Many Saints of Newark - A movie with too many stories it wants to tell with not enough time

Also did Ray Liotta play two people in the film?

Yes. He plays Dicky's father as well as his uncle. Although I got the feeling the uncle was supposed to be in Dicky's head even though Christopher mentions him in the opening narration.

In fact, I feel like Christophers narration was something added by HBO/New Line much in the same way as Deckard's in Blade Runner. It just feels so....out of place.

They have been open about wanting to do follow up movies to this, my guess is that is why many things don't get wrapped up, with that said the movie could have done with an extra 30 minutes o better flesh out a number of things within the movie even if they weren't going to be wrapped up within it. But if they do a follow-up, David Chase said he wanted Terence Winter to be involved.

But what people are saying about it being a mess is true, and your enjoyment is really based on being a fan of the show because you can fill in most of the gaps with that knowledge. While I gave this a 7/10, if I had never seen the show could easily been a 5/`0 or lower.

Now if the movie could have been better as a series, I don't know, while it could have fleshed things out more than needed to be, not sure if this story needed 6 or 8+ episodes to tell. Guess they could have done extra storylines to flesh out some secondary characters like Johnny Soprano.

With that news, he clearly has something planned with the Sopranos.

That wasn't added by HBO. They had no ideas how to start the movie, so they tried a number of things, even shot some stuff, Edie Falco, back as Carmela Soprano. In the end, they picked the Christopher narration one for whatever reason.

The reason I say it needed to be a series is because nothing flows well and it feels like you need to make a lot of inferences as a Sopranos fan. The time skip is a major problem as well. It probably could have worked as well as two separate movies to be fair.

We have almost nothing set up about Dickie and his father. It's all very very rushed and thrown at you in the car. Was this resentment over his father beating his mother simmering his whole life? Was it just an excuse because he wanted his wife? Did they never get along? Why were they living together? Was his anger and sorrow at the funeral genuine or all an act? I have no idea because I know absolutely nothing about their relationship. Hell I don't hardly know anything about Hollywood Dick in general? If he is so Hollywood, why is he running garages/car parts store? If he has so Hollywood why is he now living in a regular neighborhood in Newark with his son?

Were the riots really necessary? It's a lot of build up for Harold, who in the end is just kind of an antagonist that I felt no connection too. Harold fucking what's her name feels rushed when they just kind of looked at each other a few times and her and Dicky seem to just have a single fight. The relationship with Dickie feels like there is supposed to be kind of a friendship there, but also kind of not? It's a lot of buildup for an antagonist that works in a series but not in a film at all.

And then you have Tony, who appears to be the lynchpin of the movie. And yet, he has absolutely nothing to do with most of the plotlines in this film, and his entire relationship to Dickie is told to us and we are not really shown it. Livia says he only listens to Dickie, and he just kind of goes to him for stuff in the second half. That's it. I didn't feel this deep deep connection between them, especially not enough to have his death be the "big moment" that births *the* Tony Soprano.

It honestly feels like if it wasn't a season of television, this whole movie could have been a trilogy of movies leading to Tony becoming Tony if that was the intention. As it is, it's a rushed mess that's seems like it's going to lead to just a young Tony Soprano film or series, which itself is going to feel rushed. Unlike most of the casuals, I actually wanted a Dickie Moltisanti story and it feels like his entire character was wasted just so we could get straight to Tony again.

I was ok with the Chris narration. It was a little stupid, but then again he once killed a dog by sitting on it, and there was that whole screenwriter story arc, so stupid and Chris have long gone together. And I was even OK with the last line, since it reinforces the fact that Chris is salty as fuck; he probably would ruin the mood at a pivotal moment, if he was in charge of narrating a Sopranos prequel.

I was OK with it. I didn't think the Chris narration was particularly good, but it didn't quite make my list of top disappointments.

My hope now is that they do a followup series where Chris comes back as cleaver-wielding zombie. Make it happen in the prequel timeline, too, just to be extra retarded.

Please tell me the last line of the movie is something along the lines of Tony saying one day he's going to be the boss, while looking at the sun, and someone tells him 'Tone... don't stop believin'" and it cuts to black.

Nope. Even dumber.

Is Christopher in hell saying "that's my uncle Tony, the man I went to he'll for.

Holy shit that's bad.

I would have legit given that movie a 10/10 if 1h59 minutes of it was a young Bobby eating Baked Ziti as long as that last line had been 'Don't stop believing' and then cut to black, now that I think about it.
Actually, that's technically NOT the last line. The last line is
"Mornin'!"
, said by the black gangster, to a random old white dude who's TotAlLy frEaked ouT from seeing a black guy, maaan!
I wish Chris had the last line. At least then, the last line of what may potentially be the final installment of Sopranos, would go to a character with more than five minutes of total screentime.

It's a messy film. It would have made a better series.
Ahh shit that means Bill Simmons was right. A new Sopranos, even as a limited series with 10-12 episodes would've been ideal. I'll still give it a shot because it sounds like it's not awful and I've rewatched Pine Barrens in anticipation.

The worst part? HBO is gonna let Chase make more Sopranos series's now

That's... that's probably a bad idea.

You already rewatched Pine Barrens, so no sense dwelling on it now. But you'll probably like this movie more if you go in with as little anticipation, and as few memories as possible of the Sopranos.

Find the worst episode, and go rewatch that before you put the movie on. Probably your best option right now.
