A court has rejected a 60-year-old man's attempt to invoke the ancient right to trial by combat, rather than pay a £25 fine for a minor motoring offence.

Leon Humphreys remained adamant yesterday that his right to fight a champion nominated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) was still valid under European human rights legislation. He said it would have been a "reasonable" way to settle the matter.
Magistrates sitting at Bury St Edmunds on Friday had disagreed and instead of accepting his offer to take on a clerk from Swansea with "samurai swords, Ghurka knives or heavy hammers", fined him £200 with £100 costs. Humphreys, an unemployed mechanic, was taken to court after refusing to pay the original £25 fixed penalty for failing to notify the DVLA that his Suzuki motorcycle was off the road.

After entering a not guilty plea, he threw down his unconventional challenge. Humphreys, from Bury St Edmunds, said: "I was willing to fight a champion put up by the DVLA, but it would have been a fight to the death."

It's that different regions and states in Germany have different dialects. North tends to speak more standard German. East is the "poor region" (because of WW2 Germany was split in half, from North to South 50:50, one half to Russia I think and the other to idk, I forgot). The West is the rich and educated region. And South, especially Bavaria, is a region everyone makes fun. It was also Bavaria that was full on the Hitler wave and supported that fag back then.
East has a lot of slavs living there. But the more South or East you go, the heavier the dialect. It's that words don't get pronounced as they should. The t gets often pronounced as d. "-er" ending sound like "a". Words that have "ir" in it like "Wirtschaft" which means economy is pronounced as "wiadschaft" or "weadschaft" or "wiadschouft", it depends on the region in Bavaria. For foreigners or untrained ears it's hard to understand.

It always perplexed me because I didn't have many issues talking to people in Hamburg, or even Berlin, but München was a whole different story.
I feel a bit better knowing that the difficulties I had weren't entirely my fault.

Where I live, the dialect can be so thick and vary so much from town to town, you have people from small neighboring towns that can't understand one another. I shit you not. I could barely understand my own grandparents at times.

When you're ever feeling down about learning German but being unable to understand someone speaking dialect, comfort yourself with the knowledge that German native speakers have the exact same difficulties.

Northern Germany is mostly accent-free, but we got the Low German language here, which is a whole different can of worms.
