I've looked into this pretty extensively. The mainstream of the transgender community today is aligned behind their parents who are aligned behind the doctors. There is no evidence from long term clinical studies to support this concern, though there is plenty of evidence of it happening on toxic web sites like this one , twitter and reddit. You're talking about a fringe element of people self-medicating against the advice of global advocates and local organizers.

Yes, there are highly unethical doctors fast tracking women into hormones and surgery, but again, that is on the fringe. When proper standards of care are followed, the person is screened for at least a few months before hormones are prescribed and they are living in the mode of their preferred gender for over a year before they can access surgery.
