Youtubers that jumped the shark

I sometimes don’t like to admit it, but SMG4 has jumped the shark in the last few years due to his usage of too much 3D mod animation and not enough old Mario textures from the N64 in his videos.

Plus, adding too many new characters in convoluted subplots while using over the top anime references in almost all of your stories can make you lose track as to what this channel was really supposed to be about.

'Bobby’s Perspective'. He used to be an ex-vegan bodybuilder from Macedonia, who did mostly anti-vegan videos and travelogues. Lots of videos on Vegan Gains, Joey Armstrong, Earthling Ed, and various other vegan lolcows and grifters. Some of these were fairly popular, with many of his videos routinely getting over 40K views.

But about a year ago he went off the rails. Instead of videos on dieting, working out, and calling out vegan diets, he suddenly became a pro-Islam channel.

I only occasionally watched him over the last few years, but I’ll try to summarize what happened as best I can remember:

Around 2019 or so, he took a six month hiatus after some drama with another YouTuber (I don’t remember all the details, but I think it had to do with revealing ex-carnivore dieter Frank Tufano’s gay sex videos) and hid his videos for fear of being false-flagged. When he returned to YouTube, he claimed he’d suddenly converted to Orthodox Catholicism, and starting adding videos on orthodoxy and his Macedonian origins to his regular anti-vegan content. Many of his more popular anti-vegan livestreams and videos are still hidden or deleted.

However, his channel views never really recovered from the long hiatus, typically getting about 10K. Then, about ten months ago, he made a video about reading the Koran as a Christian, and it got 600k views. No idea why it went viral, given how different it was from his usual content.

You can see here what his regular content was like last year, when his Koran video went viral.

This seems to have been his jump-the-shark moment, as it began his transition into a pro-Muslim grift channel. Within weeks he was regularly making pro-Muslim videos where he pretends to be Christian, even though he clearly converted to Islam some time ago and was just using the "Christian reacts"-label to create drama. Seems to have worked; he hasn't made a vegan or bodybuilding video in about six months now, and his content is entirely pro-Muslim propaganda videos that regularly break 100K views.

So how many of you remember/have ever watched a channel called Weird Video Games?

The host was Tom aka Heisanevilgenius, and in what's probably a bad sign already... he used to be part of Channel Awesome.

That said, he was one of the better channels. His gimmick was talking about games that were just strange or weird, occasionally making jokes, but usually he let the games speak for themselves or just trying to articulate what he's seeing.

Now, his videos weren't perfect, but most of the time they were hilarious without having to try too hard, and he was one of the few CA contributors who never tried to crowbar in sketches or storylines (usually he'd only cut back to himself to illustrate something about the game).

Then his content started slowing down. To be honest, its easy to see what happened, and its something he even kind of alludes to in his last couple of WVG videos: After awhile he just got desensitized to weirdness in video games and even acknowledged that it felt like he was just saying the same things over and over.

For a bit, it looked like he might have found an effective pivot when he did videos called "Golden Cheese," one of which--a video about the Law for Kids website--carries the spirit of Weird Video Games, just... its about a website instead. More Like This, please!

.... Instead, nowadays he mostly does a podcast called Wiki Sift, where he and two friends spend hours discussing things like Star Trek Novels. Put bluntly... you know how Spoony stopped doing reviews and decided it was easier to just do livestreams with unscripted commentary? Wiki Sift is basically Tom's version of that.

......................................

Another one: Caddicarus. While I think most Kiwis have never liked him, I kinda used to. But I'm not sure I like his recent direction, where instead of a few smaller videos on a more frequent basis, he will upload a stupid long video once every couple of millennia, and often on shit I can't see the appeal of. Sorry Caddy but I don't care to hear about how hard it was to get achievements in Crash fucking Bandicoot.

If anything it's more interesting the "jump the shark" moment that cemented those YouTubers as shit. Most of the time they just disappear into the background until some controversy reminds you they exist.
I imagine that's why this topic is one of the less traction-heavy ones, because yeah... jumping the shark tends to be heralded by some sort of major change in their output (Quinton Reviews pivoting towards being left-wing, Spoony pivoting towards unscripted lets plays, etc) or the content itself getting worse over time, but most Youtubers tend to be much the same now as they were when you first discovered them.

Like I was tempted to bring up Dominic Noble (Lost in Adaptation) but really.... nothing about his style of content changed, I just completely lost interest in him. I can't really say he jumped the shark when I'm the one that changed.

Dominic really does fucking suck though.... I think of him as the Irate Gamer of literature (specifically regarding that its well-known Chris Bores had zero interest in gaming before he decided to make a youtube show about it, which is exactly the vibe I get with Dominic. It's too bad we live in an age where response videos and call-outs are considered a no-no because I would've loved to see Dominic get the kind of take-downs that Irate Gamer used to get).

Ironically, Irate Gamer himself is kind of this in reverse. Used to be I couldn't stand the guy, but now his old videos are genuinely kind of nostalgic and I've even had fun with some of his newer content. A weird part of the appeal though is both he and James Rolfe kinda act like its still 2010, so they're basically the Youtube equivalent of those game designers who deliberately make NES-style games (how appropriate).

ThorHighHeels just did a video yesterday about how Swery is bad because "transphobic Deadly Premonition 2", "all his villains are minorities or trannies" blablabla. Just the same old shit as everyone else. He used to be really unique but he has drunk the Kool-Aid hard. Disappointing.

He really has been quite openly a fag for the last few years it seems. Sucks that he had a unique style and usually highlights a bunch of shit that most other video game YouTubers don't cover.

This thread has been made like 4 times already with a slightly different name. "YouTubers you like that everyone dislikes",
"YouTubers you stopped watching", "What video made you stop watching a YouTuber",
and now this. The answers are always the same.

I've never seen a single second of his videos despite YT constantly recommending them, but I've always hated him based on his thumbnails alone. Those gay 3D cartoon avatar reaction thumbnails don't go well with topics noone gives a shit about.

Nice to know everyone hates him as well.

So what you're saying is we should bring balance to the Force by making contrast topics, like "Youtubers who are cool," "Youtubers who started bad but became good," "Youtubers you'd fuck if you weren't afraid of STDs," etc.

Always count on the guy who will go crazy after putting on a magic mask to come up with the greatest ideas!

Now, Caddicarus is sometimes fun viewing. His episodes about old nursery rhyme tapes and Peppa Pig for example (even the one where he and his two step-daughters discuss the show was actually hilarious--the younger little girl comes off as a bit of a try-hard but the older one says some things which sound shocking at first but are actually astute observations).

On that note though, last time I saw Caddy mentioned on KF I recall people having a problem with him having stepdaughters (IE kids not biologically his own) at all. At the time I was inclined to agree, but nowadays..... well, I mean, they're adorable. Though you can argue its bad form that he made Youtube videos featuring them (this, however, is something he seems to have stopped doing).

EDIT

I know it kinda sounds like I'm talking about the guy so much lately, but I just had another complaint to add to the "why I don't like Markiplier anymore" pile.

Although actually, when I think about it some of the issues I have are things he's always done, just I used to be able to bear them.

But like.... did you guys ever have those moments as a kid or teen or whenever when you watched someone else play a game and you got frustrated because they were playing like a retard? Yeah.

For example. I'm watching a game right now (Crimson Snow), in which your light source is flares that only last for a limited time, and they're a limited resource.

So I get severely irritated whenever I see Mark, while having one out, just stop moving for no reason so he can do a bit on his facecam. Thus wasting hiss light source.

At another point, he opens a door, there's something weird on the other side, and he stops--even taking his hand off the mouse and keyboard--to have a comical "I don't like the looks of that" reaction. And I'm like "yes, its a creepy thing in a scary game PLAY THE FUCKING GAME ALREADY."

In fact one of his annoying habits in general is he'll sometimes stop paying attention to the game entirely (there was actually one game where this got him killed). Like, who the fuck plays games like this?

I've mentioned this before but YouTubers who decide that, of all sponsorships, RAID: Shadow Legends were the thing to sell out to.

Yes, it's a cliche at this point, but who even the fuck wants to notice 3-5 minute long sponsorship windows were added? What's indicative of slipping judgement is the fact this shovelware doesn't even pay off to sponsor. You're more likely to win the lottery than have mobile shovelware pay off for the amount of minutes you've dedicated a sponsor segment towards.

At this point, Sponsorblock tells us how much content creators really do not enjoy making videos but see it as a legitimate job on a platform that never had the urgency to cater long-term.

ESPECIALLY hotdiggedydemon, who chose to leave the Raid Shadow Legends logo covered in... ahem... ghostly cum vomit for over 10 minutes.

Is this the same guy who did those fucked up My Little Pony cartoons? I'm kinda shocked he's even still around.

Hey, necroing this topic because of something that happened with someone mentioned in this topic.

A week or so back Weird Video Games posted a short--a clip from one of his old reviews (so many Youtubers have been doing this lately, like the "shorts" thing gives them a way to ride on their ancient days of glory).

Some guy posted a comment on that video that basically echo'd the sentiments in this thread:

Well, of course, it turns out Tom is as stable and able to take criticism as any other Channel Awesome employee (current or former). A week later, he posted this response:

Once you start hitting the mid-point of the 2010s, his jokes no longer remain as jokes. Pan became a victim of his own neet tendencies and ‘jumped the shark’ as his life and character started blurring a lot more. The Toy Story let’s play breakdown and his Adult Swim audition just highlight that the character isn’t a character anymore, if it ever was? I rarely watch him now, but going through his Farms thread is just depressing. He had talent, if only he got into the industry like 6 years ago, maybe then he would have ended up better?
I think whenever he started pushing "Loki IRL" that looks like a teenagers cough syrup drawings was a tipping point, then the podcast with genderplops bodied it into a canyon. For what it's worth I still like the editing style and enjoy just learning about weird 2000s games.

The guy went full voltage vengerz having to explain why his next video has no set schedule and the videos are done when they're done. Also how many former CA contributors get burned out and decide to do livestreaming? There's Count Jackula, Marzgurl, Sean Fausz, ChaosD1, Dena Natali, and of course Spoony and probably various others I'm not aware of.

And another thing:

His upcoming videos are Aero Fighters 2, Earthbound, and Killer7? I'll admit I legit have been wondering if he'd ever cover the Aero Fighters sequels after doing the first one, but the other two just sound like he's out of ideas and went for low-hanging fruit, or like he's doing videos he knows will get an algorithm bump, or maybe it was something his patreons voted on.

I just can't see an Earthbound video being good. I mean, at this point Earthbound has been so over-analyzed that you know people will just accuse him of not understanding the deeper meaning and layers and he'll just come off as a shallow-minded idiot.

Thorhighheels just did this for me. I knew he was Dutch, so him being kinda faggy was something I sorta tolerated since he did steer me in the direction of some neat, niche JRPGs before.

But, man. He's kinda nuts with his FFXVI review. His constant assertion that FF protags are "queer" and how they "aren't typical manly men" is nutty. He kept going on about how Clive's look sucked since he was traditionally masculine by Western standards. Which is a "no duh" thing. Yoshi P was booty blasted at the complaints Western game journos dish out to JRPGs. Chief among them is "Wow, these guys look like they should be doing gay porn, not saving the world." So, Clive was specifically designed to be the first FF protagonist that no one would make sissy SFM porn of.

Legitimately surprised that he can't grasp cultural sensibilies. Slight, slender men are what are kinda valued by middle aged housewives in Japan. It's why dudes in Kamen Rider and shit look the way they do. The Western market was 100% secondary up until FFX, so it's not like they were too concerned about "pushing queer sensibilities".

Him whining about an attempted rape was kinda gay too. He even acknowledges that "Well, it's sorta based on medieval Europe, at that was a rapey time and place, but it's icky and bad guys can't be that bad". Bitching about how "old Japanese men" can't write about slavery or discrimination was an odd thing to say too. Does he not think Japan didn't have slaves or any ethnic or religious conflicts? He came off as just super sensitive and totally unable to even think about things from a Japanese point of view.

Which, again, is the main cultural perspective until like the PS2 era of FF. Apparently he's also some kind of intersex and that's why he identified with pretty FF protags. Which, is nuts if you've ever seen the guy's face. Why is it always the ugliest, weirdest troons who wanna larp as animu pretty boys?

Dorkly.

Once upon a time they were the peak on videogame animations during the early 2010's but their overreliance on the "If Pokédex entries were literal", forcing a meme using "huh, neat." down your throat every once in a while and the fact that you can only hear about two or three voice actors at this point show me that they're out of ideas.

Just look how many episodes they did with the exact premise.

1691551494668.png

There was even a part on one of those videos where when they were making a description on Seaking, there was only a sprite of animation that just explains to you why a possible skit with the description couldn't be funny, and that's it. Not to mention that the comedy at this point is super super dry to the point that you only stare at the animations and see the punchline come from a mile away.

Since Pokémon Rusty, these guys don't make anything even remotely funny anymore. They just make animations of Pokémon and nothing more.

I must say though, the VA of Mario in Dorkly is still one of the best Mario voices I've ever heard.

Funny to hear about Derek Alexander, and some pointless lore. Early when he was still living in Alaska and going to by Happy Video Game Nerd, he used to host some episodes with a fat dude named Calvin or Kelvin. They were both part of a music group called Starship Amazing iirc. Wondering what happened to that guy, I went down a rabbit hole on Twitter a few years ago and it turns out the guy trooned out. He also constantly begs for money.

Band link (scroll down for photo before the trooning)

Found his twitter:

Anyways, pointless lore.
