a game's hidden lore could possibly be. Now it's just another corpo-run youtube channel.

Once you start hitting the mid-point of the 2010s, his jokes no longer remain as jokes. Pan became a victim of his own neet tendencies and ‘jumped the shark’ as his life and character started blurring a lot more. The Toy Story let’s play breakdown and his Adult Swim audition just highlight that the character isn’t a character anymore, if it ever was? I rarely watch him now, but going through his Farms thread is just depressing. He had talent, if only he got into the industry like 6 years ago, maybe then he would have ended up better?
