I think the correct framing is "our country is built on the Enlightenment values of asserting the inherent liberty and dignity of all mankind." Should the Europeans have been less sweeping in their statements about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, if they were going to fail at delivering it to everyone at once? Or were they staking a claim that they knew would keep people fighting for freedom for centuries, ideals that were going to last much longer than any of them?
It's hard to demand the Enlightenment and even Christian ideals while simultaneously arguing that both were a mistake. I mean, they try, but they want to pretend they got an empty box instead of an incredible gift with some wear and tear on the wrapping.
