Just watched the first episode of Stone Ocean dubbed. I didn't think it was possible to experience physical pain from cringe but I literally found myself almost walking out of the room during the episode.

It felt like a bad 90s ova. Did we not make any progress with voicework in 30 years?

I'm sticking to subs fam.

Yeah though unlike Attack on Titan at least the end didn’t ruin the entire series.
The joys of having mostly self contained parts. Still wondering what Part 9 will be like.

It feels like Kira Buckland was the only one really giving it her all; not surprising since she’s a fan and has been angling for the role of Jolyne forever.

They did pretty good with the last three dubs imo so I wonder what happened here.

All that is certain about Part 9 is that it will likely be the final part as I really don't think Araki will do a Part 10 or anything. We'll probably know about it in a few months

I dunno, JoJo dubbed isn't my first choice for certain but I think hammy and over-the-top voicework suits it the best. The dub sounded alright to me. What were your complaints more specifically?

Just the overall ham of it all and the bad delivery to be honest. I guess you can argue it fits with JoJo and the dialogue is cheese to begin with but bad is still bad. It felt like a Saturday morning cartoon and I guess I expected more? To be honest I'm not sure what the standard should be, I don't watch that much anime anymore and what I do watch I watch subbed. The last dub I saw was probably the original Fullmetal Alchemist so maybe this is the norm?

Dubs are honestly hit or miss nowadays. Jojo is a clear example. I decided to watch the Part 6 dub and it's mediocre. But Jojo dubbed is weird since Part 1 is decent, Part 2's is god awful, Parts 3 and 4 were good, Part 5 was decent but had a lot of cringeworthy moments like Diavolo and random Italian, Part 6 seems to have some of the same issues as Part 5's dub where some performances are decent but Pucci is pretty miscast. Like I used to think it was okay based on a small clip but rewatching it, Yongyea was a poor pick.

Can't watch part 1's dub. Everyone sounds great except for Jonathan, because JYB cannot do a natural British accent and it sounds horrible. Part 2 Joseph's VA is perfect, but Caesar sounds like shit. Part 4 was okay but they casted a guy with a borderline lisp to play Okuyasu and that didn't work for me because I already had it set in my head that the best English VA for him would be Chris Sabat just doing his Kuwabara voice, considering Okuyasu is just Kuwabara with less depth.

Part 3's dub is the sweet spot though. Basically perfectly casted all around.

Are you sure it isn't just that anime has stilted, unnatural dialogue, and the disconnect of watching it in Japanese while reading subtitles allows you to immerse yourself in that better than in a dub where you're forced to confront the content more directly?

That's a good point, that is probably a big part of. I'm actually struggling to think of one that does sound good in English (though admittedly don't watch many dubs so I can't think of many period). This might be nostalgia but Cowboy Bebop was really good? It's been years though so I might not be remembering too well.

Jeez I hope part 8 isn't the last, the last third of that part genuinely made it my least favorite part. I am hoping he still has that creative magic in him left.

Part 2 Joseph's VA is perfect, but Caesar sounds like shit.
This is the first time I heard of this, I always thought the Part 2 dub for Joesph was unlistenable, I keep thinking he was an over confident numbah one. Although if there is god like dub voice actor in JoJo, it's ironically the dub actor for Diavolo, which I think is better than the sub by a large magnitude just because the added intimidation he gave to the villain. Sub Diavolo's voice was kinda forgettable, but dub downright sounded like the devil.

I mean Part 9 was already announced bruh

I think the issue with Part 2 Joseph is due to how the voice director told him to put on a british accent, since that VA does well in other roles. But he's much more listenable compared to Caesar who had the most grating voice. Also I disagree on Diavolo's voice since he felt more intimidating in the sub whereas in the dub he really needs a cough drop.

A thing I didn't understand is the talk about part 5 and the concept of fate. Giorno beating Diavollo was somehow averting his pre-destined fate to lose? Wouldn't Diavollo's stand be the one that averts fate by literally erasing events?

It’s not erasing events really. Diavolo just skips time where people forget they have done things. The only thing that changes fate is Diavolo’s position since his actions still happen but he can change where he is.

The fate thing in part 5 gets a little more complicated because of the way King Crimson + Epitaph works. So Fate is a thing that is real and it applies to everyone, everything that is bound to happen will happen, so on and so forth. Epitaph has the hability to look 5 seconds into the future, so he can see what is 100% going to happen next. This is where KC comes in.

When he activates KC, Diavolo is no longer bound by Fate and can do whatever he wishes while everyone else is still bound to their fates. This is the moment he uses to move around and turn dudes into donuts.

I love that King Crimson is so complicated you need flowchart to explain its power. The concept of fate in part 5 kinda feels tacked on with the ending reveal that Bucciarati doomed himself and the others when he tried to fight against it.

They were already doomed to begin with. Rolling Stones' ability is that it goes after people that are fated to die soon and it tries to give them a peaceful death. This is why it went after Buciaratti but left Mista and Fugo alone.

It helps to think of King Crimson as The World but with weirder extra conditions or additional steps.

King Crimson moves times forward X seconds and no one notices until the effect is over. In practice its usage comes close to The World but DIavolo doesn't get to sucker-punch people during it. Whatever motion was happening when King Crimson was first activated still technically happened, but because the events that lead up to that happening get deleted the result happens in weird ways. Like the bullet example, Diavolo is shot but "the moment the bullets hit Diavolo" is deleted therefore the bullets end up where they should be, but Diavolo isn't harmed. This is probably why he can't sucker-punch people during Diavolo Time. This part does get fucky with Narancia's death, but if you assume he was thrown there off-panel and only got impaled once starts flowing like normal it sort of makes sense.

Narancia's death could be explained as something Diavolo would've done but the skipped time allows him to hide while it is still fated to happen so in the erased time, Narancia just flies there.

Honestly King Crimson is one of those stands that seems super complicated at first but the more you discuss or learn, it gets easier to understand.

Yeah, most of the much-memed confusion comes from a poorly translated scanlation, which was the only one available for quite some time.
