"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

Jesus Jumping Christ, people. I have some interesting news for you - Yahtzee has very strict time constraints. He has ONE WEEK to play the game, weigh every single pro and con and write a concise review. And he might even have to do them 2 weeks in advance, too. I highly doubt you can make a review on a game within a day that's deeper than "game bad bro" or "real good me like". Script alone can take up an entire day, editing visual gags and audio can take up a few hours to a day as well. When you have a very strict time constraint of a single week, and 2 of those days you're making review part of the damn game - you know, the part you're actually paid to do - you have to take whatever shortcuts available. You can't finish every single game within a week of spare time when you have shit to do.

It's the most basic thing people, for some reason, do not understand about critics/reviewers. No matter how assholish he sounded during his tirade, Angry Joe said the same damn thing years ago - scripts don't just appear out of thin air on your computer, a video doesn't just magically appear on the Internet. You can't just will a review into existing. There is a long and boring recording and editing process involved that can take up days, even WEEKS. The simple fact that Yahtzee stayed consistent with his schedule for more than a decade and didn't become stale is a damned miracle by quite a few standards.

And no, my butt is not hurt, but thank you for your concern.

I might be misremembering it, but I think he himself said he's less of a 'game reviewer' and more of a 'game critic'. So he mostly points out flaws within a game. He does this with every single game, even his most favourite ones, like Bioshock, for instance. I think the only game he had absolutely nothing negative to say about was Portal. Even Portal 2 wasn't spared.

Ya know, theres having a tight scheduel and then theres blatantly putting the game on super easy diffuculty and using said difficulty as your means to bitch how the game isnt challenging and too easy. Thats what he did when it came to Wildlands and MGS4.

Even if you like his content, he's still a professional game critic. He just really plays up gimmick of acting like he knows how to play video games to distinguish himself from the other critics. It's a good gag. It's unique. But it's still showbiz.

You know Konami barely makes video games anymore right?

Yes, Kojima was the only person making anything worthwhile at Konami since the turn of the decade, since he's left they've done fuck all except make a handful of very cheap and crap games. That however doesn't change my opinion that the reason he was fired was that the other higher ups were fearing that a Final Fantasy 15 would happen if they kept him, a fear that I feel is understandable.

Valve doesnt make games due to thier VR investment.

Partially yes, their change in focus has meant that their new hires have been mostly for the hardware teams, which is part of the reason you don't see games from them. But they do still have development teams for new games, they didn't stop making games to entirely concentrate on hardware. The main problem's that the flat management structure of the company means that if there's any sort of conflict between major members of the teams they enter grid lock, and because no can force them to resolve the issue it means that the conflict has to be resolved to move forward. Most software they've tried to make since 2012 has hit this issue and as a result get stuck where they are which results in the team eventually disbanding and by extension killing the project, that's the main reason they haven't released a major game in ages.

Capcom wasnt doing so hot until recently but they are killing it now.

That depends on the game, that's why I said Capcom's a mixed bag. Would a Street Fighter or Marvel vs Capcom fan say they're killing it right now? I doubt it considering neither franchise is anywhere close to their height of quality or popularity. On the other hand a Resident Evil or Devil May Cry fan would be more likely to say that, their latest game are considered pretty darn good. Then you have a series like Monster Hunter that's consistently done well and hasn't had much bullshit around it, even during Capcom's dark age that they just came out of. Capcom's always making something good, and they're always making something bad, it just depends on which series of theirs you're talking about, thus I think saying they're a mixed bag is very accurate way of putting it.

I'll leave it at that considering that I'll flat out admit that I don't know enough about Square Enix to comment on them, so I guess thanks for reading that and replying, and hope all's well in your world Sierra.

Honestly, I think it's mostly because he either doesn't wanna go the Jim Sterling route and be solely dependent on Patreon or he kinda realizes that ZP is his biggest source of income. He didn't really win much trying to run a business (two gaming bars both of which folded), he has some books behind his back but they aren't super big and mostly popular among his fans and his games are interesting but I doubt they'd sell much on steam.
I think he carries a genuine passion for the medium that is undimmed by the passing of time. He makes actual little games for himself for little reason other than because he likes them. Contrast him with someone like Jim Sterling...Or Moviebob...

From the little I've seen of him I'm not a fan, don't particularly like his opinions and never liked his humor. Seems like he'd have the same problems I have with Jim Sterling, except that he seems to be much less of a hypocrite and a slime ball than Jim is. He isn't as funny as comedic channels like Dunkey or Vinesauce, nor as good at analysis as channels like Super Bunnyhop and Matthewmatosis, he's just in a dull middle ground for me which I'm deeply disinterested in.

I hear you on this. I think if he went the SBH route and just released on a more occasional scheduled with more in-depth analysis he'd be g2g.

If nothing else I respect his productivity. Doing a video a week and cranking out the occasional book or video game while doing so is pretty impressive, even if the results are usually mediocre. The only thing from him I consistently enjoyed were his Let's Plays of his own games, which had some interesting commentary.

Yeah, I don't think he's missed a Wednesday yet in the 11 years he's been at it. He takes one week off for Christmas, and that's it.

New episode is up, and it's Mortal Kombat 11, as you might imagine.
Unlike the last installment's story, this one's story mode was very lacking. The whole "no more unpractical outfits for women" schtick is undermined by the fact that they're still wearing high heels - the be-all and end-all of unpractical footwear. People aren't exactly looking for moral lessons in MK. Unlocking single use items to make the fight easier and cosmetics rather than entire costumes is unfun, while the Krypt being a giant time sink to grind in-game money and cosmetics for characters you don't play is boring. Ends the review by talking about how there are more pressing issues in the series than women not being naked, like horrible face cap and cosmetics being the same.
And Yoshi's Crafted World on YT, if you missed it.

Yahtzee's great and I love him but a pox to befall him for calling Yoshi's Island the least good Classic Mario game just because it has optional collectibles and somehow that means the game's shaming you.

So, I can pretty much sum up his entire video with one video.

I've always loved videos where people talk about the games they've made.
The ego review was great and I'm glad to see more of that type of content.

First episode of YDD is up:

Yeah, it's promising, but that feels like a second trailer. The first half is "Hi, I'm Yahtzee and here's what I think", second half establishes what the first game's gonna be, and then it ends. I'd prefer to have discovered it years down the line so I could binge it all in a few sessions, but, here we are.

I wish Yahtzee would go on Rogan or do a 3-hour livestream where he talks about game development, honestly.

New episode just came out.

Newest episode on the Escapist is a review of Days Gone

TL;DR versions.

If you're a fan of Devolver Digital games and Hotline Miami in particular, then you might very likely enjoy Katana Zero. It's a pixel art fast-paced sidescroller with an slight 80-90's visual gimmick and a bullet time mechanic. Main criticisms concern plot development slowing the game down, slow-paced parts of the game, such as stealth and a motorbike riding sections, and the apparent lack of player choice towards the ending, despite the illusion of one.
An overall positive review.

"Days Gone is painfully generic." Generic zombie apocalypse sandbox with token RPG elements, such as crafting. Long and/or frequent loading times, unlikable passive-aggressive main character who comments on everything, extremely slow dialogues riddled with interjections, repetitive scenery. Dilemma of which of the two morally ambiguous to join for profits is negated by a third camp which appears later on and has the benefits of both, until you have to leave it for another camp, further prolonging an already obnoxiously long game.
Very negative review.

Also, I will probably rename this thread to also include "Dev Diaries" as well.

A short summary of the new episode:

Close to the Sun is a horror action-adventure game where you can't fight off enemies ala Outlast, or "advanced level walking simulator, where you get messily killed if you don't walk in precisely the correct manner at times". The plot of the game is almost entirely ripped off Bioshock, but with nary a subtlety. The switch between "looking around" mode and "run away from the monsters" mode is too short and might cause the player to be killed way too quickly without a way to react. Contextual jump prompts make it very inconvenient to move around, as you have to aim at the part you want to jump at, which might be another cause of death. Time travel is a part of the plot, and there is an implication that you're dealing with things your future self has instigated, but nothing ever happens of it. A few slight jabs at Epic Games Store.
Very negative review.

Well, it seems Yahtzee took some pointers from Jimbos lil' "steam has no quality control and Epic can challenge it's monopoly and they have quality control for indie games" BS train, combined with pretty much repeating the material for said game that I've heard said by another reviewer.
Yahtzee barely even talked about EGS. Here's the entire part from the review where he talks about it, which happens to be the very beginning of the review:
Somehow, I expect more from something that calls itself the "Epic Store"; I picture a place with 10-foot-high golden doors, where all the staff dress in togas, that sells nothing but copies of the Odyssey tattooed onto the side of white stallions, and when you swipe your credit card, it makes a lightsaber noise. At least something more than "dark grey boxes and no user reviews"! But whether you think the Epic Store is an inferior pretender trying to buy its way into the winners' table by holding sought-after games hostage, or a viable means to break Steam's digital distribution monopoly that at least has a slightly higher level of quality control than a starving goat in the alleyway behind a KFC, either way, it's something we're going to have to live with.

For me, I'm happy for any source of indie games that actually curates them a bit; the indie games sphere can be a wonderful thing, but my God, it produces shit like an, uh... extremely well-fed goat in the alleyway behind a KFC.
Now point me to the exact part where he says that Epic can challenge Steam's monopoly. The only part where he mentions it is the one where he talks about other people's very split opinions on the topic, not his own. As much as we hate it, EGS hand-picking games at the very least implies QC, whereas Steam barely has any. For every single Edmund McMillen there are hundreds of Digital Homicides who shit out unremarkable copycats or asset flips. These are both facts. It doesn't mean that Yahtzee hates Steam because it doesn't have QC. In fact, you can even see his opinion on it in the very first 2 sentences of the review, if you open your eyes.

You shat up a thread on how CDPR is the worst gamedev studio ever conceived and everyone who likes their games is stupid. A thread wasn't even tangentially related to CDPR. When people directed you to the thread where you should share your unpopular opinion, you probably didn't even touch it.

Here's an idea for you - how about you don't visit threads on topics you have an opinion so negative about it makes you go full-on tard because of all the anger? How about next time you decide, for some reason, to give your invaluable opinion on something you're clearly angry about, you turn off your PC and go outside? You aren't impressing anyone being a snobby contrarian. At the very least phrase it in a way that doesn't make you look like a massive cunt.
