"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

i know he was shockingly kinda wealthy back in australia. I think it was a mix of his contract being inked during the web video boom, plus a lower cost of living in australia. I get the sense he earns a lot more from the escapist than anyone would reasonably expect -- just that he now has to do more to earn it (shitty podcasts, shitty dnd, shitty streams) than he did in say 2013.

also kess's parents are loaded apparently so that helps
Ya know, I would have been more shocked if you said her parents weren't loaded. Though I will say this, people claim if Yahtzee leaves then Escapist folds, but I see it as a double death deal if, by some reason Escapist ends its function, Yahtzee will also be quite fucked. Let's be real, the guy isn't the huge draw he once was (heck, even his youtube views have dipped compared to numbers he'd bring back then), he's become even more of a bitter asshole over the years (which might scare off any new viewers combined with other reviewer sites not jumping to hire the guy), so all he'll have left is either his wives cash or B. make a Patreon where his main subs will be made of people who see his word as gospel, hipsters or /v/ type twats.

i do think the escapist are afraid to lose him, and pay above standard rates as a result. he'd do quite well on patreon, and he could adopt the RLM policy of take the fans money but ignore everything they do, say, or think

that being said, i think the escapist actually own the ZP brand... so he'd have to come up with something else if he parted ways -- probably the most borderline copy he could think of

Well, the RLM idea wouldn't be done the 1st time. Since one time when he wanted to head for a game Con, he had this charity drive to get him a ticket and for like...I think it was 100 or 150$ he'd review a game of the person's choice.

Don't forget that the guy's also a writer with a number of books already published; he has said before that if he gets out of the reviewing business that he'd probably focus on that.

Well ye, it kinda seems his books only have popularity among his fanbase. They def aren't anything big outside of that circle, from what I saw anyway.

I'm wondering if Yahtzee could pull off an actual 20 minutes or even 2 hours reviews rather than 4 minutes reviews he's been doing for a decade. My gut says no.
I don't think he's that autistic to do 2 hour reviews. Even 20 is a big stretch.

Doing something like that requires paying attention to every single nook and cranny of a game, especially if it's a game or game series that you absolutely adore or despise. It's rare that you ever see Yatzee madly in love with something, in fact, the only thing I can think of that he likes to harp on as great gaming examples is Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, and Dark Souls.

Don't forget Undertale and Return of the Obra Dinn.

Wow, the week after this thread starts becoming more active, Yahtzee does a review on a lolcow.

Most two hour reviews are basically edited let's play with random facts strewn in. 20 minutes is just a written review spliced with game play clips. The pure autism is when the review time exceeds a normal player speed running through the game (barring the now extinct walking Sims), the review is filled with memes, and the review is about the game's message rather than actual gameplay.

Are his books even any good? Everything I've ever heard about them makes them sound like... well, the kind of books a reviewer would write: the kind of thing where the main characters all vaguely act like they know they're in a work of fiction and comment on all the cliches and stuff, or else intentional "subversions" just so they can say "yeah we've seen this before."

Would be hypocritical if I'm right since this is the kind of thing Yahtzee criticizes in his own reviews, especially if the cliche they're walking into sucks.
