"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

*Spider Man 2 was his last review on Escapist and his last Zero Punctuation episode before he and Nick started up Second Wind and rebranded the show under Fully Ramblomatic. First of all, the comments are still disabled on that last ever ZP video, gee I wonder why! Second, he doesn't go out with a bang but on a whine. The censorship issue is even worse than in his Hogwarts review, whatever bite his video might have had was taken out, which is frankly sadder than him becoming this husk that he is now, or was back 2 years ago. Third, his humor is just as outdated as his format, at the end he makes a butthurt rant about the Marvel fanboys, and aside from his obligatory "not my niggerinos!" strawman where he says people only dislike the game because there is a black person in it, he makes a cheetoh dust joke when talking about the comic fan nerds who have a problem with the game's story. Well, "joke" is a strong word, his crying maybe, point is that this would have been relevant about 15-20 years ago, if he wanted to make a more relevant joke it would have to be about that same nerd fandom all trooning out or making it "hospitable" for the LGBT community and then make a MJ chin joke to accompany it. Of course, he is an "ally" so he can't do that, but the truth is that the stereotypical cheetoh dust nerd who would fight you over minutia of his favorite capeshit comic or whatever to the last breath is a dying breed, as it has been pointed out many times HRT hit the nerd population stronger than crack hit the ghettos. This right here ends his ZP career, the same old jokes he's been making for well over a decade at that point, the absolute lowest hanging fruit and ones that make less sense than ever. Oh and of course the same tired old pearl clutching about inclusivity, from the same guy who literally used to make blackface jokes in his videos. Nothing has changed since, just that his friend from the office is now both his gimp and his sugardaddy now that he works at SW. Fitting fate, I say!

He was, but admittedly I think the political landscape wasn't as polarised back then, so there wasn't quite as much White solidarity. Yahtzee was in pretty mainstream company, echoing your smug Bill Maher types. I think he's stayed the same but the zeitgeist has changed to where his politsperging feels a lot more onerous than it did (at least for me) at the time.

You're right though - he did rush to the defence of muh poor spearchuckers in RE5 and flat-out stated you couldn't be racist to Europeans/Spaniards like you could nigs (to the people who pointed out how those were represented in RE4).

He concluded that "Capcom aren't bad people. They're just idiots." I think these days anyone can agree with the latter sentence.

A lot of the way I judge creators when it comes to their positions is not really if they say something I don't like or not, it's how often they go on about it. I've talked about this in a post on Who Are These Podcasts. To quote myself, "what always clues me in to if someone is truly a shithead or not is how often they repeat some sentiment." It's why Vito cannot be defended, it's because he's done that sort of thing multiple times, and same with other lolcows, they keep doubling down on it. When it came to Karl I was put off by his elitism (constantly implying that if anyone gets their haircut at SuperCuts or how a few hundred dollars can change their weekend, is poor and poor people are losers, it's like he can't distinguish between "a loser who's bad with money" and "someone who works but doesn't have enough money where they can just drop $2000 without a second thought". On the other hand, he was sympathetic to Nick Rekieta once (maybe twice) but never white-knights him or keeps talking about how he was wronged.

When it comes to Yahtzee, the one or two reviews were isolated incidents and were more of the typical 2000s liberal behavior that was popular on the Internet back in the day. But nowadays, it's "The Narrative" left-wing shit in almost every single episode, and seemingly contractually required to bat for anyone the American Left likes, and to hit against anyone who has fallen out of fashion.

I noticed this Cracked years and years ago. There were enough references to left-wing politics or culture where it definitely showed what side they were on, but by the time it actually fell off the reading list permanently was when almost every article had some sort of political bent or were just plain unsavory ("5 things no one tells you about being a sex worker", etc.) without irony or humor, and it quickly fell off the reading list.

This is even more important when episodes are so short. 20 seconds sperging about politics is a significant time when there's less than five minutes of actual content. And it happens so often.

2007 was peak year for leftism to be considered cool, coming out of the Bush era. A massive chunk of internet famous people from that time (if not all of them) will never accept the fact that the left now is fake and gay, so they will forever hold the party line even when it goes against everything they claimed to stand for.

Yhatzee going more vocal about his politics is either him aging to be unfunny political busybody or a way to make up for bland content.

I think that's what bothers me about his videos now rather than before, not only has this kind of smug lib humor aged like milk but the pendulum has swung and people are straight up tired of it. You don't see a funny man having a rant about the evils of white people and how poor browns are because that's what is trendy at the time, you see someone who has sick, self-destructive politics as proven over the last 20 years and is either so delusional that he doesn't see it or so stubborn he doesn't care. Correct, but he still had a fit about the "fans" of the comics with the flimsiest strawman I have seen in quite a while. His general take is that people don't like the story because it has a brown person in it, which goes beyond clueless when he doesn't even bring up how MJ looks in that game. She was the bigger point of contention, but again, leftists and their hubris will never be separated, we can't just ADMIT that MJ looks ugly because that will trigger the trannies who see themselves in her!

Borderlands is still shit and Yahtzee still doesn't like it.

* 1:05: he makes the same "Snore-derlands" joke he made for the second game back when I was in pre-school.
* 1:44: "sticks up like a confused hand in a remedial classroom" is funny but very ableist, do better chud.
* 1:54: "Randy Pitchford's dick removal surgery" is funny but very transphobic, do better chud.
* 5:18: The final gag is an extremely wordy tirade that ends with "ill-conceived improv night hosted by professional wrestlers." A sly dig at Commander Sterling perhaps???

Overall this was a low-energy review of a derivative game. Unsurprisingly, it was a boring watch. Skip this one.

So he did create a strawman about non-existent group due to his own inherent political beliefs. Glad we are in agreement, then. This is an indirect shade at people complaining about Miles Morales since him taking away time from Peter's time in the story is one of general complaints, "black spiderman replacing white spiderman" if you will.
Speaking of which, story of Spider Man 2 was such a disappointment. They had something great with the premise but they fucked it up, you don't hear that nearly enough from people complaining about it because it's easier to just complain about the nigger or square jaw Mary Jane.
