Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

Damn, that sucks. Too bad there aren't any alternative POSIX operating systems out there concerned users could switch to, much less other Linux distros.

Snark aside, is there something particularly interesting about Arch that makes it worth fighting for?
Yeah homies shoulda just switched to Hannah Montana Linux instead, the absolute fools.
But seriously that mostly depends on the persons use case, what package manager they like more than the other, etc.
It's just interesting to note, since it's one of the bigger distros having a spastic moment. Imagine this shit happening to Debian (which I'm sure probably has at some point). Shit's gettin' quirky.

I mean, there kind of are, but they're OSes that would probably need a lot more adoption to get your average user to care about. Try checking out HAIKU and OpenIndiana if you're curious.
I was thinking more about the BSDs specifically.

Does Haiku follow POSIX? I thought it was off doing its own GUI-centric thing. I don't see any mention of it on the Wikipedia page.

This isn't anything notorious but I saw this in another site and I found it funny:

I could've swore Lemmy was already talked about but apparently I'm misremembering, I couldn't find anything searching this thread. The two main devs are dessalines and Nutomic, both of whom have Fidel Castro PFPs becaues of course they do. Here are some of dessalines' work:

The last one if you're wondering is a petition to Github to end their contract to provide Enterprise Server to the United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement because of muh notorious crimes and human rights violations or whatever. My favorite is the Reddit banbot, the jokes just write themselves.

Something that always stood out to me about politically inclined FOSS projects (including most of those already mentioned in this thread) is how the quality starts going into the dumps once the political vision of its maintainers and contributors start being the main focus and I think this is reflected on the commit history and thus immediately noticeable once you read the commit messages. I'm going to compare three different projects to try to paint a perspective of what I'm talking about. This is part of Lemmy's commit history:
1637256137532.png

Notice how little activity there is (compared to the other two) and how they focus mostly on getting it to work with other software and protocols (Pleroma and ActivityPub) and fixing trivial errors. Now let's look at Symfony PHP, which has a small amount of similarity to Lemmy when it comes to objectives:
1637256324445.png

Right away it's noticeable how most commits focus on getting their APIs to inter-operate better and without errors, which I think is a lot harder than fixing user-facing bugs like Lemmy's. Now let's compare these two to a completely different project that has absolutely zero political inclination due to its technical nature, Mesa:
1637256469630.png

It's noticeable right away how these commits reflect a lower level of programming abstraction and are more technical in nature. However, it's clear to me that a somewhat similar technical nature and commitment is still present when we take a look at Symfony, but not Lemmy. I get the impression that the people behind Symfony are actual humans with brains and not NPCs only capable of responding and screeching to anything that may vaguely resemble a threat to their dumb communist utopia.

Rust Moderation team (3 people) resign because their unlimited powers to ruin people don't cover the core team, and someone did something. Anyone know what's going on?

- https://www.reddit.com/r/rust/comments/qzme1z/moderation_team_resignation/ (https://archive.ph/7okI2)
- https://github.com/rust-lang/team/pull/671 (https://archive.ph/aO2Pt)
It's more complicated than that. People are speculating it has something to do with "Ashley" Williams joining the core team.

These quotes around "Ashley" make me think there's something that screencap is also not telling me. Let me guess: was "Ashley" not born a woman?

Better up-to-date-ness and less bureaucracy than Debian, less special snowflakey "you don't own your own pc" shit than Ubuntu, not run by utter incompetents like Mint, not run by Poettering and corporate interests like everything based on RHEL (so Cent, Fedora, etc.).

The AUR (arch user repository) has almost anything you could ever want in it.

The Arch wiki is the best collection of Linux documentation anywhere on the internet.

IMO it's the ideal distro for desktop usage for people who aren't complete newbies. I finally gave it a try and it stays out of my damn way like most other distros don't.

Ashley fucking Williams strikes again. The same Ashley from the Node.js Rod Vagg fiasco (see the beginning of this thread). I do not understand the general support she receives from the many other losers in industry given the ashes she leaves in her wake... Hey I guess the name is appropriate.

Nah, she's biological, she's just let herself go. Ashley, when you read this, you are turning into Lena Dunham and its funny to watch.

Here is a link to that hacker news comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28633113

The list by @Czechem Republic is solid, but the thing that made me a fan was the minimalistic base install and that it has decent cross platform support.

Base install is something like maybe 100mb to start, from there it can become just about anything. I've got an old pogoplug w/ a 2gb SD card running arch as a printer server. I've got a pair of 3rd gen Intel i5 signage computers w/ Arch installed running my home docker cluster.

One you get the hang of it, it is easy to spin stuff up with Arch. Arch getting pozzed would be quite the tragedy, as several other distros are already terrible in other ways mentioned above.

This is the only point I would contest considering Arch's reliance on systemd as their init and service manager, with very little effort being made from what I could tell by Arch themselves to provide support for any other inits. Some packages in Arch's main repos even go as far as to list systemd as a dependency anyways, which goes strongly against the point of using an alternative init in the first place.

That being said, it's still ubiquitous and well-loved enough that there are many derivative distros based on Arch that even aim to solve the init problem like Artix and Obarun. Overall it's still a pretty solid base, and one that a lot of people out there are willing to put the work into to support other approaches that the lead maintainers may not want to.

As far as I know she is one of the few actual women in tech, but she is a classic case of borderline personality disorder. She has the mindset that inserting extremist left-wing politics into FOSS is appropriate and "inclusive" even though it drives other marginalized people out of the scene (I'm one of them, and it is literally because of Ashley). She is infamous for being a walking Antifa billboard. Like, I don't care if she does that on her free time, but it's just gross for her to push her political views, for her to get lots of support (from a vocal but small supporter base) for being political, and for her to also drive out people who have different politics (even people who aren't left-wing enough for her). Ashley, Laurie Seldo, Isaac Schlueter, and their hangers-on just made the JavaScript and Node communities toxic to be too close too. I wish these people would either fuck off or else learn to tolerate people who have different points of view.

editˆ: I see Ashley now has "she/they" pronouns in her bio. Because of fucking course she does.

I was looking into the XenForo license ordeal and found some Linux troon on Twitter who keeps tabs on KF, bitches at Cloudflare, hates archive.org, etc. He has been talked about a few times on the farms due to being a Pleroma dev and for his comments on Byuu's "death" at the hands of evil kiwis. Today I bring you a little more, but first my favorite tweet of his:

He is William Pitcock from around Tulsa, Oklahoma. NIgga is called Willy PitCock lmao.
Aliases: kaniini, nenolod, Ariadne Conill, ariadneconill

totally age appropriate for any adult woman to take pictures with stuffed animals, not a sad attempt to hide his massive chin and distract from his shaggy eyebrows and kilometric forehead

nightmarish

Few pics from his fb (archived):

take ahold of his Chris Chan phenotype lol. Imagine the smell

He was somehow involved in Freenode and gaineed some enemy from there. Someone circa 2018 registered williampitcock.com (archived) to try to mek him look like a white supremacist pedo lol, including a section titled "trannies diluting the pro-pedo cause", mind you this was before he publicly trooned out. He does use the word "MAP" and wants children on the fediverse though mhmmm (archived):
1639335482167.png

and if you were wondering, yes, he just so happens to be a lesbian (many such cases!)
1639336468409.png

and he's involved with Reddit-famous tranny Laurelai (kf thread) and some other grotesque crossdressing freak with a thread: NekoArc (kf thread). Also another mentally ill troon furry with multiple personalities ,that goes by hte names ElizaFox or Elizabeth Myers, is William's ex boyfriend.

here he is looking for dirt on 1776 Solutions LLC, lol at Null not even having an email to report abuse, based. http://archive.md/ezTTA
