"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

The front page already is dominated by AAAs and gay indies; here's a screenshot of the front page of the App Store I took when I started typing up this post a couple of days ago:

Mobile games were, and have always been shit, but it really does feel like something more could be done with the platform. Modern phones are little pocket-sized touchscreen machines with gaming potential on par with maybe like, the Xbox 360, yet nothing substantial in gaming ever happens on mobile. I guess I always just overestimated the power of their touchscreens. Even after over a decade of use, they never came close to being even manageable replacements for a proper controller, let alone a keyboard, and the smattering of mobile games I actually play are ones that I play with my stylus, because our big goofy fingers still obfuscate way too much of the screen, even on big phones.

I never thought it'd be the future of games either, and I always found those "lmao portable games are DEAD" articles to be shortsighted as hell, but I saw potential in all of these new features that just never got realized. Last year, I wrote a post outlining an idea I had for a dungeon crawler that used Pokemon Go-esque real life landmarks that you'd travel to and collect dungeons to explore:

There could be a hell of a lot more done with this style of game, if they gave any actual reason for players to go and visit new places. Like, one game I've imagined is a dungeon crawler where you level up by scanning stops around your town. The levels would be permanently kept, with stops turning into shops, mini-dungeons, and little villages where you can get quests on repeat visits, but you'd be heavily encouraged to go find new stops to boost your level. These would be background to a main campaign which you could play at home, where the actual dungeon crawling would earn you in-game GP you could use to buy better equipment. And of course, you could drop off some items as treasures for others to find, alongside Dark Souls-style shitposts for others to laugh at. It's a game that would encourage exploration and exercise, forcing its players to touch grass to make progress, and appreciate the world around them.

can't really compare a retail space like walmart to a digital storefront. their quality control is a necessary evil since they simply can't stock everything.

on top of that, how you would define quality in the first place? what if it's an outright clone of an existing game but does everything better except graphics? at some point the easiest and most rational thought is just put all on the store and let the customer figure it out, but it turns out the customer is dumb as a brick (just look at the average bait steam thread, and steam gives you a fuckhuge amount of tools to find the good shit, on top of outside sources).

which leads me to the games itself - most people are lazy as well. pokemon go works because it's MUH POKEMON!11!! and a lot of people play it because they see others play it. that's not saying another game could be a hit, but probability is low (there's a reason shovelware is popular, or just at the other big earners: fortnite and gta). quality was never a guarantee for commercial success, and companies figured out shitting out a lot of cheap shit and see what sticks is cheaper and easier than taking big risks that might never take off.

that's just how it is, and unless the phone landscape and/or customer preference changes in the future probably here to stay for a while.

I've never seen a Yahtzee video and decided to give the mobile gaming one a try. Less than a minute in:
"exactly the same thing that caused the ’80s video game crash. Fuck the one percent. There, that’s the requisite capitalism bashing out of the way-"
I instantly lost all interest and clicked off the video. Anyway, isn't this the faggot who started the shitty PC master race meme anyways?

Unfortunately Yahtzee is showing the same signs as Schreier did in that he is becoming more insufferable thanks to Extra Punctuation. All we need is him to start internet slapfights and we got a real lolcow.

Still he isn't wrong if the mobile gaming scene is this bleak, hell the coomer shit on mobile is slowly killing ecchi anime since why put in effort for good lewd when you can make some big Booba girl and have her become a FOTM?

Also Yahtzee regurgitates the typical douchebags vs Turds in video game factions as a New Vegas Cult whistle with the odd weeb gamer talking about how morally complex their games are if Yahtzee would just play them

Weeb games are not morally complex they still fall into the same rut he's talking about. Shin Megami Tensei choices are still guilty of the same shit New Vegas does.

The type of conflict they're ideally referring to isn't order vs chaos or good vs evil, but good vs good. Good vs Good tend to be conflicts that have nuance and will boil down to your own personal preferences as a player.

You mean the same meme that he hates because he once saw a snobbish comment/review on Steam? (no really, he bitched about that in one of his videos, I forget which one though)

I’m excited for Yahtzee to sing the praises of Elden Ring as I have sunk 100 hours into the game & it will gratify me

The PC Master Race thing was an obvious crack at gaming warriors. Is it really a surprise it annoyed him when those same idiots swanned around the phrase in sincerity?
Shhhhh, you'll upset them.
Which reminds me, I wonder where that "blue cat" fellow went. Maybe he finally stopped caring so much.

Obviously he likes it, the crafting is useless and it clogs the rewards and he didn't have the time to get past Rennala so he didn't even make it to mid game

Depends how thorough he was, tbh. "Mid game" is a bit vague given the sheer size and open ended nature of the game - I've known people to spend about fourty hours just poking around Limgrave and Caelid.

it also depends on if they suck or not because I know people who have around 130 hours in and they've spent most of that time fucking up and are not even close to the end. I think because it may be their first souls game that they're interested in so there's a learning curve for new people.

That seems to happen a lot more often these days.
The guy handles two weekly video series (Zero and Extra Punctuation - though he doesn't do the production for Extra Punctuation, just the writing AFAIK) and is a part of a few other series on the channel as well, so I wouldn't be surprised that he can't spend as much time on actually playing the game.

I just watched Yahtzee's review of Judgement.

He is the last person in the world that can say whether or not someone dresses lamely. His take on Yagami's design is hilarious considering he is an old nerd.

Let's not forget, this is the guy who used to wear a fedora all the time and only stopped not because of neckbearded-m'lady-internet atheist assholes, but 'cause people would recognize him faster.

I think his greatest issue is the same as any "professional" critic of treating their personal tastes and opinions as objective fact
