"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

Today I've been reminded that Zero Punctuation still endures. Regardless, I am unable to muster any fucks.

I rather liked Shamus' writing but I always got the strong sense that he and his family were very dysfunctional. It doesn't sound like he had much of a relationship with either his wife or children even when they were living under the same roof, and at one point he talked about how his daughter (who I think is the one who trooned out) hadn't been home to visit in many years.

A desperate attempt to diversify and not depend on a single golden goose. It is a valid strategy, just one that is failing miserably.

I had kind of forgot about him easilly 10 years ago, so I certainly was not very much aware of his personal life. I did like his stuff and from the sound of it he didn't become a faggot only screaming current yearisms. Pretty sad way to go still and I can't imagine his daughter ignoring him and trooning out didn't affect him.

Hell, if his daughter was estranged from him,that the vile cunt took the site to skinwalk as the father is extra disgusting.

Far as I can remember he never went into specifics as to how/why they became estranged. It sounds a bit like he just sort of left his wife to do the childrearing while he worked and did his video game stuff.

The one thing that really gave me pause is that he talked about how he couldn't play Soulslikes because frustration made him fly into rages that scared his family.

From reading the daughter's posts she seems to trying to come to terms with his death and do right by his memory by continuing the site. She isn't especially big on crowing about being a genderspecial. She seems to have inherited both his issues (she's definitely anxious and agoraphobic) and his talents (she's a solid enough writer).

I don't really care about his use of cunt, I think it varies in severity depending on context, In the UK and American territories it's generally considered to be extremely vulgar but apparently it has a far more casual usage depending on context amongst friends etc i wont go too far into this since its somewhat boring, either way In Australia it's considered to far less taboo and I think considering Yahtzee's propensity for scathing criticism this should be the least of anyones concerns.

Yahtzee's whining about JKR and defending is very disappointing considering his history of being always going against the grain and being staunchly radical in game opinions, especially how it goes against his entire personality of going gainst the crowd and giving into childish hangups. However I don't this completely dampens his credibility yet. In contrast to so many other game critics the guy still has a pretty impressive track record, this is probably the first genuinely 'bad' video he's done in over 15 years of his profession, compared to people like Jim sterling and even AVGN who the former is a batshit Troon and the later is a balding has-been who hasn’t been relevant and funny in close to a decade now Ben is leagues ahead.

I really don’t think he’s going to be a lolcow anytime soon for simply falling out of popularity and and finally going woke for one terrible video. he’s still a better watch than 90% of other game critics out there.

We said the same about AVGN and in about two years his thread ballooned to 200 pages holy shit it's 300 and he got promoted to lolcow

One last comment on the Hogwarts Legacy stuff since it's becoming old news: They are definetly deleting YouTube comments as well. I gotta say, seems a bit disingenuous to call yourself the "right side of history" when you go full media blackout when faced with differing opinions on men wearing dresses.

But James Isn't a lolcow, he has a whole crew of lolcows on his team but the guy himself is very boring and milquetoast as a content creator, all that he’s done is get progressively worse in making videos and made one shitty movie but becoming less funny doesn’t make you a lolcow, I don’t even know why he has the careercow tag he doesn’t need it. Ben does even less and has had a far more consistent higher level of quality than AVGN and doesn’t actively embarrass himself on stream so I don’t think he’s going to be a lolcow anytime soon.

To be fair I haven’t, I didn’t know about that imao. Even so current day James is just more of a tired old boomer with some stupid ways of handling business. But I still do t think he’s lolcow worthy. Maybe in a minor sense but he’s leaps and bounds away from DSP or boogie. The man does have a family and a brown on his shoulders.

Part of being a lolcow is not learning from your mistakes and continuing to be a trainwreck. No one talks about SegaSammyClassicFan anymore because he learned to quit being a sperg and screaming at the camera about stupid shit and got his life more or less together.

I have mixed feeling on James, but continuing to put out content and not getting wrapped up in identity politics is admirable as far as "content creators" go.

I've been watching a lot of Yahtzee's Extra Punctuation videos (this new rebranded version he does every two weeks in video form instead of in blog form like he used to) and I like them a lot. They seem like the kind of videos Jim Sterling should be making instead of just using it as a way to whine about capitalism bad and transphobic gamers. Specifically, I like the video he did on the "everything" games and that not only are they fundamentally impossible but even if it was it would still suffer from a lack of focus. I like that he criticises the consumers who keep enabling this trend in a way that doesn't come across as trying to villainize consumers as the root of the problem. It's more like a way to make people who think they know better but still think "well I still like the sound of that" about games like Star Citizen realise that at some point you need to restrain your ambition for the sake of making something focused that can be released.

The few times I watched Extra Punctuation, all I could think was, "Yeah, no shit. Now call someone a retard or spacker like you used to. Oh wait, Nick won't let you say those words anymore. Pity."

As far as Yahtzee's side projects go, I miss Judging by the Cover. It wasn't as funny or memorable as ZP, but it was far more interesting than any of the side projects Yahtzee has done since.
